I am the original owner of a 1976 914 with 26,000 miles on it. I see this car and it saddens me that someone, or all of the previous owners, could let a car end up in that condition. Kudos to you for saving in from the crusher. I think CZcams is responsible for saving many vehicles in the name or "content".
"TEXAS" you've come so far, you give us DIY'ers hope we can too, txs for sharing your self-taught metal working skills...
Thanks man! Learning together! =)
CT, your patience is admirable. For me, each of your videos is like a training in self-confidence and "never give up". Thank you.
I appreciate that! =)
CT, the best thing about your channel is that the average guy can relate to you!!!
Thanks man! I appreciate that! I try to keep it real. =)
Yay!!!! A new project that wont be finished!!!!🎉
fuel for the fire my friend! =)
You should call yourself CT VW chop shop your good at stripping the old bugs down
Yes, I'm pretty good at taking things apart! =)
I bought a non-running ‘75 2.0L in ‘93 as a 15. Dad & I had it running after fuel line, spark plugs & injector work. it was painted in winter ‘93 & I daily drove it in ‘94. it’s been inside & covered this whole time, so the paint on it has been there twice as long as the original paint was ever. they’re super fun, but started me on the 911 journey & I always have one ready to go. a 914 is a gateway drug
you are on point about the gate...I'm already wanting a 911....It will happen! =) break out the 914 and take it for a spin!
Well CT, the swamp monsters is still ahead of you. With your caveman approach, get a bigger club and heaver rock.
haha! I love it! =)
I think it’s cool that CT can have a bunch of different projects going on. If I were in his shoes, I might get burnt out from time to time and want to just get away from it for a bit. Working on something else could be refreshing…..and besides …he can. Remember, it’s basically an “entertainment” thing…for our free enjoyment….somewhat less of a “car flipping” thing. (In my opinion).
It's all about having fun and learning. Thanks buddy! =)
Yeah, but I'd like to see at least one project completed to the point it was running and driving on an everyday basis. I first tuned in when he was working on "Rusty" the Volkswagen bus, then Swamp Dragon Ford 150, then the VW Bug. None of them have been wrapped up.
914, such an amazing and underappreciated car. One of the best handling porsches ever.
Love your optimism of 90 days, make it happen, keep your sense of humor
Always good to start a new project CT 👍 good luck
Lots of fun coming along for the ride. Learn something new on every episode. Thanks for doing what you do.
Thanks buddy!
Nice to see your confidence level in addressing some of this metalwork that I think would have put you off in the past.
You are a brave man, taking the targa top and both doors off at the same time with that much body rust. These bodies are known to taco w/o some sort of a-b pillar supports
Love these cars. If I was restoring it I would right down everything to be replaced, order it and then start . It would be a massive inspiration with all the new parts around me !
This is going to be a journey 😮
Thanks for uploading these video's CT! I'm about to strip my 1976 914 to get it a fresh coat of paint. It's now red but I'm turning it back into the original Nepal Orange. Your content is super helpful to see how to dismantle the car. Now I know how I can get the chrome strips from the targa bar for instance. Good luck with your project! Greetings from The Netherlands!
Great video, thank you!
Here we go, have fun and looking forward to see how you progress.
CT the only man on CZcams who never finishes a project before he starts a new one 😂
No, esta es la primera vez en años que termino primero un proyecto y ahora comienza otro.
I'm like a fine wine. It' gets better with time. =) Stick around buddy! =)
Nice kit..
Thanks 👍
Saludos de Mexico CT
Thanks Ricardo! =)
Very cool project! I love these cars!! Wished I had more space for more than one.
If you don't get another car to take apart soon, you'll have to start finishing something!
HAHA! =) Hey Darryl stay tuned my friend! =)
CT baby,,you are doing great,,by the way, has anybody told you, you have a great voice,,I mean it,,try some classes,,potential is there, cheers.
Thanks Kevin! I've heard that a time or two! =)
Amazing work!
Thanks buddy! =)
Enjoy! Thanks for saving another one ;)
Hey Ian! I've been being watching you buddy! =) Thanks for making all the great restoration repair videos!
Lovin it.
Thanks buddy!
