The Antonov An-22 is the world's largest turboprop aircraft and the world's first wide body transport aircraft. Some 68 examples of the An-22 were beuilt between 1965 and 1976 and today, in 2024, only three examples are believed to remain airworthy, all of them operated with Russia. So these aircraft are extremely difficult to see operational today, if not impossible. Back in the late 1980s, the An-22 made several special cargo flights to Amsterdam and local plane spotter Chris Mak filmed over 1 hour of amazing footage of this fabulous aircraft. The An-22 is an amazing airplane. It was actually designed by the Antonov Design Bureau in Soviet times, and built at the Antonov factory on the outskirts of Kiev.
