- One of the all time great country ballads written by the great Fred Rose and Mel Foree. This is from Marty's 1962 album 'Portrait of Marty'and Marty sings it absolutely beautifully. Also recorded by Ronnie Milsap, Roy Orbison, Frank Ifield, Narvel Felts, Jimmie Rodgers, Hank Snow, Don Gibson and Marty Jr. amongst others.

Marty Robbins was one of the most versatile singers of all times. He NEVER recorded a dud...not even ONE!
I loved Marty like a brother, he inspired me to start playing music many years ago
and I still attempt to play his music even today, he was a one and only and I am
positive Heaven is enjoying him as much as we do.
Marty was one of the few people who could sing an original Hank Williams song like this and make it REAL. Marty truly DID have one of the best voices in Country Music too!...and he was a great guy as well!
This song was first recorded by Roy Acuff & The Smoky Mountain Boys, not Hank.
When Marty Robbins sings of the old West, you can smell the sage brush and hear the whispering sands! that's the magic of a master balladeer.
Marty Robbins is classic. It is soooo much better than today's so called "country music"RIP Marty, and thank you Tarquin45
The thing with Marty Lamar, is that he made it sound so easy. He sang some very vocally demanding songs yet handled them with consummate ease. There were few (if any) in Pop or Country who could hold a candle to him.
I'm just trying in a small way to keep his memory alive and show some who didn't realize what an immense talent he was.
He also sang Hawaiian music in the native language.
What brilliant harmonies! No one does it this anymore.
Thank you for Sharing, such GREAT VOICES ,💖
What a great voice, Marty is legendary.
Absolutely beautiful harmony only he can do. Thank you so very much. That is talent and singing at its best.
His voice was divine 💖
Love his voice
love this song from marty nobody comes close to him at singing
Been a Marty fan for years. He was, and still is the very best.
Loved to listen to Marty, what a sense of humor he had and he is missed so much.
Marty put great emotion into every song he sang which made other singers attempts pale into insignificance. He also had the two best backing partners in Don Winters and Bobb Sykes that any singer could wish to have. The three of them and the band were pure magic.
Another tearjerker sung by the best singing them !!! Thanks Marty !!!!
sad this generation missed having true legends like MARTY.
It is so good to hear Marty Robins voice again.
They don't do it like they used to- music or vocals. Keep the oldies going!
I'm So Glad Marty Did Not Choose Pop Or Classical music,Think what we country music lovers would have missed
I wish I had words worthy of Marty. I don't ........
Bob Hart
Marty Robbins and Elvis Presley..... the two prettiest male voices ever. Jim Reeves is up there pretty close too.
And don't forget Roy Orbison.
Strange isn't but whenever this man sings a song you have heard countless times, it always sounds like the first time ever....How did he do that?
Zane Starr ... He seemed to sing with more emotion than most... ?
Ya, same with Gene Watson. Have you heard this one by Gene? They put a different spin on a song, didn't they?
Marty Robbins är (is) one of the best!
SINGING OR SPEAKING HE WAS SO DISTINCTIVE & UNFORGETTABLE...
simply stunning that's marty
He'll always be my idea of a
What a great singer should
Be. I like all his songs.
A Big Iron? I'll steal it! *NO ONE WILL EVER KNOW!!!!!*
He's great, Lolene was my favourite
I have loved Marty's music for years and have always been glad I got to see him at the Ryman in the late 60's, when he was at the peak of his career. It find it a damn shame that country music radio, even the ones who claim to play classic country, seldom play anything of his but El Paso. He left a great body of work and Willie and the boys in Texas should play more of Marty than they do; other stations should play him more instead of the crap they play. Thanks for the great video, Tarquin.
There aren't many modern singers who could put it over like the Oldies
what a sublime song by the one and only...marty robbins. one of the greatest voices God ever gave to a man. cheers Tarquin
Tarquin45 thank you for all the GREAT songs by Marty Robbins
Thankyou Sandi, it was my pleasure putting them on You tube.
There is no one that sings such beautiful songs
this man can sing!!!!
Truly a beautiful song with touching lyrics. Too bad it is seldom performed and almost forgotten today.
Can you just image the music and singing up in heaven from all the good C M music singers that left us way to soon. It must be heaven for sure.
He was as smooth as any singer i have ever listened to !!!!
I think this version of the song is undoubtedly the best version of it.
I would surely say that.
Late reply--I discovered this version about 10 years ago, and for all of the artists that have done it....Marty's version is the one that i find myself coming back to, for another listen. This version breaks my heart more than any other. Just perfect!
Yes was lucky to see Marty at the Cave Supper Club in Vancouver ...Sammi Smith and a young Gene Watson had great versions of this classic also ..
the two backup singers made his sound ... always with him over the years ... and also the guitar player that did such beautiful work on all the gunfighter songs ...
Some have commented that Marty only sounded great singing country, actually he sang across the whole spectrum of music except opera! Remember his great hit "A white sports coat" just to name one! I just thank God, his son is a chip off the old block and will carry on where the King left off!
I love Marty too, but in my opinion Johnny Cash is the king.
Listen to his Hawaiian songs and you'll get a feel for the incredible vocal range he had.
Great song from the master.....fab backing
Thanks Tarquin45 for these beautiful songs.
Thanks for taking the trouble to thank me Gayle, but the credit belongs to solely Marty Robbins.
Yes, but without people like you we would never hear these songs so thank YOU!
Great meaning in this song, sad things happen in all our lives... GREAT SONG... Thanks, tarquin45
This is the most beautiful song l ever hear
Rien Denbrok ... check out Gene Watson on this one, also.
More beautiful Harmony! I have been a big Marty Robbins fan since the 60's! Thanks!
Another Marty classic - thanks, again, Tarquin.

