Why don't people scrap the bowls out when making stuff, such a waste.

I lived through the 50’s and my mother used a small can of tomato paste, a little water diced sautéed onion and ground beef, sprinkle of chili powder to make spaghetti sauce. The cream fraiche I never saw but we did have sour cream that could be used. Olive oil wasn’t commonly used, my mother used Crisco which was a white shortening, and some farmers would use Lard which came from hog fat. My mom believed the television adds that said Crisco was better for you and she used margarine too. In fact I remember when I was real tiny they had a package of white soft soft that they squeezed a capsule full of yellow dye into it and smashed it around to make it look like butter but it wasn’t and I’m sure my mom bought it because it was cheaper than real butter. I never had real butter in my mother’s house.

Every recipe is varied and original, yeah, right.

Well ... I followed this recipe, and granted it's not the original, but it's very, very nice! Thank you!

This can’t possibly be the original recipe. Having lived through the 1950’s I know that the ingredients you use were not available- such as crème fraiche, tomato paste and olive oil.

Olive oil maybe not, the original recipe from the 1956 cookbook of Constance Spry says oil, but tomato puree and whipped cream were included. It was available at that time in the UK as in the rest of Europe, tomato puree could not have been a staple in your neighborhood at that time, but it was widely available in France for example. Cream, not available in the UK in the 1950's? Is that a joke?

@@als8368 yes they will used cream, but not “crème fraiche” which is a different product.

@@als8368 No not a joke ! Crème Fraiche was absolutely not in the shops in the early 1950’s! Perhaps in Fortnum and Masons but not in small towns and rural areas. Olive oil was sold in the chemists for ear care!

Can you make the dish with no red wine?

It seems you can make this with anything!
I have been seeking the perfect recipe all day in prep.for tomorrow--it doesn't exist!
It is a curried chicken salad, apparently. That can be made however you like it!
      Off I go!
Edit--I made the traditional version for yesterday (the poached chicken method was excellent!). And today, I am chopping everything into a curried chicken salad for sandwiches. A coconut curry, in fact!
I did find it was all very much to taste. Whether one wants more curry or spice, more sweet, more savory--it is very individual!

There had better not be any mango chutney or raisins in this, but we'll see
    Edit: There indeed wasn't!

This whole recipe is a disaster. Try anything else. All sorts of issues with it. No measurement of tom puree shown and then you'll slowly realize this is absurd.
