    in my solution book,in some cases they use the same variable for two different free variables. for example x3=a and x4=a? why is this?

      Not too sure. x3 and x4 can be anything, but they don't necessarily have to be the same value.

    Thanks! This is extremely clear and helpful :)
    But what do I do if I'm given a polynomial with no free variables?
    Such as: -4x -3y +7z = -2?
    I'm supposed to find [xyz] +s[___] +t[___]
    Super confusing given all the steps I'm seeing online require free variables!

      🙃extremely late reply but to whom it might help your free variables (non pivot) will be y and z
