When drummers want to get better, they use a metronome. When a metronome wants to get better, it’s uses Gavin 🎉🎉🎉
@TheEasyeman
Well said......😁
Nice ❤
Amen! 🤌🏼
Superb comment 👌 ❤
Superb comment 👌 ❤
Congrats to the band for not getting lost😉
Why the hell would they get lost? If they get lost, they don't deserve to play with a good drummer. Novice musicians can't keep their concentration, they need more experience & more practice
Before putting your clothes in the wash, don't forget to check your pockets for Gavin Harrison's drumming.
One of the greatest drummers alive...so clean ..percise..musical and sonically pleasing to the ear..oh creativity is right off the chart ...into the stratosphere...
Yes,, really ! Incredible how he plays the 1/16 on the high hat inbetween and off beat same time
I go to a lot of drum clinics ....what is amazing is how gavin and Billy Cobham have this ability to pull out the exact tom or exact cymbal that is needed to make the song sound unique and pleasing to the ear....most drummer rotate there sticking around the drum from left to right or right to left ...gavin can do it from the middle tom with left hand going left and right going right ...in otherwords any which way he please
@@steevodrums4749 , you right, yes indeed! Cobhams plays melodies, without stealing the show to his band members , Gavin on similar way. Completely different to Gadd, master of restrictimg playing and smooth snare playing an big big bass drum pedal.
Yes you are correct about Gadd.Im 64 years old and my brother is 70 now..I grew up listening to his records in the basement ...buddy ..Joe Morello ..Louis Belson..etc..Then came Bonham....Ginger Baker and has gone on until today ...now it's Benny Greb..and alot of new younger drummers...love youtube for that...We can watch the historic lineage of many drummers in many genres..Thanks for your insight...
..who’s the guitar?
This is EXACTLY what I expected a master of the pocket to play for this iconic piece of music.
If you want pocket, check out Steve Ferrones burning for Buddy version. This doesn't compare in my opinion.
Indeed - this IS exactly what I expected too…..
Geez we've got the pocket police here. This was obviously meant to be a drumming exhibition rather than pure pocket playing. Chill.
What are your qualifications to make that determination?
@@jazzban😂
GOAT. In less than 7 minutes Gavin demonstrated how he can combine technique + entertainment.
No one is the GOAT
@@Martin_Bernard You're a goat.
@@nroks Go clean your bedroom or your mom will punish you
@@Martin_Bernardwho is “ noone?”
I know this is a cymbal page but damn that snare is legit.
You can always recognize Gavin’s snare. Awesome.
😂😂
One of the truly beautiful things about Gavin's playing (besides...f**king EVERYTHING)...is the drum and cymbal tuning / selection. The drum tuning is absolutely perfect (for his sound) ...and the cymbal selection is so complimentary. And the way he plays the cymbals is as musical as the way he plays the drums. They're as integral a part of his playing as the drums are. They each have a very distinctive 'voice'...and he uses them very skillfully, selectively, and musically to both compliment the drums as well as create their own sonic tapestry. An absolute pleasure to listen to and watch.
Wish the Toms had a little more tone and depth
Gavin playing is pre-mixed
I was the bodyguard of an Italian famous singer where he was the drummer on the tour, he was quite young at the time probably 27 -28 years old and he was a monster already, he was the only musician of the band setting up his drum set his mikes and always play it hard even tough it was all in playback, he was the only musician playing for real and enjoy himself, I still have a very vivid memories of his talent.
@@batouttahell454they’re mixed a bit low here
This recording bears little relationship to reality. Everybody here knows damn well what a live drum set sounds like, and that ain't it. But the playing itself is fantastic.
Ok. This sounds like how I'd expect Gavin Harrison playing funk to sound like.
good or bad?
@@unclefreddy2009 so....the sound of muzak ?
@@unclefreddy2009 I'd be geeking if I heard fills like that waiting at the dentist's office 😂
my man playing fusion on funk hahah
@@unclefreddy2009Then your dentist would have a really good musical taste and knowledge since this is an iconic song by Average White Band
When you think Gavin has done everything on the drums, he introduces the heel-o-tune shortly after 4’10”😂. Mr Harrison - you never cease to amaze with your creativity.