I love you brutha, and I always get sooo nervous when you're working near sharp stuff/glass without some hand protection :) Excited to see how you progress through this one!
I'm sure someone probably already mentioned it, but just in case: L31M is Scarlet Red...basically VW's version on Guards Red.
Thanks man! haha! =)
914 had a hard ride. i remember it well. only ride a close 2nd was my 1970 dodge charger 500. after that was both my chevy vega's 72 & 74. well good work hope all goes well 👍 maybe knowing you can add extra cushion to the seats. & jack the body height up. it didnt like potholes or speed bumps. smashed the front spoiler LOTS.
There’s a great video by 914 rubber on how to remove the top dash that has to come off before the rest. 5 or 8 of those plastic knob nuts, like the tail light lens holders. You also need to remove the two screws holding the cover to the steering column, to in plug the wire cluster. The gauges will come out the holes, but you need to reach behind and undo the Speedo cable, then you can map the wires, and GENTLY, twist the light holders (lefty loosy) to undo them. Those switches require a tool called an escutcheon tool.
Thanks man! good info! =)
Those nuts are plastic but are not like the taillight nuts. I think they are 13 or 10 mm
They're 13mm M8 plastic nuts, and they're ridiculously difficult to get at! I forget how many of them there are (9, maybe), but the recommendation of finding the video showing where they are is a good one. I think I chopped a crappy old spanner in half to make a short one to get onto some of them. Everything about getting the dash and fresh air blower system out of a 914 is very difficult. If the design brief was 'design every aspect of the dash so it's as awkward as possible', I'd say they succeeded!
I admire the optimisim of getting all that done on 90 days. I'm about 6 years into my '75 restoration now, although I don't got to spent that much time on it.
it's crispy but you have the replacement metal and your magic metal wand is dialed !
You have to call me "Dragon" !!! =) Swamp Dragon!
Nice! Love the color
I have a mk2 Golf in Ly3d 😁
Very cool! 👍
Спасибо! Давно вас смотрю!
90 days!!! I'll be following along CT! It's a little crispy here and there, but I didn't see anything scary as you were tearing it down.
Thanks Greg! Fingers crossed!
seeeeee, por primera vez terminaste una cosa y ahora comenzamos otra, muy bien.
Can't wait to watch it 😁 !
Thanks buddy! =)
Would be a good goal for 90 days. but I think the minimum is about 6 month's for me. Those are not as tight tolerance as an early oval window so the ending stretch wont be as bad as mine.
Hey Mike you could probably restore this 914 in 30 days with your skills brother! =) The Oval looks amazing! =)
I was shouting at you the whole time you were removing the side targa bar trim and front turn signals to look under the fenders and see the small bolts that hold that stuff on the car!
I thought I heard someone yelling! =)
Good.job Nice car 👍👍👍👏👏👏cool job
Thank you! 👍
The upper number on the Karmann tag in the doorjamb is the body number assigned by Karmann. It is not the same as the factory's VIN number found on the metal plate along the left hand lower side of the windshield . The VIN number is also stamped on the inside of the RF fender and on the trunk floor near the ride side rear area. This is the VIN number used on the car's title. The lower number on the Karmann doorjamb tag is just the factory's paint code for the car. If you want to know what options the car had from the factory, you need to use the VIN number and buy the Kardex info sheet from the Porsche factory.
I would take that whole piece at the bottom of the windshield off. The vent box is most likely rusted out and will allow water to get inside the vehicle if it's like most other cars. It would probably take just as long to try to fix the rusted areas as it would to replace the whole piece.
Yes, that could be an option. I'm looking for a parts car now. Thank you! =)
This man likes troubles !😅
yes he does! =)
L31M colour code is Scarlet (Mars) Red, and Karosserie Nr. is the Chassis Nr.
Good to know! Thank you =)
Hey CT, just a suggestion from one who made this mistake. Do not weld anything to the frame of this car without the doors in place and closed! I did and they would not fit afterwards. I had to cut my new longs and move them to make doors fit correctly! Otherwise, most everything you need should be available! Two weeks!? Yeah! Sure!
CT you have to disconnect the windshield wipers water pump lines they are connected to the switch that's why you can't pull them out. As soon as you cut those lines that whole entire turn signal switch unit will come off.
