    Dave was and still is one of my drumming heroes since 40 years and to be honest, I would refuse to choose either number one or two since each of the solos represent the entire spectrum of Dave, the first incorporates a more traditional approach to Jazz while the second is Fusion oriented. No other drummer blends different genres with such an amount of dedication! Thank you Dave for the inspiration

    Weckl is my favorite soloist. And I’ve seen the best, including Neil Peart, Louie Belson , Ringo, and Buddy Rich. Dave Weckl’ drum solos are the most satisfying of all great soloists.

    I greatly prefer Solo 1, much smoother, almost effortless speed and control, probably shows the effect of his studies with Freddie Gruber later in Dave's career

    Outside of drummers / musicians who are in the know. Dave Weckl gets almost no recognition for being one of the very best at his craft easily on the short list. It's great to see this post giving him some very much-deserved accolades in this respect. He's one of those who is so good you forget that almost nobody else can do what he does much less as seamlessly as he does it.

    • @haypayne8937
      @haypayne8937 Před 2 měsíci

      Yep, he is damn good. At fusion jazz , salsa and samba. He can pretty much do everything. But he chooses to stay with that jazzy progressive, double stroke frenzy style.

    • @facelen4321
      @facelen4321 Před měsícem +1

      @@haypayne8937 he is not good at samba at all. He is one of the GOAT. But he plays afro-cuban and brazilian music with an american approach and accent. He is really good at fusion. Horacio El Negro Hernadez plays authentic and intricate amazing afro-cuban music. Check him out in 1992 Modern Drummer Fest. And Kiko Freitas is the brazilian master in samba and other brazilian rythms. Check anything he played with João Bosco.

    As great as Dave was, he's even better now! Here, the mature Dave is more subtle, nuanced, and swinging. The younger Dave, though amazing, seems to be going full out the whole time, louder, more brash. Again, obviously still amazing and I could only dream of being that good! But it's solo #1 for me.
    Happy Drumming everyone!!!

    I'm in full agreement.His independence exercising extremely extensively with around against the pulse of the hi hat with beautiful action packed drumming with the cow bell cymbals and all at his disposal was really exciting to watch him play as well as hear him with all the band just like this.Most excellent.Please😮 continue to do the awesome job of putting out top examples like Dave.He is in my books one of the top demonstration of high end jazz fusion serious drumming of all time in today's generation.Time keeper extraordinaire.Blessings to all.

    Hmmm. I'm surprised #2 was picked for this one, although I understand opinions are greatly informed by personal taste. I pick #1 for its structure, use of accents, and overall steadiness around the textures. As for attention to detail, I'm more surprise they think he expresses more attention to detail in the second solo. This solo also appears a bit rigid and tight to me. There's more breath, space and time spread out in the first solo. I think that more awakened the eccentric beauty of Weckl's drumming, what I like to call 'The Butterfly' of his stylistic display of rhythm.
    On another note (no pun intended), Weckl, like Colaiuta, is a beast. In the first solo, when they're trading 16's, there's a moment when Weckl channels the beat to just the ride cymbal and kick drum as sextuplets or sixteenth notes (I forget the exact subdivision; I didn't go back to listen to that part again). It's a very "Metal" moment, yet they're playing Jazz. This kind of sauce, or speaking more professionally, this use of orchestration, is one of the best there is about drumming.
    Let's give it up for Rhythm, the sun and moon; heartbeat, Dawn.

    #2 is the style of playing I like the most when it comes to Dave Weckl 🙏
    The second solo had way more tempo in it, it had way more punch in it, this is the way I like to hear to Dave Weckl playing the drums with my mouth wide open and my ears can’t get enough in hearing his drums, kind of… 🥴
    I play drums since 1993 at the age of 15. Today I still play here and there, but I‘m a hobby player. But I often try to play only tiny sections of his solos and I always fail miserably 😂 But I‘m not giving up 😄
    Thx for the video and all the best from Germany 🇩🇪, Philipp

    So, this is just my opinion...Looking at the modern guys and I consider everyone from 1950 and later modern, Dave is special for me. I can watch Vinnie and Virgil and Thomas and Chris and Tony W and Steve and Buddy and Max and Elvin basically anyone and I can understand and follow what they are doing. Some guys are just faster than me but I understand everything and can get close speed wise with the hands...But there is something different about Dave. Obviously he had amazing flow and dynamic control and his phrasing is unmatched but its not that....I think it may just be something as simple as his ghost notes and his straight to triplet to straight to triplet back and forth as he koves around the kit...it just has a flow and a style that I just sometimes am not sure exactly what he is doing...Its SO FREAKING AWESOMS to be able to see him play from b3hind the kit!! Anyway, I have a love and respect for a lot of guys but Dave is special and stands out even withing those circles...

    My favourite is 1. I love solos in which crashes, splashes and ride aren't used because I love the sound of drums. In number 1 solo I can see a mature artist who takes technic at service of music, I can feel pauses that brings breathe to solo and I feel like drums sing. The second one is super too but it's too technical according to my personal tastes and too much technic demonstration can risk to make loose musicality. Love both but my favourite is 1, more musical and meditative

    wrong conclusion! #2 the younger Dave is more trained and precise with fixed phrases, but the old #1, like any capricorn, is more routine and plays more freely, creates in the moment and is more musical especially in the background sound (ghost).