…and LOVE your new The Pineapple Thief album “It Leads to This”!
You are an inspiration! Keep creating!!
Is that what you call it? And wasn’t it just perfectly executed or what? Smooth as silk. Yowza!
I was reading Neil Peart article, and he said Gavin was his favorite listen
That was 10 years ago. Gavin is still my current favorite listen /watch
Fuckin awesome
When Gavin and Neil got together, in around 2002 for lunch in California, Neil told Gavin that he actually used Porcupine Tree’s InAbsentia to find his new home speakers. Rather neat.
I saw a bill bruford clip that he adores Gavin Harrison and thinks he’s the best modern drummer
Great drummer! You can tell this guy is totally relaxed while playing very complex stuff, no show-off, amazing timing!!!
Best Sonor advert ever. Just the most amazing sounding drums.
TRUTH... I play Sonor because of Gavin, Danny Carey, and Tomas Haake.
no doubt
@@ltruddNicko McBrain too
@@genildojuniorhe plays bdc - used to play Sonor.
@@Richh-dt8yz yes, but in the "golden years" and between 15-19, I think, he used Sonor.
I was there for this event. Hadn’t heard of Gavin beforehand, and he quickly became one of my favourite drummers with his performances that night. I videoed some of it and you can clearly hear me gasping at some of his chops
Go check out Porcupine Tree then Oscar, he's the drummer in that band and some of the signatures and rhythms they've come out with this past 20 years or so are awesome.
And checkout The Pineapple Thief as well. Gavin is on the last three albums I believe.

Welcome to the family😎
Gavin is a living legend

Always a delight to see Mr G. Harrison play, one of the best drummers today, great, groove and finesse. I've always liked the sound of his Protean-birch snare. And those hi-hats sounds beautiful.
My absolute favorite drummer. His “bag of tricks” is seemingly endless. Somehow technical and flashy, but SO musical and in the pocket too. As good as it gets. 🤯
Gavin and Danny are the two best in my humble opinion. And Gavin’s drum set is the best sounding. He’s so fluid and in the pocket.
Never heard of Vinnie Colaiuta?
Don't forget Larnell Lewis @@user-ek2xg8uq1j
One of the best sounding live/studio drumkit of the past decade! Absolute control and groove. Never ceases to surprise me.
Sonor and Pearl sound so much better than DW that it's hilarious. I've never once heard a DW that didn't sound like cardboard boxes.
Simon Philips has an amazing drum sound too. Have you seen that clip of Thomas Lang playing them for soundcheck? Laughable difference between them and his DW set. I wish Lang had stayed with Sonor or switched to Tama
Dude, Simon is just a beast of his own level. He engineers his own drum sound to absolute perfection. His drumeo videos show that beautifully.@@PeterDeLuca-rz3dv
That is true. And the one thing that separated DW from the rest which was customization of the kit, is now common practice, so... yeah. @@DavidOakesMusic
Gavin is frightening good. His fills are a matter of research, because they are so creative and unconventional. And playing such intricate fills in a swinging piece like this without butchering the groove is freaking hard. I also love the fact that he plays with perfect dynamics, never overplaying his cymbals and heads. Gavin is a total master.
@@russellupsumgrub9633 they are two completely different drummers, extremely proficient in their own styles. When musicians reach that level of technique, musicality and maturity, there is no "who is the best drummer in the world" babble. Your comment would only be appropriate if you were a 10 year old kid.
@@russellupsumgrub9633 ah, ok. 😴
@@russellupsumgrub9633 wow, dude. You're the best.
Incredible. Every time I listen to him play I'm amazed. We overuse the term "musical" to describe drummers, but that is the term one must use to describe Gavin. He also brings precision and groove all in one package.
My gawd, start to finish a great display of control, technique, fun and just flat out grooooove! More please 😉. Gavin is simply one of the best.
Great performance from Gavin as usual but Zildjian when r u guys gonna mass produce those cup chimes? The drumming community would surely benefit 😉
There's nothing better than live music. It's raw energy, and raw energy feeds the soul.
Dhani Jones
Not only is this man a wizard, those drums sound ridiculously good as always. Never gets old watching Gavin play.
Oh my goodness. I don't have any other words for that...my jaw been on the floor so long I tripped over it.
