  • Embark on a time-traveling adventure as I, a former miner at Geevor, guide you through the underground realms experienced by mine workers spanning two centuries. Join me on an insightful exploration, delving into the harsh realities faced by miners from 200 years ago up to the brink of modern times.
We see the remains of a Cornish Bob Pit:
A Cornish bob pit, also known as a Cornish whim, is a traditional mining apparatus used in Cornwall, England. It's an integral part of the mining engine system.
The Cornish bob pit is associated with the operation of a whimsy, which is a type of winding engine used to raise and lower materials, miners, and ore in a mine shaft.
The bob pit is essentially a deep pit or shaft adjacent to the mine, and it houses a large reciprocating beam. This beam is connected to the whimsy engine, and its movement is utilized to operate the winding gear in the mine shaft.
The whimsy, powered by steam or other energy sources, would raise and lower the heavy loads using the reciprocating motion of the bob pit's beam.
    Adits:
An adit is a horizontal or nearly horizontal passage driven into a mine from the surface. Unlike a vertical shaft, adits are driven into the side of a hill or mountain to access the underground workings.
Adits are commonly used when an ore body is located inside the mountain but above the adjacent valley floor or coastal plain. They are driven into the rock to intersect the mineral veins.
In cases where the mineral vein is exposed at the surface, the adit may follow the lode or vein until it is worked out. Adits can have various shapes and directions, and their alignment depends on the geology of the deposit.
Adits are particularly useful for drainage, providing an outlet for water to flow out of the mine. They can also serve as access points for miners and materials without the need for vertical shafts.
The term "drift mining" is often used when adits are employed for ore extraction. Drift mining involves following the ore body along the direction of the deposit using horizontal tunnels.
In summary, a Cornish bob pit is a component of the winding system in a mine, while adits are horizontal passages driven into the side of a mountain or hill to access and extract minerals from underground deposits. Both play crucial roles in the historical mining practices of Cornwall.

I'll take my hat off to you folk. As someone who is filled with dread and horror of holes with water in them, nothing, even a seam of gold, would induce me to go down there.

Wow, I think you've just uploaded one of my favourite mining videos of all time!!. Your either brave or insane to go down there, had me on the edge of my seat lol. Epic adventure. Hopefully going down my first mine next month with the local caving club, a nice gentle mine to start, nothing like this lol, but they do ones like this too.
We do have a local adit that holds some secrets of the 17th century around here but it's completely flooded. We are on a mission next month to drop the water level so some of the guys can go down and try and resolve some of it's mysteries.

This is fantastic stuff. Love it! All my childhood holidays were spent around Cornish mining areas. It's a wonder I survived to grow up really. In those days the protection around an old shaft was usually a stone wall less than 2 feet high, or occasionally a broken down barbed wire fence.

I remember those days too, well scary but I never ventured underground then, actually is was a Camborne School of Mines guy who got me into this amazing hobby.

How much risk are you actually taking? I have got to assume you do know what you are doing and know when to stop and when to go.

    • @GaryParrott
      @GaryParrott  Před 9 lety +1

Nick Breen Minimal risk, dual line descents and gas meters where required. You can never be 100% safe doing this, I was an ex tin miner at Geevor drilling and blasting.

Fascinating stuff Gary..used spend my summer holidays in cornwall in a little village called Trewenack...loved every minute of it.... that was over 40 yrs ago...but tin mines always amazed me.... the engine houses the dodgey shaft openings and all the old out buildings...loved it.. haven't been back to cornwall for many years but still fascinated.i even got books on it... The J C Burrow picture are wonderful..have you seen them?? first time mines had been photographed with flash ...keep up the good work mate... wish i could go with you...ha ha

Yes seen his pictures and a lot of originals by other old photographers. We are lucky with our local environment but building estates are slowly destroying this as Cornwall turns to concrete, we often have to rush in take some pictures or videos and then they are covered over..

Yes it is, not a good way to go as the water is heavily polluted and needs cleaning up.
