Watch The Patriot (2000) Now: AAN.SonyPicture...
In 1776 South Carolina, widower and legendary war hero Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) finds himself thrust into the midst of the American Revolutionary War as he helplessly watches his family torn apart by the savage forces of the British Redcoats. Unable to remain silent, he recruits a band of reluctant volunteers, including his idealistic patriot son, Gabriel (Heath Ledger), to take up arms against the British. Fighting to protect his family's freedom and his country's independence, Martin discovers the pain of betrayal, the redemption of revenge and the passion of love.

Especially when in a deleted scene he specifically orders Tavington to wait until he gives Tavington the order to charge. If Tavington had lived after the battle, Cornwallis most likely would have had Tavington shot, maybe doing so personally.

Tarleton was much the same in real life, that is who Tavington is based off. Only they got the uniforms wrong in this movie for the British Legion Cavalry, they had green jackets with black facings like most Loyalist Regiments did. At least they got it right that this Regiment was made up of Loyalist Americans barring Tavington. Also Tarleton didn't burn down a church with people in it. No British General did that in the Revolutionary War but Mel Gibson had to include a Nazi war crime in the movie to add plot points.

As a bit of a history "buff" (?) this scene is completely historically accurate. I think we need to remember people can't look from above irregular terrain such as this; besides for hot air balloons (which have a bunch of issues on their own if you tried to use them on the battlefield), there isn't really any way to look above and beyond high and elevated terrain like this.
There's thousands of examples from the Early Modern period, before, and later, of armies successful pulling off stuff from minor tactical ambushes and hiding maneuvers (such as seen during Quatre Bras) to hiding *entire* forces behind these pieces of terrain (such as at Waterloo).
Besides, I doubt the scouts would've gotten far enough to see them in the first place. Enemy skirmishers would've stopped them and shadowed their maneuvers before they would've even gotten close to cresting the hill.

Volley fire was much much less lethal than that. Best troops could not withstand more than 20% losses without fleeing. The cavalry charge was perfectly timed as historically most losses were suffered by cavalry hunting down disorganized fleeing troops. Fun Fact: The Patriot Movement was British. Established in 1725 as a branch of the Whig Party. They later left the Whigs and later still changed their name to The Liberal Party and so still exist in parliament to this day. Patriots pushed for:- Civil Liberties, a fuller democracy and free enterprise. Although slavery had been stopped in England since the start of the 12th century, Patriots pushed for it to be abolished world wide. They also dreamed of spreading democracy around the world and to one day have a United Nations to end all wars. Their ideas led to riots in England and rebellion in America. My county of Yorkshire was Patriot and home to men like Rockingham and Effingham who would have American Cities, Counties and even Warships named for them. However they were very disappointed with the American Constitution that kept slavery and limited the vote to only the white property owning class or just 6% of the population. In 1782 the Patriots won here in England when Rockingham was invited to become Prime Minister. He agreed on the condition that he be allowed to set America free. One of the ironies of the conflict was that it ended with Britain moving towards the Patriot Left whilst America moved to the Tory Right.

Bad representation of many battles other than the guerilla warfare. Historically, the British infantry were way more lethal in volleys and usually charged the enemy lines immediately after a volley fire. Tavington had represented British cavalry commanders pretty with their central tactics being charge and be damned. I hate the scenes that British Grenadiers are losing in melee against Continental troops. British Grenadiers are the best in melee combat and bayonet charges, they're not gonna lose to Continental troops who aren't even well-fed and were mostly exhausted by marches.
