  • New Version: • Row Echelon Form, Pivo...
The version has additional info on free and basic variables. Definition of echelon form is slightly different but more common.
This video explains row echelon form of a matrix, pivots, and how to determine the number of free variables in a matrix that represents a system of equations.

You did not tell us what the free variables are. That is the only reason I was watching this video!!

I would just recommend in this video that since you're talking about how to figure out the number of free variables, it would help to know how to identify which variables are free and to determine how to solve the equation with that information.

THANK GOODNESS. I'm so lost in my linear alg class right now. While the prof is already on Transformations, finding Ker(T) and Rng(T), I'm still struggling to figure out how to get dim[ker(T)] and dim[rng(T)]. Finally, after much googling, Khan academy, and your video, I'm starting to catch up. THANK YOU~

    Don't you mean that if q > p, there are q - p free variables, rather than p - q? If q is greater than p, then p - q would be a negative number.

    I have a question regarding your calculation of free variable: the following system: 1a + 4b + 3c = 0, -2a -1c = 0, 8b + 5c = 0, by your calculation has not free variable but in reality it does....

Everything is correct except for one thing. If there are more than zero free variables, it does not mean the system of equations has an infinite number of solutions. The system could have no solutions if any row is in the form [0, 0, 0, ..., 0, b] where b is nonzero because there is no way 0x1 + 0x2 + ... + 0xn = b. This is the existence and uniqueness theorem.
