Film student here, "the Jaws shot" is KNOWN as "the Jaws shot" but it is called THE DOLLY ZOOM. Made famous by the movie but also famous in Hitchcock's Vertigo. Film studies call it by what it actually is and not by the movie it was famous for.
If JAWS did not exist, JAWS 2 would be considered the best shark movie of all time.

Dear Film Student, a 30 year old Jewish boy took a relatively unknown camera trick and turned it into one of the most terrifying moments in cinematic history. There’s a lot I DONT like about Spielberg’s work but that moment, as brilliant as Hitchcock was, is ALL Spielberg’s.
The scene with the son is my favorite, too. I think it plays two ways. As a dad myself, this scene shows his vulnerability: he is a father and his son adores him, no matter what the town people think.
Also, it shows what is at stake: the future. His son mimicking him shows him learning how to be a man himself, and Brody knows it intuitively, and it adds to the pressure he’s experiencing.
I don’t think Brody’s scene of him chumming needs CGI at all, I think the shark looks great in that scene when it comes to the surface. Great podcast guys! 👍🏼

Bill makes a good point about the aspect ratio. Jaws was one of the first VHS tapes to have the black bars on top and bottom to preserve the widescreen.
Roy Scheider is one of the most criminally Oscar-ignored actors EVER.

Greatest third act of all time
All 3 of the leads (Scheider, Shaw & Dreyfuss) faced the Great White head on in a matter of 10 min. Perhaps the greatest conclusion to a film in the history of cinema!
The famous dolly zoom shot on Brody was taken from Hitchcock’s Vertigo. Spielberg used it again in E.T.
Bad plot explanation of Sorcerer (1977). The fragile cargo the trucks carry is nitroglycerine. Though in hiding due to their criminal pasts, the characters are not "being chased by dirty cops" while making the perilous journey. First of all, no one is chasing them. Secondly, Scheider's character is on the run from the mafia, not "dirty cops."
Remember the Jaws 'Buckeroo' game? The plastic shark had its jaws fixed with a rubber band, so they'd snap shut. 🦈
I was about 6 (1977) when I first saw Jaws...this movie still terrifies me, and I rarely will go swimming in the ocean.
The year before Jaws, the Best Director nominees were Coppola (winner for The Godfather, Part II), Polanski (Chinatown), Truffaut (Day for Night), Fosse (Lenny), and John Cassavetes (A Woman Under the Influence).
8:35 the reason movies probably weren’t big in the summers before jaws, is that air conditioning was almost unheard of. I doubt people wanted to be inside hot dark dirty theaters in most parts of the country during peak summer months during 50s and 60s
The part about going outside as a kid and being gooooooonnnnneeeee is so spot on !!! From 10-11am till maybe dinner, maybe !!! Then it was the street lights. I was outside for years...
I heard a lot of stories about Robert Shaw over the years. Everyone hated him! I didn't know, he dared Richard Dreyfuss to climb the mass and jump off! Crazy!

To me the most rewatchable scene is the Indianapolis speech. Not only the best scene in this movie but one of the best scenes in any movie ever. Shaw just pulls you into the story so you feel like you're in that water trying to scare the sharks away!
It is the most watchable, my favourite and head to toe, pound for pound what a film should be

You suggest it's 'too white', but I lived in a seaside town during the mid seventies and there was exactly one black guy in the whole town then. It was like that through to the mid 80s. Artificially dropping in minorities to a different time and place would be dishonest film making.
I had always heard about a possible prequel to Jaws titled "Jaw" that supposedly Spielberg was going to produce back in the 2000s when the wave of other shark movies was growing but with so many delays and the sad death of Peter Benchley in 2006 to write the script i think it will never happen. 20 years later I still would of love to see it. The idea of that same 26 foot great white from Jaws hunting people down before it got to Amity Island sounded like it could of actually been entertaining.
No, this prequel about Quint and the Indianapolis sinking was what he proposed to make immediately after Jaws came out, but the studio wanted an actual sequel and while Spielberg did think about making the second film for a time, he decided to make Close Encounters instead and then dropped the Indianapolis prequel entirely. He’s never made an effort to make a Jaws prequel since not continuing with the franchise after the first film.

Here's why Jaws is not perfect. After encountering Ben Gardner's disembodied head, Brody and Hooper meet with the Mayor but nobody mentions the head. The tooth is mentioned but not the head. Seems like a dead guy's head floating around a boat would at least be worth a mention.

