    I have been getting nice results setting my zebras to 55 +-1 and exposing to a 18 percent grey on my x-rite color checker. Use the color checker to color grade. I still am learning how to do a run and gun setup. For that I just use the cameras meter and go 1.7 over exposed and then apply a Sony lut. Make some adjustments after I apply the lut but I’m gonna try before like you did and see how it looks.

    Thank you so much for this! I was wondering what is your Picture Profile setting? Because I have mine set at slog3, s-gamut3.cine, and saturation at +12, detail -3, and in Color Depth I turned down the Red down to -5. I'm also editing in FCPX and I have the Phantom luts as well as Geral Undone's luts, as well as the correct Aces conversion from Davinci 14. I'm finding it that when I color correct in FCPX, if I add saturation, I am adding waaaay too much red, especially for Skin Tone. So to avoid this I turn down the Red in Color Depth a bit. But I'm curious what your Picture Profile details are. I'm looking to do quick shoot and post type of editing, with minimum color grading in my work flow. Thanks again for this video, it helped me tremendously.

      No, 50-60 is pretty dark for the skin tones, so your highlights are well protected. And if a face is most important in your shot, over exposing the highlights is okay anyway as the face is the important part of the image. Bit SLOG3 has so much dynamic range that it's actually hard to clip the highlights.

    • @pascalbasel
      @pascalbasel  Před 2 lety +1

      94+ means highlights clipping. That’s another way to expose, what I don’t recommend in Slog3 on the a7Siii, a7iv etc. At 50% they show you perfect exposure for bright skin but don’t have anything to so with clipping.

    • @pascalbasel
      @pascalbasel  Před 2 lety +2

      You shouldn't change these settings if you use conversion LUTs that don't require any changes. Just use Slog3 S.Gamut3.Cine and don't change anything else in PP8. If it's too flat after applying the LUT, add contrast etc after applying the LUT. Phantom LUTs are still just the first step and not necessarily the final edit.

    When shooting slog3 on the a7siii, how often do you let the sky get blown out? i try to stay 1.7-2.0 stops above 0 but usually the sky is clipped. if i try to save details in the sky, it usually drops below 1.7 which i'm told is what i should be shooting at for slog3

    • @pascalbasel
      @pascalbasel  Před 3 lety +1

      Don't give too much attention to the numbers. If the sky is important, expose for a good looking sky, even if you go -1 or so. And if a face is more important, it's always okay to blow out the sky. That's the same on every camera. But I actually found it quite hard to clip the highlights if I keep the bright skin to 50% zebra. You can actually expose quite dark on this camera and lift the shadows in post if needed.

    wonder that,do you add sharpness to the S-log3 footage in post?
    cause the default setting in S-log3 is -7 in sharpness

    When you mean expose slog 3 and you’re talking about 1.7-2 stops what do you mean by that and how do I get it in that range ? I’m new to using the sonya7siii

    Is slog good at low light conditions

    • @pascalbasel
      @pascalbasel  Před 3 lety +1

      Yes, you see more noise straight out of camera, but it disappears after color grading. That's why it's important to expose higher if you film in low light. So the shadows are higher above the noise floor.

    Hi man! Great video. I've been fortunate enough to get good results with exposing slog3 but recentely faced an issue which I couldn't really sort out before watching this video. You said at the end that Bright skin to 50-60 zebra - and by that do you mean that you expose until you see zebras in the skin and then get a slightly down from there so that there is no zebras in the skin?
    Appreciate your content, thank you anyways :)

    Ich habe bei meiner Sony ZVE1 folgendes Problem:
    Wenn ich die Kamera im Aufnahme Modus "Man. Belichtung" habe, kann ich nicht gleichzeitig den ISO + Belichtungswert einstellen. Somit kann ich nicht die richtige Exposure för meine SLOG3 Footage auswählen, da entweder die Belichtung automatisch eingestellt wird oder der ISO, ich möchte jedoch beides manuell Einstellen können, ohne diesen Aufnahme Modus zu wechseln, da die anderen Modi etweder den SHutter autoamtisch regeln oder die Blende.

    I've used the a7S in the past, but the color science of this camera wasn't particularly good.
    But when I watched this video, I realized that the a7sⅢ was really beautiful in color and became a great camera.

    • @pascalbasel
      @pascalbasel  Před 3 lety

      Yeah, the color science has changed but also the Phantom LUTs have different versions, also for the old color science. However, I'm not sure if that video also counts for older Sony cameras as SLOG3 has more noise in the shadows. So you likely have to expose higher.

  • @yumyumkevin
    @yumyumkevin Před 2 lety +1

    What ISO do you stay at? Do you only stay at 640 and 12800?
    Or do you bounce around to random ISOs? becuase I am getting alot of noise in my shadows.

    • @pascalbasel
      @pascalbasel  Před 2 lety

      Usually base isos but if I have to, I ramp it up. Noise in the shadows straight out of camera is normal in log profiles. That disappears when you color grade it. Even iso 2000 gives me very good results on the a7siii

  • @Stichbe

    With Sony A7S3: Hello never made a good picture with s-log 3 in situations low light extremely too much noise. Yes I overexposed 1,7 stop.
    Same with s-log2 overexposed 1,7 stops much noise but less noise. Nog good. Als with my Sony FS7 (changed now for the A7S3) too ,much noise with s-log3.
    But with cinetone it's very good as good as NO NOISE!!! How is it possible???

    • @pascalbasel
      @pascalbasel  Před 2 lety +1

      S-Cinetone has less dynamic range, while SLOG3 gives you the full dynamic range of sensor, including the noise floor. So when talking about noise you're actually talking about dynamic range as with less dynamic range the noise floor gets cut off, but therefore you also don't use the sensor to its full potential.
      I shot at ISO 16000 with the a7Siii only at camp fire light in SLOG3 and after color grading, there is no noise visible unless you crop in 300% or so. That's the reason why you should always expose by +1,7 - +2, so you can lower the exposure again during the color grade, what hides the noise in the shadows. Having noise straight out of camera in log profiles is normal. What counts is how it looks after the color grade.
      Also stick to the native ISOs (640 & 12800 on the a7Siii) as close as possible to avoid noise. 12800 gives less noise as 10000 because it's native.

      Make money with the camera or whatever you have and save money to buy better ones. Btw. this camera is overkill for most people. A GH5 or Fuji X-T4 can do 90% of it, what's enough for most jobs snd especially for CZcams.

    50% doesn’t work good with darker skin tone. For Asian and brownish color skin, I use 65-75%.

    • @pascalbasel
      @pascalbasel  Před 2 lety

      For my skin 55% +-2 setting works perfectly. With the LUTs I use that puts my skin at about 70ire. So perfect exposure there.
