Any defense can be defeated. The best approach is to make it take too long or be too inconvenient for a thief. Layered defense is the way to go. A shift lever lock combined with a simple hidden kill switch wired into the fuel pump relay, for example.
Used one of these for years, on both my A reg Metro and B reg Vauxhall Nova. The Nova got nicked anyway, and turned up about 3 miles away. I think someone used it to get home from the pub, but no damage, so that was ok. I think the Autolok is still in the garage somewhere.

A friend of mine had one of those steering wheel locks on his car and he didn't have the key (long story) so without picking it I got it open in a few minutes. I reckon I could have gotten that over open too in no time at all without a key 😉. Not bad that they put a 5 pin lock in this device.
