How to pitch a tunnel tent - Fjällräven Abisko Lite 2 review

- The Fjällräven Abisko Lite 2 is one of those tents that I think will stick with me for a very long time, it has so many use cases, it's versatile, lightweight but still roomy enough for 2 people. Let me know what you guys think of this tent and if you have any feedback!
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Compact and stable tent for trekkers who prefer to travel with light backpacks. The tent height is somewhat lower and the vestibule smaller, all to keep weight down. Perfect as a compact and lightweight trekking tent in the warmer months of the year, but also suitable for winter use in all but the most exposed conditions. The flysheet is made from Fjällräven’s new high-performance TripleRip nylon and has an innovative construction that combines two different fabric weights - 20 denier in the top part and 40 denier at the bottom where abrasion against the ground is most intensive - giving excellent strength while keeping weight down. The flysheet and inner tent are connected so the inner tent is kept dry while pitching. Simple handling with two colour-coded poles, generous pole sleeves with low friction and easily adjusted fox feet. It is also possible to use double tent poles (an accessory) if using the tent in exposed conditions. Six guylines in Dyneema with one-hand adjustments and reflective thread woven in. Excellent ventilation with large, highly positioned vents. In warm conditions the flysheet can be rolled up at both ends to increase the view and give fantastic airflow. If the weather is warm but unpredictable the door can be fastened at half-open position - the zipper has an auto-lock feature so it won’t “creep” in the wind. All openings are covered by a fine mesh that stops even the smallest, barely visible insects from getting in. Clothesline plus mesh pockets in the inner tent make it easy to dry gear and keep organised. Attachment points for Gear Loft (an accessory) in the inner tent. Just like all of Fjällräven’s tents, Abisko Lite 2 is made entirely without PVC plastic and toxic flame retardants, and its impregnation is fluorocarbon free.

I have both Abisko Lite 2 and 1. I tend to use the 2 just for one person as I like the space and the weight isn't that much different to the 1. Such a fantastic tent.

Nice review! I just bought the same tent (in blue, though, because looks matter). Just wanted to give a little tip about the stakes: The V-shaped stakes are supposed to be used with the tip of the V towards the tent. That way they are stronger and the little notch on the top of the stake can hold the guy line so it doesn't slide off. You seemed to put yours in the other way around.

That's a great tip! It makes sense when you think about it, too. I've had the tent for a couple of years, and placed the stakes just randomly. The V-shape holds pretty well in the wrong direction, as well :)

Just yesterday I pitched it when there was no wind (yet). In the night wind and rain started blowing hard into thee side of the tent, resulting in the condensation from the outer sticking to the inner. So important to pitch it correctly according to the direction of the wind, I definitely second that.

Hello sir, you asked for feedback, so here is mine:
After three uses in the Abisko lite 2 in typical Danish terrain and summer:
Its light and it packs very small, its very easy to setup, only take a few minutes.
Very nice feature with the pecks and poles strapping to the tent itself in there own seperate pouches.
The poles and pecks are light, strong and easy to use, although i would have enjoyed longer pecks.
As you can see at 09:32 almost 50% of the tents ventilation is blocked by the apsis(the part you can roll away).
That part do not have anything to hold the apsis back from the top string and down, that means that it flaps in the wind, blocks ventilation and blocks the view and when it gets wet it sticks to the netting letting water through.
The tent does not give "Extreme, really nice flow of air", it condensates really easy, even with everything rolled up and tighten and orientated correctly with the wind.
The panels are so large that they hang when just dew falls on it, and that makes the strings loosen up, which forces you to get out and retighten the strings once or twice before going to bed, in wet grass mind you.
The panel on the rear section easily falls in when it get moist, making it touch the inner tent, and that makes them "stick" to each other letting water into the tent.
And you cant go out and change the orientation of the tent every time the wind changes.
The height in the footend is not enough, my sleepingbag touches it relatively easily, making the panels touch wetting my sleepingbag.
Yes it holds two persons, but with every bit of gear outside the innertent tightly up against the apsis leaving close to no room for cooking.
It offers great view, im able to sit up inside the tent, im 172cm.
Fjällräven´s own photos of the tent are the exact same as the Abisko lite 3, and the way they rolled up the apsis and the opening of the door on those photos and own experience makes me think they did not even bother taking two photos.
The no-see-um net is wonderfull at keeping out even the smallest insect we have here in Denmark, but... it also blocks the wind and prevents proper ventilation in the innertent, there is a VERY clear difference with the net up and the net down, so when its summer you have two choices: either be eaten by bugs ruining your entire trip or get a hot/humid tent wet with condensation.
Fjällräven claims that with the "Scandinavian pitch", the innertent it kept dry when pitching in the rain, that is not true; as soon as the wet outertent touches the innertent they stick to each other and water comes through.

