Are you keeping the free version of Resolve or are you going to upgrade?
just now bought it after one month of freee version use
That 10 bit color got me to upgrade when I got the Nikon Z6
I don't really NEED any of the tools in the paid version, but I'm SO impressed with the free version, I might pay just because it's so amazing I feel guilty for using it for free.
Still using the free version, but Adobe is starting to get way too cumbersome on my laptop. Also, I don't like the continually increasing subscription price; I don't need all that comes with CC.
free
if i need studio version i will crack it
LOL
paying one lifetime payment is still better than monthly subscription with adobe lol
Lone Walker exactly. I don’t mind spending an exhorberent amount on a software when it’s for work. Having my credit card dinged like clockwork every month not really. Especially that’s not how freelancers get paid. So it doesn’t suit with my cash low.
Toon Boom gives you the option to pay outright or rent the software. Which is best of both worlds. I can see how for some renting software is better, but personally the less I can avoid of this type of stuff by buying things outright, the better.
@@sloppynyuszi that's how I feel about Adobe Cloud. I recently found out that millions of people pirate After Effects, Premiere, etc. If they don't want people pirating the software then stop doing the monthly subscription.
@Walden DaVinci Resolve is definitely not easier to use than premiere
Me too. But getting there
does anybody have issues with bad audio render quality? i cant get mp4 to sound good for some reason. the interface gets pixelated frequently too

the free version is absolutely enough for my work.
Ayyyy Thanks for helping get to know the Software! I just downloaded it in hopes of making resetupes and originals. Props to you for
Thanks for the link in the description! I immediately upgraded to the Studio version because of the full GPU support, the removal tool and the noise reduction tool. I think it's worth the money. The Ignite plugins were taken over into Resolve. But they are slow, work better in HitFilm. Maybe there is still a lack of attitude on my part?
Glad it helped
The main problem for me is the fact that I use a lot of video effects. I’m a Premiere Pro user, I just switched over to try Resolve, the free version. I found it easy to learn very quickly because it looks kind of similar to Premiere. However, most of the video effects I need are only available with the studio version. This is enough for me to upgrade. I need a lot of effects for the video work I do, stuff like film grain, lens distortion, analog distortion, and so on. If it is only one payment and I don’t need to pay monthly or annually, I’m sold!
Yes it is only one payment so there you go.
Thank you, that was really helpful, I've been using the free version for a year now and love it but I'll be upgrading to the studio soon to overcome some of the limitations such as object tool removal and take advantage of their other dope features ... thanks again
Is speed ramping there in the free version??????
Thank you so much! I'm just getting into film making and this video was very helpful.
Thanks for making this video. It's very informative for a 5 minute video. Cheers
You're welcome. I'm glad it helped.
wow thank you so much. no joke it is now so much easier and u explained it really good.
I'm surprised you didn't mention GPU. The free version of Resolve does not use the GPU. Only the paid version of Resolve does. That is easily the biggest difference between the two.
I thought about putting it in but I thought most people would be more interested in what features are in the free version vs paid. But you made a good point.
I am really sad reading this... I am looking to build an editing rig so now I need to add a 300$US cost to all of that... :'(
I'm a noob when it comes to video editing, what difference does this make? I use DR16 free version and upload 1440p videos just fine after recording gameplay. Just wondering what the difference is when using the gpu
@@JPostman425 mostly time needed when encoding and when using software it should be smoother with GPU helps. GPU should be faster to export the project. However, i'm still using free version now and if it takes too long, I encode during my sleep so no big deal for now, at least
@@jasonbullockfilms is that even true? I understood only studio could use *multiple* gpus
Nice and short. Good video my dude thank you very much!
Does the free version have "Vocal Channel" plugin?
Great Video! Keep up the great content. Love it
Thanks so much!
@@jasonbullockfilms I just started CZcams and I still haven't figured out which editing program I should use.
Deinterlace is important for me so that alone was almost worth the price. And when I have the dongle i can use Fusion studio 16 too.
Nice! I didn't even think about deinterlacing.
You can only deinterlace footage in the paid version?
I've seen that has actually explained it to in a concise way!
Neat's noise reduction DOES work with the free version.
your videos are sooo great i love it
the 10-bit alone is huge. thanks.
It's a really good one for me!!! Thanks ,
You're welcome.

