- The first part of this video shows Amira Willighagen receiving an invitation from André Rieu to attend a Master Class in singing at his studio in Maastricht.
The second part of the video is an extract of another young Dutch / Australian singer, Mirusia Louwerse, performing 'Ave Maria' with André Rieu down in Maastricht in 2008. This performance is a Master Class in its own right for all aspiring singers and is intended to motivate and inspire Amira to follow her dreams.

Amira's ease in handling interviews, comments, and questions from adults on camera is almost as impressive as her singing. She is a very intelligent girl.

Mirusia singing in this video was nothing less than perfection.
She was superb, but she commits the same offence I see from a lot of technically excellent, trained opera singers - it lacked feeling. It seemed like I was watching a "how to" masterclass in soprano vocals, but devoid of much in the way of emotion. I guess it's next to impossible to meld the two seemlessly, as you're going to be hung up on either being either technically superb, or infusing all your feeling into the rendition. I think also with, "Ave Maria" you'd really have to be a fervent believer to do it justice.
I think you have focus first on the words and the notes as she is performing professionally in front of a live audience and TV. She could get so wrapped up in feelings as she sings that she might lose track of where she is and then piss everyone off as they paid to see a performance and not some singer that stops singing to cry. Just my opinion.
Your comment is a bit disingenuous and sarcastically dramatic. No-one's expecting waterworks, but in this instance if you're going to sing a worshipful religious song (Ave Maria) then a performance professional should accept that it's not beyond the realms of expectation for the audience to expect some indicator of reverence in the performers voice, fitting to the material being performed. Otherwise, all you've got is a dry, technical recitation. You might as well be listening to a computer synthesiser with little, or no expressivity. That might be your sort of music, but it certainly isn't mine. Not everyone that listens to this stuff are are pretentious opera snobs.

Mirusia sings beautifully, but Amira's innocence and spontaneity gives her a special character. Just two different styles. One is a cultured voice; the other is an angel come to us.

Mirusia is from Australia but she is of Dutch descent. She has a Bachelors Degree in Performance in Classical Voice. She speaks Dutch fluently and her Aunt who lives in the Netherlands contacted Rieu and the rest is history. She is a lyric soprano.

I was out-of-country, for 10 years. I didn’t see combat but I saw some stuff. I don’t cry easily but I cannot listen to this amazing child without tears welling in me eyes. She is astounding and soon she will have Andre Rieu as a mentor. The world’s a stage and it will be hers.

Yes, she's a young girl with an amazing voice...But, it's her voice and her life!
It remains to be seen what she chooses to do as she grows into herself..She's being swept along with the tide of wonder, admiration and pressure that comes with the discovery of brilliance. It is wonderful to be able to partake of the beauty of her voice.. If she chooses to continue singing Opera, she'll get the vocal training and skills to project and protect her voice ....So we, (her admirers) can be happy hamsters for years to come... If she chooses not to sing professionally at some point.. I hope whatever she does she finds true happiness in her life.

The 'Ave Maria' has been added to Amira's repertoire for possible inclusion in one of her performances on Holland's Got Talent.

Amira sang the Bach-Gounod one in the HGT; It soars up to a B, and on the cd it is exquisite. This is Schubert, more prayer-like, and there is also a Caccini Ave Maria, again different in mood. This is beautifully sung by Marisa.
Antonpreis Thank you. This version of _Ave Maria_ was a suggestion to Amira's father as to what type of music would suit Amira's voice. However, I was personally more pleased by Amira's rendition of the Bach-Gounod version than I would have been had she sung this suggested Schubert version instead.
***** I agree, and I am sure most would feel the same, as it came out so well. I would personally love to hear her sing Laudate Dominum from Mozart Vespers, K321, I think or K339, not sure which, but it has the quiet choir underneath in part, and that lovely voice of hers rising above would be heavenly! Does she take requests? The Mozart she has sung suits her well, and they are the sort of items which would not damage her voice.
Antonpreis I went and looked up this song and listened to several versions of it and I agree it is very beautiful and would fit Amira's voice. If she would decide to do this I this the versions by Lucia Popp or Kiri te Kamawa would best suit her. I also agree that Mozart has several Arias that would suit her as well. But I think more than anything else Amira has her own likes and dislikes as far as the music goes. She is no different than one of her idols who if she didn't like it she wouldn't do it and I think you know I am talking about Maria Callas. I don't think that a possible suggestion to Amira would hurt but don't be disappointed if she didn't do it. Buy the way Mozart is a favorite of mine as well but for his orchestral pieces when I was playing he would put a challenge on you as a performer.
Gerald Weg Thanks for that- I agree that it is her choice, as it should be, but of course she will need suggestions from more experienced singers, and it is obvious from her cd, that she has an empathy with that type of song, as Pie Jesu and Ave Maria, so no harm in suggesting. My approach is as a singer, not player, but Mozart put a lot of feeling into his music, , (and wrote for just about every instrument), and that is one of the appeals of his work.Whatever, I shall wait patiently for Amira's next cd. Music is a wonderful thing...No matter the style...If the artist performing can make you feel what the song is about or what the artist is feeling...Then music has done its job...I am related to several renowned musicians/composers but I recieved none of their talents through genetics...save one...I can listen...This in and of itself is a skill...As I listened to this beautiful piece of music by this lady...I felt such a....(for lack of a better set of words) warm and fuzzy feeling way down deep...

I'm not sure I've ever heard a more perfect voice that never miss's a note like this performance. I'm not the biggest fan of soprano or high pitched voices but this is just beautiful by anyone's standards I would think.
Unlike the U.S. that has very little apprriciation for quality, class or real art and worships rapp trash and fools that scream as loud as they can....this is real art and music at it's highest level of talent. It actually takes WORK and effort to do this rather than yell like fools on a bus on the way to the basketball game and pass that off as talent with lyrics about killing cops and slamming woman's private parts.

+Denny Law you don't have to denigrate one to lift the other. Popular music is not your style, we get it. So, do us favor and don't listen to it. The US has done a marvelous job sourcing the world's entertainment for a time when it was much needed and appreciated, i might add. So please, hate the art but respect it for your own sake.

beenn15 No pal.....I love all types of music and respect most people doing it even if it isn't my style. What I dislike and have no respect for is not only the music but this rapp trash has become a way of life or lifestyle for many. We need more class and character and goodness in the world and not drive by shootings, drugs and burglary disguised as art. Not all people are like this iof course nor did I say they were, but a very high percentage I'm sorry to say and I see it in the court rooms everyday of my life. Thanks for being at least reasonable, if not nice (as that would be asking too much) to talk to to.
My preference is heavy rock, but I also have several classical CD's. Good music is good music, but it doesn't mean I like all rock or all classical. It would be so boring if we all liked the same things.

It's hard telling what Amira will sound like when she is Mirusia's age. A woman's voice does change a little as she grows from a girl to an adult. Not quite as much as a guy's voice does, but it does change. Training plays a role, too, so hopefully Amira will get the kind of training necessary to shape the raw talent that she's been given. A square of good clay is good, but it is truly beautiful when it is shaped and sculpted by a master artisan.
Thursday 19 December : Amira has a very bad cold and it is uncertain whether she will be well-enough to take part in the Semi-Final on Saturday.

Quite good that you gave her parents already this good advice. A child this age with that much wind and power can easily stress her voice too much. Frankly speaking I do hope that they follow this up and that they send their daughter to a classical teacher. There are some who could do the job.