God bless you all.
So much work CT , but it's gonna be a great car !
I sorry ,but all I know Hella is an original german quality brand . I had light bulbs from them .
Waitin' for the next video .
Thanks buddy! =)
When i was in HS you could buy one R&D for +/-$1500. They were considered a posers porsche. If we only knew then what we do now! Cheers
The trick on removing the old Phillips head screws is to first turn them to the right as if you are trying to tightened them up a little, and then turning left to loosen them. I have found that this trick works most of the time.
Thanks ST Straight Ahead ! Think Good Thoughts ! Dont feed The Negative ! ✌😎
Thanks Mike! That is good advice! =)
That rubber trim with the metal backing is actually an inner trim piece piece that goes on top of the dash board and up against the bottom area of the windshield once the windshield is glued in the car. It hides the lower seam along the bottom of the windshield. 914Rubber sells new ones.
That is good info buddy! Thank you! =)
The number on the door sill is the chassis number. As you can see it says Karmann, the same guys who did the Karmann Ghia. Back in those days the chassis/engine was produced by VW or Porsche, and the body was a Karmann design/production. So you have a serial number and a chassis number by each production house. Also this account for a difference in quality of the production. Karmann had beautiful designs, but they sure used flimsy materials. Hey CT, for another small targa toy you should find yourself a Fiat X1/9.. 🙂 I LOVE targas...
That is great info man! Thank you! Yes, the targas are really cool!
What’s up CT. Hope you are doing well. 90 days is a big goal. If you do it will be the first car you finish on the channel. Do you think the bug will be finished first? I got a new job that has me working six days a week so progress on the Westy has slowed down to a crawl.
Hey buddy, I recently watched a video from Andrew Huberman who stated that 90 days is a good starting point to achieve any goal...not sure if his study included restoring a car....haha =) Will see what happens. You have to start somewhere and 90 days seems achievable based on the experience I had with the 65 beetle over the last 12 months. I feel like the 914 needs less work overall...but time will tell. Anything could happen and life does get in the way. The beetle is basically done in my eyes...there are a few more details that have to be worked out and we will get to those soon. It's like a cake that just needs some candy sprinkles! =) I hope your new does is going well. Get on your project when you can.
Cool, yeah I think it's possible if you just plug away at it everyday. Just like those big budget tv car shows. I think Andrew Huberman is a skater too. I saw he did an interview on the Nine Club. @@CTmoog
Steele Rubber is the source for replacement weatherstripping
Hi! Great job! How long did it take you the restauration?
Best regards
with the dimmer switch area the plastic around that there are screws on the bottom
Hi Ct
you will never to be able to finish this car in ninety days. To make it look brand new again.
some of that trim is like tissue paper!
19:53 The upper number Karosserie which means Chassis is the Chassisnumber
the number below is the colorcode and Kunstharzlack means epoxylacquer
31 M Ibizarot
Hello it was a shame you damaged all that trim from around the window, looks expensive to replace!
Next time you come up against this type of job, it might be an idea to use a heat gun to soften the adhesive as you remove it.
I agree.....heat may have helped. I will do that on the next one.
CT is my guy 😂
Thanks buddy! =)
I have a 76, 2.0, Are you going to put the "Cost" to replace everything? I love it, This will help me. TY
Awesome! Yes, I can do a break down on all the parts and materials as we get deeper into the build. =)
Check with Restoration Design on the piece near the dash
I suppose this black stuff holding the windscreen against the body is still in use today. If I'm not mistaken, it's some extra - strong asphalt - based glue that remains flexible. If you don't get this black stuff in a car parts store, some car glass service should have it ready. 18:45: The design of the heater channel pretty much shows how Porsches and Volkswagens were built with similar layouts and parts throughout the late 1960s - 80s. The so - called "KdF - Wagen" (which was to be the Beetle / Käfer after the War) was a design by Ferdinand "Ferry" Porsche, so here we are!
20:00: Right, L31M is the colour code for the original paint. Achtung! "Kunstharzlack" means that this is a resin (epoxy) - based lacqer, unlike the water - based paint used today! Maybe epoxy - based primers are recommended, but again I'm not sure. I think some car - painting specialist knows more! In any case, using a wrong kind of primer could result in the final layer getting ripples or flaking off.