I currently use Final Cut Pro X and I'm tired of being stuck with one format and not being capable of sharing it with PC, which I switch between because I'm having a problem loading it onto CZcams over 15 minutes. I'm looking for a bare-bone, very specific, video that will tell me the difference if I need Fusion or if I can just use resolve alone. Do you have 1?
Hi Jason,
Have you tried to export a video of 52 minutes long in the free Davinci
Resolve 16? I had a problem with exporting the video. In the Rendering
setting, the " Add to Render Queue" was not turned into white, so I was
stuck there and not be able to proceed to the "Start Render". Do you
have any idea or advise how to fix that problem? I need to get this project done for my family. Thank you!
You got a like, a subscriber and a buzzer on from an old guy. TNice tutorials is the best soft soft tutorial I've seen so far. You covered a lot of
Hi, thanks for your video. I'm considering upgrading to Davinci Resolve Studio. I am a beginner and have now used DR Free for 5 months.
I mainly edit content filmed with Gopro7 and DJI Mavic 2 Pro. I have recently filmed with Mavic 2 Pro in 4k H.265 10-bit Dlog-M color profile and it is easy to edit in DR Free. But see that DR does not charge gpu and uses cpu instead. Is it right that the Studio version will use gpu for playback and rendering and thus increase the pace of editing? I am editing on a portable ASUS Zephyrus S GX701GX 17.3 "FHD
144Hz, Geforce RTX2080 8GB, Core i7-8750H, 16GB RAM, 1TB PCIe SSD. Do I get better performance by upgrading to DR Studio?
Hello good video ! Thanks! One question if I buy the Studio version 16 in the future I'll have to paye again to upgrade to Studio 17?
No. Once you buy the Studio version, all future updates are free.
I really miss Premieres Output to full screen on second screen while being able to watch the time line progress. Having an ASUS GL702VSK with i7 7700HQ CPU 12 gigs RAM a 1TB HDD 500 gig M.2 PCIe SSD GTX 1070 w/GDDR5@8Gigs GPU. will this effectively run Studio 16.2.x?
I don't yet do a lot (any) fancy color grading or other things. I pretty much lay my clips on the time line in the order they were shot , trim them, add a couple transitions (Cuts, Dissolves or fades) and a few titles and credits. Slap some music under the whole time line Render and Publish to you tube. 99% of my stuff is R/C TOY model airplanes. No need too alter the audio except to add a AUDIO PAN to enhance the low pass down the runway.
Super cool! Does Davinci take a lot to run? I tried Premiere, but I'm gonna need a new computer before I can use that.
Get a good GPU. Resolve loves the GPU.
@@jasonbullockfilms what's a GPU? 😮
Your graphics card.
@@jasonbullockfilms ooh! 👍

How can one not know what a GPU is
Thank you for that video. At least I've recognized the Version 16.1.1 does activates some tools for the free version. I gonna upgrade as far as I can afford my gear. I'm currently also working with blender, I can add Motion Blur within that as well. :)
thanks for the vid.
I can't seem to use the dynamic zoom on an image. It grayed out.
I also tried doing it via keyframes but same thing
These things seem so basic
So, will the FREE version allow me to add slow motion. Just bought a GoPro. Example would be if I had a video riding a mini bike and it crashes, can I slow it down to see the crash in slow motion.
Nice Video. I am willing to buy Davinci Resolve Studio, however, I was wondering whether I should buy the dongle or activation card as I prefer having an activation card but heard that the dongle also gives you access to Fusion Studio. I am only using Resolve on my home PC. Can you please help me out? Thanks
Since you asked: I am planning to purchase Resolve studio primarily (at least right now) so that I can utilize its neural engine slow motion interpolation (the "Speed Warp" setting). I need it to slow down videogame footage that's locked to 30 fps (so a higher rate source is impossible). I tested a lot of options, including Twixtor, and liked Resolve's Speed Warp best for this.
straight to the point, thank you
So it's a year later and the link still takes you to the DaVinci Resolve 15 document. Did they never release an update or have you just not uploaded the updated copy like you said you would?
I read in several places that free version supports one video card CUDA processing, and that you only need paid version to use more than one video card. Is that correct?

