One of the coolest musicians of all time. Mr Dave Weckl. ❤
It is so cool, that he evolving constantly. My first ever drum video school was his "Back to basics" and "The next step". And even he was one of the tops he changed his technique so much! And was like "Ok, that was a mistake, now I do it like this". And few years later "Ok, I was wrong again, that's how i do it now". That make so much sence, that all our techniques and methods are fluid and changing over time, and if something is not working anymore - do not be afraid to change it. Thank's Dave!
Same experience here!! It’s what drove me to keep going ever since I checked out the VHS tape from the university library in 1996-1998 (I think that was the time period).
Back to basics is invaluable school! I constantly going back to it because everything in it so true and purposeful.
Our master always practice and found new technique, i agreed with you, and i realized that he change the technique on the next step lesson, thats the signs that he always practice and practice,,thanks master dave...🙏🙏🙏
I add Todd and Simon as well. They live to play as I do. Im not a professional but love to play and learn.
One of the greatest drummer musicians of all time.
Not "The Greatest Ever"?
@@administration8961 nope; because that is 100% subjective
Nope. Art Blakey. Gene Krupa. Buddy Rich. Steve Gadd. Alex Acuna. You must've only ever listened to Dave Weckl. Broaden your horizons
@@administration8961 One of in light of the fact that there is no greatest since no single drummer has it over on all others in every aspect of drumming. No one is a better Vinnie than Vinnie, just as no one is better at being Buddy than Buddy. Who can do what Virgil Donati does better than Virgil? Chris Coleman? And so on down the line. We must give credit where credit is due. Peace...
@@Smittyschannel Not really, buddy. He is factually "one" of the greatest. Had I said "THE" greatest, then that specificity relegates the statement to subjectivity, but the generality of the statement and the fact that he is technically more proficient than most who have ever lived makes it a factual reality. He's on many of the top drummers of all-time lists to boot. We can factually state that some athletes are bigger, stronger, faster, etc than others. The same applies to music and drumming. Not many can come close to what Dave does. Actual drummers know this fact. I'm a huge Neil Peart fan and even I had to explain to a friend one day why Neil wasn't even close to Weckl in ability. He just wouldn't believe me until I posted the Sabian cymbal ad that Weckl, Peart, Portnoy and Bozzio did together where Neil literally thanked Dave for giving them all a lesson after each had played and Weckl had just finished playing. Bozzio was dumbstruck and told Weckl that it was hard to even focus on the cymbals because of how amazing Dave played. There are levels to every game. Weckl is cream of the crop.
Number ONE absolutely......a real Dream...!!!
Weckl! The inspiration, the guru!
Weckl 2024 🇺🇸
This dude right here has been a drum hero of mine for over 40 years... This is the first time I've ever heard him talk. Much different than I imagine 🙂
Oh my goodness, just tapping while talking, Weckl's sound is magnificent.
Dave and Vinnie are the drummers I admire the most. I wish Vinnie would have gone the path of the educator as Dave did. I've learned so much from Dave, his educational material has been invaluable. Having had some instructional videos from Vinnie as well would have been so incredible.
The majority of people arnt good teachers.
Vinnie comes across really shy and awkward on camera. On stage he's an animal but it seems he's not comfortable speaking on camera like Dave..Maybe I'm wrong 🤔
We have to be realistic in that what Dave and Vinnie can do on drums most people who ever lived will never be able to accomplish. We know that over and above practice and learning is inborn ability and genius. It's a sight to behold watching these guys play.
Vinnie's a weird motherfucker. I'll just leave it at that.
@@BaconIsNotBiceps these two titans have busted their asses for years at this instrument. Something to admire
Dave "The Touch" Weckl 🔥 Thanks for video, is a pleasure watch him Drumming and hear his suggest 🔥 Master at Work 💯
Very simple and touching, Dave Weckl is on my top list of greatest drummers in my book
Dave is one of the greatest drummers to walk this earth!! I had the privilege of meeting him and actually hanging out for 15-20 minutes with him... IMAC Theater Long Island NY After he and Steve Smith had put on a Clinic.. Steve went first Dave Finished and after the show he was standing in the lobby by himself waiting for a ride.. My wife and I walked up and it was just US!! We talked for about 20 min.. just regular conversation! OK I did ask him to sign my tickets which he very graciously did... Just a Super nice guy!! and a Living legend!!
I’m the guy who shouted “hurt me Dave!” When you came to salt lake in 1997 or so, and opened your clinic with a solo - and you went to a heavy rock 2/4 and laid down the law!! So cool !! Thanks Dave!!
Dave was a human computer kind of drummer in the 80 's but we loved it
I bought French toast and Step it by Bill Connors when they came out on LP
His playing got much more human and warmer in the last decades
What a fabulous technique he's got. Good advice about starting to make it melodic/musical...
Dave es y será siempre uno de los mejores baterías del mundo.
Those sticks are some of my favorites
wow!! That's great, teacher Dave Weckl, I always watch your videos. Greetings from Lima -Peru
He´s simply so damn good!
Hope it payed off in DOLLARS and CENTS, otherwise it's a very selfish endeavor!
This guy is an elite drummer and there really is no higher level of musician. Whatever he says I'd take his advice
It's always great to see my inspiration even in grey always in the pocket.