Hells to the YES! Odd paths through a straight line to make sure all get lost in the jam... until you back beat them back to reality.
You are in the freakin' pocket Gavin!
Hey hey ...Gavin Harrison....He has it all....what a brilliant understanding of music ...groove and entertainment.... inspirational
I am a great admirer of Gavin. I have been drumming for 50 years now I started at the age of 17 and I am now 67. I never have stopt drumming. I still play drums in a rockband. Gavin is my new source of inspiration , I love his "way of drumming his timing, footwork and creatvity. Keep up the good work! Greetings from Holland. I myself have a sonor drumkit and tama speedpedals. Zildjian cymbals and a wooden tama snaredrum.....
Supreme chops and groove with added metric modulation - one of the best drummers in the business.
Gavin Harrison always has the sweetest sounding groove, even when shedding the most outrageous chops around the kit. So musical!
One of thee greatest song grooves ever written, expertly played by the king of the pocket groove…. Goodness..
So much funk from the Scottish Lowlands!! 1974 and Gavin did it proud, BIG props to the band, horns sounded awesome!
Awesome Gavin! Great ideas in the solo too, props to the band for staying so tight there!
I had the privilege of seeing this live. Left me speechless, as usual 😮
Watching Gavin play illicits such an emotional response to his performance that i find it hard to put into words just how good he is. He has such a well defined and unique sound and pocket, it's amazing how consistent he and his drums sound no matter what he's playing. I also love that over the years he's not relying heavily on old tropes, he's somehow both consistent and fresh in his approach.
Gavin played this piece with clean precision and every single note was heard . Gavin is truly one of my favorites to watch!
I’m a big fan of Gavin’s custom chimes!
Please release those,zildjian!🙏
Not sure they can, he literally cut his old cymbals himself, they didn’t design them.
@@drums4lyfe0987 they actually made some for him.
The groove, dynamics, and time sense of that performance is off the charts!!! ❤❤❤
Fantastic way to celebrate 400 years in the business. Here's to 500! 🎉👏🥂
Kudos to the engineer(s) who mic'd and mixed this performance (& kit) perfectly; to highlight a top shelf drummer making the pocket musical. Zildjian cymbals are the standard of excellence by which all other cymbals are, and will ever be compared.
Absolute perfection. Love, love, love what you do, Sir, and how you do it!
What a delight to my ears! G.H is fenomenal!! 👏🏼
God damn this man never fails to amaze and inspire me!
Gavin is so insanely badass it's frightening!
Always love to watch Gavin play. Such an exciting and inventive player and the sound of those drums. Perfect!
Understated yet commanding performance. Young aspiring professional drummers observe, watch and listen!
Flawless! Best multi-genre drummer alive!
Tight! Hats sound amazing
Thank y'all for allowing me to visualize such an amazing timekeeper. I appreciate you.
During my career as a FOH engineer I’ve had the pleasure and privilege of working with some fantastic drummers in some great bands - Mike Mangini (Dream Theater); Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater); Anastasios 'Toss' Panos (Toy Matinee); Virgil Donati (Steve Vai); Jeremy Colson (Steve Vai); Chris Frazier (Steve Vai); Jimmy ‘The Rev’ Sullivan (Avenged Sevenfold); Will Kennedy (Yellowjackets); Pat Torpey (Mr. Big); Casey Scheuerell (Kitaro); Greg Bissonette (Joe Satriani); Jonathan Mover (Joe Satriani); Shawn Drover (Megadeth); Mark Brzezicki (Procol Harum); Bun E. Carlos (Cheap Trick); - but Gavin’s drum tuning, precision, fluidity and sheer musicality still floors me. Fabulous. What a gift it must be to have this guy's playing and sound as part of your live mix. Sonic taste is, of course, a very personal thing, but with apologies and all due respect to some of the aforementioned drummers, when it comes to cymbals Zildjians have always sounded the most musical to my ears regardless of musical genre.
Couldn't agree more! I use his playing to tune my rigs all the time! I've gotten to work with some of those in your list as well (Doing FOH at NAMM has it's perks lol!) and you're bang on! On of the greats that always made life of an engineer easy as well is David Garibaldi, tuning and taste!