"Import/timeline" 2 questions whats the export/render max resolution? and question 2 can you see the difference on your timeline on you monitor?
This was helpful! Thanks! 👍🏼👍🏼
You took the words right outta my mouth.
Why do you have not that many subs? Your setup deserves more. Lol
Thank you for the kind words.
does Resolve had as many plugs as final cut x? or is it very limited? eg can I apply LUTs and colour corrections like final cut or is that only in the paid version of Resolve?
Resolve is the master of color grading apps. You can apply or design your own LUTs even in the free version.
As far as VFX plugins like for After Effects, it's limited in that regard.
I would comfortably state that most would benefit from the Speed Editor, the editing device that comes free now with studio purchase.
3rd party plug-ins work, I have Neat Video
my cam i use doesnt lighten the room up. is there a way in the free version to lighten the video or do i need the paid version?? thanks and great video
You can do this in the free version. If your image is too dark, just go to the Color tab and brighten it up. Be careful though. Unless you are shooting something REALLY high quality like RAW, you can only brighten up an image so much until the image begins to fall apart.
Did you forgot to mention about GPU acceleration? I think I saw another video, where they mention GPU support is only for the Studio version?
I think this is a massive confusion in the community, multi-GPU is Studio-only, free version is limited to a single card but it does make use of it.
On Linux Davinci resolv 16 does not handle h264/265 hevc and aac audio - so translation using ffmpeg kan solve this to make dnxhd or proress files that work.
So it does not handle video from cams like canon 60D etc. GoPro Hero 7 black and more but other solutions is free like Olive ,kdenlive anyway it DR16
is running nice on my computer with i7 and nvdia ctx 1660 graphics driver and ubunto Linux 18.04 also. Anyway I may buy DR as solution on my Linux.
Really like the multicam sync with audio - edit solution.
Oi does the free version have a watermark? I might have missed when you said if it did or not
So far Freee has done all I needed, but I am on win 8 and need HEVC to use the GoPro Hero 7 4K 60 footage, seems like I have to buy it and upgrade to windows 10 to do this, but some wrote I have to upgrade to Resolve Studio. Is this true?
Can I use gpu acceleration for rendering and exporting in the free version?
a little question for all the pro editors: where do i get "more" effects and things like that? I always wondered because I work as a editor for about 6 months now and only found some homepages where you could buy certain effects or intros & stuff like that. Thanks in advance for your answers !
Sadly, Resolve has little to none 3rd party add-ons and templates compared to Pr and Ae. And the ones there are are pretty basic. If you plan to main Resolve and Fusion, you better get ready to put in hours and a lot of patience to learn just the basics of how to create your own effects, transitions, etc.
If money is not an issue for you and if you plan to buy the full version. Then invest in plugins like BorisFX Continuum 2020, Boris Sapphire and Red Giant's Universe/Magic Bullet Suit and you'll have a lot to work with.
P.S. Keep in mind that some plugins or specific effects won't work within the Fusion tab in Resolve.
perfect explanation! thank you a lot!
No problem
Thanks for the info!
But the 10bit part, is not entirely true, I shot 4K 10bit HEVC 420 with Fujifilm X-T3 internally, or externally 4K 10bit ProRes 422 with the Atomos Ninja V, works perfectly fine in DaVinci Resolve 15 free version.
I guess the 10bit problem probably was the codec of the GH5.
From what I been seeing you can use 10bit by converting to Prores or the Avid codec using ffmpeg.
@@Being_Joe you can't import HEVC in a MOV container. I bet that is the problem. At least you can't on Linux, even in the Studio version. You can with an MP4 container though.
Same issue with a7siii. ProresHQ works but when importing xavc it does they same thing as importing ProRes raw....just an audio track. I am able to do xavc from the original A7S downscaled to 1080. I didn't try that with the a7siii as I wasn't forced to. The original A7S does 4K with ninja V. Resolve says the container is 10 bit but we all know it's only 8. Still 4:2:2 though.
I'm retired and have to watch my hobbyist budget. I can afford Pro, but don't think I can afford the hardware it needs to perform well. Enjoyed the show.
does the paid version more smoother? because im verry laggy in da vinci free version and i use gtx 1050ti 4gb and i7 8th gen
This is a good video for a year old information! Make sure to put the Davinci Resolve Version so that us future viewers (Post Corona Pips) would know if this is worth watching. I think you're using a Davinci Resolve 15?
Now 16
Thanks bro !!!
I have used the free version. I have been using Sony Vegas Pro (I know I don't think to many people still use it) but I've used that for like 7 years.. I'm waiting to go full-time with Davinci once I build my new PC which won't be until later this year I hope. After that I will go with the paid version plus ad-in more plug ins I'm noticing especially with Sony even the pro version still doesn't have enough plug ins for editing.
Invest in Continuum and Sapphire from BorisFX and Universe and Magic Bullet Suite from Red Giant. Keep in mind that some effects won't work withing the Fusion tab in Resolve. I think as Resolve gets more used by people, there will be more templates and plugins available.
Under the free version it covers speed ramping and masking? Just learning the ropes in vid. editing. Thank you!
Yes it does. I use that a lot on the free version.
I have finally reached a limitation when I wanted to try 3D camera tracking :'( Now I don't know if I should invest in the full or just do after effects... what should I do... I want to try virtual effects...
I should upgrade to studio. after effects will cost you 712 euros (yearly)
You can do 3D camera tracking for free in Blender if that's an option you'd like to investigate
Kill Zentral thanks for the heads up
after effects is industry standard, and it's only $20/mo
After effects is better because of plugins
In your opinion what is a good free beginners video editing software for 1080P CZcams videos? iMovie or da Vinci resolve 16? I just purchased a MacBook Pro 15-Inch "Core i7" 2.3 Mid-2012
For the absolute beginner, iMovie. But Resolve has more flexibility.
Jason Bullock Thank you so much!