150008 could be a serial number used for special edition cars or bodies fabricated by Karmann, I believe. It could be that the chassis and the body have different serial No.s!
Of course, "Made in Western Germany", when we still had this Commie - occupied part of Germany further East!
All the best!
But what will become of the VW Beetle? The Porsche 914 will become a new never-ending story. Or has the VW Beetle already been sold?
What about the Ghia?
I had my taillights off for my restoration. So if you have trouble putting them on I have a wiring diagram
awesome thank you!
19:55 that's right, thats paint.
They literally called it: artistic gummy varnish 😂
haha! =)
Solid brown is ground
good to know.
That is factor sealer on the windshield
Why wouldn’t you finish rusty or your Karmann Ghia before starting another project?
I sold Rusty to Dennis at Air-cooled-haus. He is completely restoring Rusty. I'm not feeling the Ghia right now.
The rear window rubber is available fr 914 rubber
There are a bunch of plastic nuts way up under the dash. Have to really search for them.
Thanks Mike! I will look for them.
I have some of the window trim.
Reply and I can give you contact information
Fenders are welded on. Don’t remove
you have to take the dimmer switch out first I think youre getting in a hurry
Unfortunately, it looks like they installed that windshield with urethane, you need 5/16 butyl rubber to install it like it was from the factory, and new trim clips of course. I'm surprised that they didn't use a gasket like on the VW.
Yes, I think you are correct. It was stuck in there pretty good.
Curious who got the other 914s. A local enthusiast?
yes, three local guys. two of them are just down the road from me. I plan on going over and checking on the progress soon. I'll bring you guys along for the ride.
Door stays are available from 914 rubber
Rocker panels and jack points are available from Restoration Design in Ontario
The front area of the dash is a separate piece
Do you still have the swamp dragon?
Yes, it needs some love! =)
I think it’s great that you have the balls to just forge ahead with stuff, but it’s hard to watch when I see you use brute force and cost your project more money, those butterfly horn buttons are not being remanufactured and what you had was fixable. Don’t you remember lefty loosy righty tighty? Take a second, check the web, and save some money and headaches.
I agree man...I really thought I had it and the next thing I know it was stuck....believe me if I could have saved the trim and the horn button I would have...I will have to find a parts car for some stuff like that.
What happened to the other 914? How about finishing a project?
Sold the other 3 to fund the beetle project. Did you watch the last 50 episodes? It's basically done !=)
Have you ever thought about using a heat gun
yes....that might have helped although this one was stuck pretty bad. It's ok 914 rubber has the new trim and it looks awesome!
SAND BLAST IT
no way...no more sand blasting for me. it's a mess....
Use a magnet on the body to find out what is medal or filler.
🇧🇷👍👍👍🙏🙏
Hey mate, what's with the potato sacks? The body does not appear to be too bad!
Those are for working with the trees on the tree farm. They use them to protect the root ball during shipping.
@@CTmoog Cheers!
its time to put back together your older car ,
karosserie means Body, in German. So that is Body Number
JUST VIN! Not VIN Number!
Your can fix up the dash easy
KAROSSERIE = body #
Thanks buddy!
That trim is really stuck on there
Yes it is...
After 40 years of owning 2 914s, I'm getting out of the business. Selling my '75 this month. Fun cars, but I can't get in and out of them without a knee or hip joint complaining.
Have you seen Jay Leno getting in and out of his cars? maybe you can rub some icy hot on there before you go for a ride. where are located and how much?
@@CTmoog I got a 4WD VW Vanagon and a Fiat Campagnola 4x4. All I have to do is turn and slide out of the seat to get out. Not going back to cars that are 6 inches off the ground. The 914 will be up on BaT shortly. We're up in the Seattle area.
Did anyone actually watch an hour and a half of taking a rusty car apart?😂
haha! you must be new! Welcome! =)
👍
IDK man, I'd take everything useable off it and scrap that body and find another one
It's pretty bad but I think we can fix it! =)
Under the windshield, at the dash; looks like remnants of a pinch weld to me. The rubber just rotted away leaving just the metal pinch rails.
Yes, that what it looks like to me too. Thank you! =)
It looks like a ant car