Happy to be a vicfirth / Dave fan
Vic Firth and Dave weckl are the best🔥🔥🙏🏻😁

wow! it's so good to see you Dave teaching drum technic in youtube God bless you Sir!
How smooth, now i realized back to basic is the key...thanks master dave...🙏🙏🙏🙏
THANKS ! Good way to get control.
Excelente lección...
Some good tips. Thanks
Yes the way Dave plays is the right way to play all around traditionally. From his style down to holding the stix. To. His dynamics. And clean ness and speed . It doesn t get much better than this. Jus ask. Buddy rich
The absolute best! Thanks Vic Firth! Subbed & upped
In my mind, when I'm listening I still see the guy from the Buddy Rich Memorial Concert...
I was 13 when that went down.
I look at the screen and then the mirror...
My only wish is that thr up and coming generation gets as much out of this drumming experience as I did. I hope you're inspired by your heroes like I am by Dave and the like.
Dddave Weckl. Speechless.
great teaching on warmups from a great drummer
Beautiful traditional technique
As a drummer on and off since 1962. But really getting and giving my total attention since 2015.
Nice Dave. Great fundamentals, emphasizing the fulcrum in the right hand between the middle finger and the thumb, Murry Spivak corrected me on that back in the 80s. And it took a really long time to start hearing it main stream, for some reason everybody thought it was first finger and thumb. Excellent warm up ideas, Tanks
Good seeing this
Thank you for sharing this with us
Always recognized the fluid distinction of Mr. Weckle's musical techniques.
From the early 1990s from my college jazz band years.

The Master🔥
True gentleman.
Right! He really does! Great comment
back to the future, nice!
Oh my god, making that pad talk, thank you so much Mr Weckl
Excelente!
Ver o Dave aplicando técnica (aí o nível musical é admiravel de ouvir e ver)
Great pad advice!!
Amazing!!! me too simples, dobles and paradilldles! 🥁🥁
Love me some Dave Weckl and Vic Firth sticks! Factory right up the road from me in Maine! Gonna visit someday. Thanks Dave for this, gotta keep the chops choppin no mattah what age! (Btw still got my Burning for buddy VHS tapes! Haaa!)
His left hand is almost halfway up that left stick. Pretty much the total opposite of what he was doing in the 80' and early 90's.
For real! Using more bounce now and when shown side by side, right hand and left are actually gripping at the same point on the stick (I.e., the flag on VF)
Good Sir
Oh yes !
Poxa velho agora sim chegou quem faltava mestre Dave 🙏🙏 nos ensina alguns de seus grooves latin mestre
NICE
My observation is that it is quite easy to find the balance point with (new) Vic-Firth sticks: Grab the stick where the American flag is printed.
On Dave's signature stick, the point is clearly further to the front than on the Steve Gadd signature stick. And in fact, Dave Gadd grips his sticks farther back, so the stick almost ends up with the heel of his hand. For me, that's important when playing in a suit. If the stick is too far back when playing, you can easily get caught in the sleeve, with matched grip even left and right!
“keep the sticks at relative same height”. Master, you are keeping them at EXACTLY the same height! Master of his craft!
I met him in 94. With chick coreaa acoustic band. We talked back stage for a while after the show. I've been playing. 50 years myself now. Dave probably. The same
Thank you for sharing this. As to Jazz. I really enjoyed Dave's drum style; especially that first track he played on Back to Basics & the one little thing that he said that my alter ego's mind took too far!? Hmm...
Great tip at 2:45 !!
Since 20 years ago, Dave has included the same three strokes on the drum/pad as a comma during demonstration(insert three strokes) to this day.
Vic Firth _himself_ asked Dave about his warmups. Let that sink in.
Cool
The simplest rudiments are often the hardest to play well. Some great advice here and anyone who has ever had a drum teacher will have practiced in front of a mirror. It was such a teacher who turned me onto Dave as I already knew Vinnie from Joe’s Garage etc and Steve Gadd from Fifty Ways but Dave had passed me by until I was given a copy of Dave playing with Chick Corea. Needless to say it did not disappoint.
I used to play his songs on Drum Mania arcade game decades ago. So crazy to see his face finally
The greatest drummer of all time.
I wouldn’t say any particular drummer was the greatest, there are probably half a dozen others who i would list as truly great drummers. DW is exceptional, no doubt about it.
One of the greatest of all time perhaps?! But the greatest?!….. now that’s a bit of a stretch! There are no greatest. There are no “bests”. Everyone is different everyone brings something different to the table. If you want to talk “GOAT”that would be Buddy!
My never to be humble opinion!
This man comes at a close second to Buddy Rich in the "Great drummers of all time" category. My personal opinion but I highly doubt my mind can be changed about that. This man was and still is incredibly inspirational to who I am as a drummer (and I'm 27 and have been drumming since I was 7, so 20 years), and every time I watch him be it live or on CZcams, it's always mind blowing to see what this man does. He and Dennis Chambers were my two favourite drummers when I was growing up.
Nice..
Great hands....
Fantastic chops
Traditional grip way it should be..
Dave Van Weckl
I've been doing this warmup for years all the while thinking to myself I'm such a noob for it. Never thought I'd see one of the GOATs does the actually doing the same warmup I do 😅
❤
I know this is kind of irrelevant but Dave Weckl looks amazing for 65
Hi Dave, dig how you play at the center of the surface... Kevin
este toca bien
