In 1967, Yutaka Katayama, or Mr. K, is now President of Nissan North America. He’s just been called to Nissan HQ to select a concept design to replace the aging Fairlady Roadster. But unbeknownst to the other executives on the selection committee, Mr. K has been quietly operating behind the scenes to push his preferred design through. The concept is referred to as codename “Z,” and it isn’t really a new generation roadster at all- it’s a powerful new sports coupe, and something that Mr. K believes will be a huge success in the US market. Today on Past Gas, part two of our series on Datsun and Nissan- how did Mr. K’s leadership of Datsun in the US change the entire company? How did he become known as “the father of the Z car”? And how did Nissan help create an entire generation of car enthusiasts?

Love the show! I just have 1 request. Can you please add video to the podcast on spotify? I mostly listen to this on spotify when I am on the go, such as mowing the lawn. However, when you pull up a picture of a vehicle you are talking about I would enjoy being able to pull out my phone, open the video, and see what it looks like as well. Thank you! Keep up the amazing work!

Ive been a fan since the first days of donut in 2016. Love the show, and car culture. I come to emphasize the importance of a episode on puertorican drag racing scene. Because of the jones act, cars in Puerto Rico are usually taxed up to 50%. So when the people modified there cars they chose toyotas, mazdas, Mitsubishis, datsuns, VW etc etc. Cars they could afford. And this started the culture of building import cars. From the top 25 fastest imports in the world. 17 are from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷. Including the fastest. Natty racing, a 2000+hp 2jz powered scion with its best et of 5.54 @ 263mph. We have been first in the 10s, 9s, 8, 7, 6, and now 5 sec. From 3tc, side draft carburated 10sec powered datsuns. To cars like La otra, a 13B 1000+hp 6sec 200+mph toyota starlet, roaming the streets of PR in "street legal" form. Routinely tunners from PR like Lazcano, Oso, mec tech, travel to the middle east, Australia, new Zealand, the US, to compete, and tune cars. Company's like Gato performance, vr tuning, jce, are elite, in building and engineering some of the best performance parts for the import scene. So please do this. You will not be disappointed ! Thanks!!!

There was never a KA24DET. There was a KA24DE and KA24E, which were dual and single overhead cam respectively; the D in the name stands for dual overhead cams whereas a T stands for turbocharger and the KA engine was never factory turbocharged.

I love the thought that even though they weren't terrible cars, Nissan lost $1,000 on each one they sold (me).

ooh yes the Datsuns of the 70's. The 180B coupe, the 510, 240Z, Violet coupe, so many really beautiful cars. Datsun only made beautiful cars in the 70's. I feel in the '80's it was all over, and Datsun / Nissan never really came back and never again produced a really beautiful car.

Datsun walked so that Nissan could run...and then trip and fall and break their ankle.

So, if you consider a Big 3 of Japan. It'd easily be Honda, Toyota, and Nissan. If Nissan being wild with their sakes and design makes them similar to Dodge. I think Honda would be like Chevy and Toyota like Ford. Simply due to the size of fan loyalty.

A lady from my work has a datsun 510 wagon . It doesn't run by any means. She offered to sell it to me for 500 bucks! So, the answer to ur 10k question on ur job application (found on past gas sponsor Indeed) is ,first take my wife and daughter to l.a and see the sights. (Disney, peterson museum). Then I'd put a sr swap in that 510. Leaving the patina if funds run out of course. I'm go before show lol.
    Anyway ,
keep em between the ditches .
    And hire Ryan D Adams.

I think the new Z would sell decently if they didn’t cost 70 grand at the dealership…. Nobody who wants a Z is paying that.

I don't know why the s12 200sx gets so much hate? What do u's guy's think huh? I think they're pretty rad. The fastback and those grid taillights are neat. A poor man's 86 sort of. Seems like 240sx guy's especially hate em. Oh each their own.
Also the gas crisis was completely fake. My dad never helped disposed of perfectly good gas in the San Diego Port back in the 70s.
Smoke em if u got em and
    Hire Ryan D Adams lol