@ncompasscom
Thanks for such a moving comment. I feel proud asnd privileged to have posted so many of Marty's songs. I always think of it as kind of payback time in that he gave me so much pleasure through the years.
Absolutely beautiful. If I could have been a singer, I would have wanted to be like Marty! So versatile. Thanks!
On one of his appearances with Barbara Mandrel, he sings "Love Me" to her. It will put chill bumps on you!
Lamar
really beautiful love this song and marty thanks
brilliant love this song by marty love him
Yep, I heard it a year ago & it still sounds like this is the first time, the man had such a talent the sort we will never hear again.
He did a pretty good job with it. Distnctly Robbins sound.
The balance is so well reached and the musical complement slips into so smoothly into its real role.
Tim.

Tim.
Actually zaaritha Marty was the best. For all round talent, vocal ability, songwriting and charisma he was on a different level in my opinion.
Thanks for all your comments by the way.
Absolutely
The Statler Brothers sing this song also. They do a good job. DON Reid's voice is beautiful. I like Marty's also.
Thanks tarquin45: Nice song thank you!!
❤❤❤
Thanks very much tiggy.
I totally agree with your comment updike, apart that I don't regard him solely as a country singer. I think he is far better than many singers in the Pop field and it would have been interesting to see how his career would have panned out if he'd taken the Pop route instead of the country trail after Ray Conniff.
does anyone have a video of marty singing saddle tramo and she's just a drifter? if so, can you put them on here? these are two of my very favorite songs by marty.
If he had taken the pop route he would have ended up crap like many of the others-He knew what he was doing in the world of Country R I P Marty
Just heard this again....He is still great isn't he although he kinda spoils it for all the singers who have come since him, (or before him come to think of it).
No. Marty was never on the same record label as Don and Phil. They did I believe, appear together on a US TV show together and Don toured Britain with Marty in the 70's.
did he ever record anything with the everly brothers?
Excuses, excuses but hell it keeps right on a hurtin'
Care to dance....
2018?
Marty was from family of 9..were any other member of his family sining. The two men that you see with him.are they Marty's brothers
Great [try the Roy Orbison version]
ILL STEAL IT
Marty and Hank Snow are best at this, I accidentally sent on to Ray Price's version , no comparison, didn't like him singing it .
