This was probably my epic hike of the summer, and I am so fortunate to have you to take me with you on so many beautiful trips to lakes and mountain tops! Thank you so much for the beautiful experiences!

I was reading an adolescent lit story that had Ypsilon Lake mentioned in it. The reference brought me eventually to your video. Excellent way to recreate your hikes. I look forward to watching more of your videos. thanks
Terrific photography! You brought back great memories, my son and I did the CCY in '13. Incidentally, I did neighboring Fairchild in 1968 and he did it in August 2018, exactly 50 years after me. Again great work, Nick.
Another great hike in RMNP, and you captured it very well! Again, you always have the luck in catching the wildlife in the right place at the right time. I hiked this trail about 6 years ago, and it is a beauty of a hike for sure. If you get a chance, see my question on your Mt. Toll video and let me know what you think. Hike on! ...joe
Hello Nick & Barb: What an awesome hike. We love the wide-open spaces when you hike up to Ypsilon. The views all along the hike are awesome. It doesn't look like you spend a lot of time in the woods before you get above tree line. Very beautiful views. Loved that little interlude with the Elks!! Ypsilon is definitely on our list but now with the fires (I read already several of the comments down below), we don't know if we are able to do it. We are flying in by this weekend and will see what is possible or not. In either case.. looking forward to being in Colorado and trying out some of your hikes. Can't wait to see you do a video of spectacle lakes, was oh so close a few years back but my cousin got a little spooked getting somewhat stuck on a slab and we didn't continue. Would be interested in seeing which route you would go up from Ypislon lake!
I tried Spectacle back in 2016 and trashed my knee on that slab you are talking about. I started sliding down and tried to wedge my foot in the crack and my leg was at a weird angle and my bad knee completely went out. I thought I did the ACL again. Talk about a long hike back.. so thats why I havent been too eager to try it again. Was set to do it last Sunday but smoke from fires forced us to switch to plan B. But I am going to get them this year for sure. I might go up the waterfall instead of the slab. I heard its a tad easier.
I was hiking flattop on Tuesday but couldn’t reach hallet due to altitude sickness. Super sad but I’ll have to come back and hike that mountain! Great content as usual man!
Cool. I also saw those elk, but a little lower down! Only it was before sunrise so my video was more grainy. They hadn't yet passed the trail so we were able to sneak by ahead of them.
That was EPIC! The views were amazing! You hit the jackpot on the wild life that day to!!! What was the temperature up there? I wasn't sure if you mom was cold or just protecting herself from the wind. Great video!
Thanks! It was a perfect day. I always see tons of wildlife up there. In my CCY vid I had the Pika on my shoe! Another reason to take the Valley Trail is because that is where all the elk are at. It wasnt too hot that I remember. If anything it gets a little chilly when you are up that high.
I was not the blind guy that you saw that day. But I hiked blind all over. With the poles to walk and everything. It is ... scary on parts like that. But not as scary as crossing a street and trusting society to not run me over. haha. I had surgery this past christmas and now I can see. So I'm going back, all over.
Did you guys look over to see the Spectacle lakes? Love those lakes!!! The fires are really making me sad! I hope they are nowhere near Snow lake and Mt Lulu!!! Im so jealous of you guys! Haven't been getting to go hiking for awhile, I'm still wanting to do Bluebird but I don't know! Have fun you guys and thank you so much for sharing!
We looked over and saw Spectacle. We were going to try it last Sunday but smoke was too thick. So we went to plan B. Sadly the fire is working its way to Lulu.. as of yesterday it looked like the fire was down through Box Canyon on Long Draw Rd right next to Trap Lake and just on other side of ridge to North of Iron Mtn. I have a feeling Iron Mtn is going to burn. Hopefully it stops there to SW. But then they are going to let it burn all the way to Pingree Park Rd. So many trails are going to be destroyed. Im really glad I did a lot of those Pingree hikes last year. My next video is a actually Iron Mtn.. by the time the video is done it could be destroyed.

Chiquita & Ypsilon are also interesting to climb from the Lawn Lake trailhead (but more work). I didn't know about the Rawah fire until you mention it below--nice map of impacted area here: inciweb.nwcg.gov/incident/map/6964/2/ Big burn but 85 years of fire suppression polices really did make a mess of the forests, with overgrowth stressing and killing the trees in mild and moderate droughts Hope they reopen the western side of RMNP for my next trip in a couple of weeks...
I recently tried Chapin from the E ridge.. got shredded in the bushwhack and didnt even come close. The thick smoke didnt help either. But I may try that Chiquita E ridge someday. It looks a little easier. Ypsilon may be a little too technical.
@@nicksangetta8874 Chiquita sounds much easier than Chapin (have never tried Chapin from that side because of how the bushwhack looked). For Chiquita, just turn off near Upper Chipmunk Lake and it is a long, generally mild ridge with excellent views. For Ypsilon peak, head up to Ypsilon lake and then go WNW. from there, it's just finding a good way up the south slopes--very steep but can be kept to class 2 as long as no snow (it's a bit like Meeker's south face). In both cases, the forest bushwhacks are not long and not bad at all.
Hello Nick,What does your mom carry in her backpack. How do you know what Mt you are looking at when they all look the same.Do you carry the same gear on every hike or do you switch up depending on the hike. Peace
Once you hike the mountain you get to know it intimately and can spot it from afar. Ive done almost all the mountains I name. I carry the same basic gear on all hikes. I only add the winter gear like heated gloves and microspikes when they are needed. Im not sure what my mom carries other than jackets and food.
Susan Bobzien Hi Susan! This is Nick’s mom. I carry my poles when not using them, a rain jacket, food, bug spray, gloves, hats.....and of course, lots of water! I just carry regular things that may be needed for a hike and add micro spikes for winter and extra buffs, etc. Thanks for asking!
Im safe, but that entire area to the north up by Long Draw and Rawah's is pretty much annihilated. Those views of the trees are some of the last you will see. Its all gone. My next video is really gonna be sad because where we were is about to burn.
@@nicksangetta8874 fire is absolutely necessary for North American mountainous ecosystems. unfortunately humans do are best to stop them with results of unhealthy amount of dead dry timber. burns may seem sad but nature is amazing with its recovery. do not be sad its a renewing. out of control burns are a result of stopping burns from happening. a good example was the Ute fire in Philmont Scout Ranch New Mexico. Were you a scout friend?

Wow. You also saw moose. Thankfully from a distance. They are as scary as grizzlies to me. Way more aggressive than elk if you get too close.