Glad you had the pleasure too. I'm sure your FOH spot at NAMM was well-earned, and working with the likes of these guys is the part of the reward that means the most to those of us who are genuinely all about the sound and the music. Good for you.@@tythesoundguy
The fast hat to kick combo in the beginning is such ear-candy! A lot to learn from this performance alone.
Fantastic as always! I love your playing, Gavin 👏😲
Great timing awesome drummer.
I can hear the indiscipline of Bill Bruford - It's so incredible!!
Lindo né mano
What a joy to watch/listen to this man play drums... there's really not much to add here. GH's drumming is truly legendary.
Simply amazing :)
Gavin is my favorite (living) drummer.
SUPERBE performance Mister Gavin !!! 🤩🥁🔝🙌🏻🔥😍
Sooooo precise and crisp! Lovely ❤
Gavin is such a beast. The most tasteful drumming out there.
Gavin Harrison's snare tune is always awesome.
The king of pocket and groove.
Love his playing! The foot thing is a first I have never seen! Elbow yes! Great performance!
Those meter changes blew my mind 🤯 3:23
Not meter changes. The meter was the same…..displacement and metric modulation you mean.
Love that! Beautful drumming Gavin! 🔥
I love his backwards fills
In my opinion, Gavin and Vinnie are the best all-around drummers in the world. They can play anything thrown at them.
I agree. And they make it sound so natural and relaxed. Two of the greatest for sure. Not very spicy drummers, just the right flavour.
Agree: Add two more Todd Sucherman and @NickDiVirgilio.
@@PabloJ1968 for sure and Josh Freese of Sting The Vandals, Michael Bible’, The Offspring, Nine Inch Nails, A Perfect Circle, Devo, and hundreds more. Appears on over 500 albums, and Vinnie’s the one who discovered & befriended him at 12. There’s nothing he can’t play and make ls it look effortless. I’d argue that Freese can play upper tempo tracks better than anyone. IMO of course.
I would add Todd Sucherman and Keith carlock to that list as well
@@chadcarrdrums Great studio guy, who'd need to be the face of a band for more people to recognize it. I recall a APC tour where he showed up with a leg break and played the set left legged on the bass drum. Who does that? lol
Majestic drumming. killer funky chops .love it !
Epic! Awesome job!!
Super fine drumming. I love his work.
Those hi hats sound absolutely amazing. All of his cymbals sound absolutely amazing. So musical.
Simply Amazing ! Thank you Gavin...
Beautiful work!!
I gained so much pleasure from watching this. Superb drum sound and tuning.
That was a great night, thank you Zildjian 🤘🏻🥁🤘🏻
I always love watching Gavin, he always inspires! Absolute perfection!
I'm thoroughly impressed! Got to listen to this often!! A true impresario!❤
Actually took quite a few of the new vibes of the last 10years in drumming creativity and made sense of them in this session. Excellent work. 🎉🎉 progress 🎭
Man, Mr GH gives a time clinic for the ages, all with timeless Zildjians and a top notch Sonor kit that sounds absolutely perfectly balanced from kick to snare to tom... a musical masterwork.
Every single hit in this video has soul. Amazing feel and taste! Drum god. ❤❤❤
Incredible feel - immaculate timing - signature sound and groove.
Excellent, Gavin and the band!
Excellent… solid groove with finesse and taste!!
Brilliant Gavin, the drumming I like smooth and flowing, ⭐️⭐️🙏🙏
Amazing groove! Feelin' this. 🥁

Terrific--such mastery-such tasty fills and syncopation.
what an amazing performance omg!!
love your work!!
He’s such an amazing musician, this song just shows why he’s one of my all-time favorite drummers!🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁
One of the best snare sounds!
Well he has come on since I last saw him very good, I sold lots of Zildjians while at B & H in Oz 400 is a long time thanks for sending this.
best sounding kit in the business.
I've always played Pearl but I'd give my left nut for that Sonor kit.
God Gavin’s kit always sounds magical
Love it..!
Oh god those splash hits
Absolutely 💯 percent great drumming 🥁
Feels like he's playing Porcupine Tree medley with a funk backing track 😂
What a player we need this whole concert released
love his playing, love his sound
