Lawrence Firefighters Receive Cutting-Edge Cancer Screenings

City of Lawrence firefighters are getting a unique opportunity to receive cutting edge Galleri Test cancer screening - at no cost them or to City of Lawrence Fire Department, thanks to an innovative partnership between the city, GRAIL Bio, and Community Health Network.
Firefighters are at 14 percent greater risk of dying a cancer-related death than the general population because of the variety of hazardous substances they encounter while battling a blaze. A fire’s searing temperatures can turn otherwise benign objects into sources of carcinogenic gases, vapors, and particulates.
The Galleri® test is a multi-cancer early detection blood test designed to detect more than 50 types of cancer in their early stages. Nearly 90% of City of Lawrence firefighters have signed up for the voluntary screening.