In Columbus, Ohio Zoombezi Bay has a large wave pool and they brought in a large screen and played the movie when it started to get dark. In hindsight it probably wasn't a great idea to bring the kids.
The reshoots were shot in Oscar-winning editor Verna Fields swimming pool, and if I recall correctly the reaction shots of Hooper were the eyes of the stuntman not Dreyfuss.
Just saw the movie again July 4 in a theater with a lot of film (including my son) people in Hollywood. State of the art sound. Without a doubt, Steven Spielberg’s co-director was John Williams. It’s a horror movie, a monster movie, and an adventure movie, and everything is driven by the score. I jumped three times for real.

JAWS is the ultimate ChickFlick. I'm not into RomComs but give me three men on a boat that I get to spend that much time with - C'mon. And three different men. No - not Kevin Costner or Harrison Ford or Brad Pitt or whatever heartthrob of the moment is but three real and DIFFERENT men. So I have this philosophy of what happens when a woman goes into a pub and runs into these three guys - let's say it's some island in the middle of nowhere because they are still searching for sharks or maybe in this version they land the monster. But at the end of the night who does the woman go home with? Martin Brody who is handsome as hell in a black turtle neck and smokes a good cigarette? Matt Hooper who is brilliant and sexy smart and has a contagious laugh? Or - the mighty Quint? Here's how that plays out - go home with Brody and eventually you walk down the aisle, get married and live a quiet life (minus that one summer) with days overlapping in their same, simple lovely routine. Go home with Hooper and you date madly for six months - move in together - and begin to have you just don't understand me and your smothering me conversations that lead nowhere and have a tumultuous break-up during Christmas. Go home with Quint - for a tumultuous, drunken passionate weekend or two weeks tops before it all goes to hell. But you'll smile every time you think about him for the rest of your life. - - - - Might suppose if you combined elements of all three men you'd get THE PERFECT MAN but until modern science arranged that one - I'll just keep rewatching JAWS for life. PS - I grew up on the beach. ON. THE. BEACH. swam at night in the waves after work until this movie hit the big screen. Then no one went in above their ankles all summer. Thanks for a great show.

Im not a horror fan, and even though i dont consider this technically a horror movie on paper a movie, i wouldn't like it, but i do i wouldn't say top 5 all time for me anyway but i agree it's one of those movies from every age group knows and enjoys.. by the way, surprisingly or not, i just started watching the movie rewatchables this week started with stand by me and just been binging them happy to say not disappointed.. 😅

You're comparing a TV movie to a cinematic masterpiece
This is a great film, my favorite horror film of all time, though there are some things said here that are wrong. Mayor Vaughn is in Jaws 2, so he got re-elected by the public. He was a better character in that film. Also all the scenes of Hopper underwater were not done by Richard Dreyfuss, but by a diving double who provided all the facial reactions and screams. It’s sad that while these podcasts are quite good, certain facts like these that aren’t hard to find out about aren’t corrected by those with you nor do you find them during your research. I do think it’s a shame Steven Spielberg, Roy Scheider and Robert Shaw all got over looked at the Academy Awards for Best Director, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor. Whether they would have won if nominated is one thing, but they deserved to be nominated and it’s a shame they weren’t acknowledged by he Academy. The film was nominated for Best Picture, but that was the only Oscar the film didn’t win. Great film though. Deservingly won 3 Academy Awards, including John Williams’s iconic score, and it’s still an effective film to this day. In the end, that’s a better prize than Best Picture.
Not a horror movie
This pod very disappointingly failed to mention that the Mayor also appeared in Jaws 2 (at least). After the public disaster in Jaws 1, he somehow was able to be (presumably) re-elected and continued to be mayor again! Imagine that! It's some kind of commentary about political corruption or ignorance of the locals or both to have someone that terrible to be re-elected from the 1970s continuing on to today--hopefully we don't have a repeat this year. Your half-ass research on Jaws must be full ass for you not know or remember Mayor Vaughn was in Jaws 2, so obviously was reelected.

Yea the shark breaching and physically landing on the boat would be an awful choice even if the effects were believable. But the fact that this happened with such a clearly fake prop is very cringe worthy today (I think the shark model actually physically bends when it hits). Is it possible this is the origin of the expression “jump the shark”?
No. That would be on Happy Days when Fonzy, riding his motorcycle, jumped over a shark infested pool.... in the parking lot of Arnold's drive-in. This was intended to boost the ratings of a show that had run its course. So, when a show gets desperate for ratings.... they 'jump the shark' with guests stars or lame plotlines (i.e. CSI crossovers, live episode of E.R., etc.).