I am using the free version but I see that my encoding performance is kinda less than what I expect with GPU using quite low. I see that in the pdf that it says "H.264 accelerated encoding with hi-spec NVIDIA GPUs" , but I have a AMD vega64. The document doesn't say anything about AMD GPUs and about encoding acceleration with them. So before I shell out $300 I want to know if anyone knows the answer.... Do I get a encoding (H.264) speed bump with AMD GPU if I upgrade?
Does the free version have speed ramp to speed up the clips and slow motion to slow down footage? Thank you
yes
I have a question if you mind, Can I share the davinci key to 2 different laptop and using the studio version at the same time ?

As far as I know, you can install Resolve on two machines with one license.

Thanks Jaison, second time I watched this video. You forgot to mention GPU accleration while rendering option is available only in paid version i guess.
why is mp4 audio render quality so bad? and why does the screen pixelates like it freezes or something?
(PLEASE RESPOND) Once you buy DaVinci resolve studio, do you only get updates for 1 year? Because I bought hitfilm pro last year with a 1 year license and you have to buy the software full price after the license expires. (I don’t want to pay +$300
Annually for updates, )
Once you buy the Studio version of Resolve, you get every update for free.

just as an amateur here. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge. What about deinterlacing?. Using the free DR 15 I get a final result with a comb noise I am not capable to get away. On the Clip Properties i tried to turn on interlace but ask the upgrade. May be wrong with the setting up anyway. Not sure it is worth paid upgrade as a hobbist making videos for my daughter.
According to Blackmagic, deinterlacing is something that is only for the paid Studio version. I would look into Hitfilm and see if their free version allows for deinterlacing.

Please don't get me wrong. Excellent content of the video. Just one advice. Try to sound prove or sound treatment your room. I can hear bear walls and its not pleasant. Or you can Edit your audio like you do with the video. Compressor and boost some frequencies. EQ etc. All the best. Thank you for the video.
I don't mind getting a paid version as Black Magic is investing in technology to help film makers around the world.
Especially at such a low price point.
I am really curious what the updates will bring in the future.
Me too. Resolve is definitely trying to cut in the Adobe market so they need to bring their A game.
My like tipped you paste that dreaded 911. Lol. So you ask what features? I’ve used adobe suite since CS5, and the company I work for are huge users of AfterEffects, Premiere Pro, Audition etc paying for around 10 licenses.
Does the paid version kinda merge 2 programs into 1 such as PP &AE? Adobe is getting slower and crashes more and more these days and you mentioned some tools in resolve that are in AE.
Tools most interested in is stabilization, camera tracking, content aware fill (this feels like it’s still in production for AE) masking, etc.
If not, do you feel in the future... it could be?
Great video btw and thanks for making it :0)
Yes but the learning curve of Fusion can be difficult since it's node based instead of layer based like After Effects.
oh snap... I take that back.. I started fumbling with some buttons and it's activated. Sorry I just started with this thing. The manual doesn't have enough pics it just gives you the names of buttons, etc
Glad I could help. 🤣🤣🤣
Great video thanks. I think for me it would need to be the paid version because I want to edit in 4k.
I got the cracked version, so I paid none
This video explicitly said that 4K is supported in the free version, 8K isn't though but I've a hard time figuring a situation where you have a setup to shoot and edit 8K and 300$ is a problem for you...
Bottom line... Premiere Pro-$255/yr Da Vinci Resolve-$299/one time (for now). It's a no brainer.
If you make a living off of using ADOBE's app, money shouldn't be an issue, you charge the monthly fee within a project price. That being said and as a user of both programs, I got to say that ADOBE should create a new program where Ae/Pr/Au work together. Even MAGIX released something like that.
Is it some sort of monthly fee or is it a one and done type of thing