As I live close to you I can relate to what you’re saying about wind and condensation. I think it’s a completely different situation up north, at least that’s my experience. We used the 3 person tent not to long ago up north, lots of rain and wind, all in all I think it help up ok, I had to pack it down wet so the inner tent got wet after a while too, as soon as the sun came out it dries up quickly though.

Yes, a positive point i forgot to mention; it dries very quick; clear sun and some good wind and in one hour its almost dry.

Oddly enough, a priority of mine for tents is light-blocking. Not from the sun, but because I feel bad for disturbing other campers with my bright ass headlamp! Did you feel like it blocked light pretty well in comparison to other tents?

This is my dream tent for my wife & I to use whenever we go backpacking. I’ve been looking @ the blue one for the better part of a year now. I think this would B perfect for us, no matter if we’re going on a weekend excursion or 1 of the Triple Crown trails. Ted, my man, ty so much for doing a video on this particular tent. Outstanding...now I want it even more after watching this video, lol!! after seeing how big it is, the space in the vestibule, how U can totally open it up for warmer temps, bad ass tent folks! I think I would even invest in the mesh tent that U can switch out for. I would imagine that would make the Abisko Lite 2 even lighter w/ the mesh inner tent swapped out?

Here in Southern California, I set up my beach blanket in a similar way. I use an old duvet cover, because let's be honest, I need more room than just a towel and then it's practically a bed. I always put my bag on the first corner though, have to weigh it down.

I am planning on doing several 5 to 8 day hikes next year together with my dog (Beagle). Do you think the floor is though enough to cope with dog nails? Or is an extra sort of mat necessary?
Hard to say, but I’d bring a small mat just be sure but also because it’s more comfortable for that dog of yours!
Useful video that Ted.....purchasing a good 3/ 4 season tent is high on my list this year ....like this one or the abisko view or even the abisko dome but the dome is a little bit more than I’d like to pay but we’ll see.

When you got the 2 p version. Did you consider the 3 p? Small differences in weight and packing size but wider and higher.
Absolutely, if you’re going 2 people I’d choose the 3p tent, I used the 2p for solo adventures! Great idea!
great tent, shame the main door though is not zipped at the base to tuck it away in one of those side pockets. A 2 person albeit for one and 4 season for 2kg and an option for warmer seasons with a mesh inner option, maybe the one tent for year round use is found.

Hej Ted. Im 2 meters tall. Will my sleeping bag hit the end when im on a thermarest sleeping pad? Usually the angle is sloped so much on tents that its hard for me to know if it will fit me when im lifted up a bit

Hey Ted, the ground straps for the Abisko are they supposed to be tensioned ? The ones from my Abisko 1 are too loose and I can’t find any guidance.
I tried everything I could think of but couldn’t figured that out and is an important detail for the whole structure and resistance of the tent to have the straps tensioned.

This depends on the situation you’re in and how well the tent’s secured to the ground, if it’s windy and loose ground I’d tension it to prevent it from moving and eventually coming undone, also when you tension it you get a feeling of how secure it is to the ground and if adjustments are needed.
On lower altitudes and still conditions it could be nice to tension in order for rain and debris to fall of easier. Hope that helps! :)

Tjena Joakim! Visst finns det billigare alternativ men om tanken är att du ska ha det en längre tid är det helt klart värt att investera i ett bra tält! För mig funkar Lite tälten klockrent, älskar mångsidigheten! Vet dock inte om dom finns i 4-manna. Kanske abisko endurance kan vara något då?
I've recently purchased this tent along with the additional pole kit. Can you tell me how the additional poles will benefit the tent please?
Sure thing, they are to be used together in really stormy conditions. when there's a lot of wind you simply put another pole in the channel to reinforce the strength and stability of the tent. :)
Will I notice my difference in weight and bulk between this and the abisko lite 1? I find having a 2p tent is much more useful if I take the dog camping etc.
There is a difference of course but it’s worth it in space!
When putting op the tent it's way more important to see if the ground is level. NEVER sleep with your head lower then your feet!

How is the condensation in this tent?
I always open everything up to get the most ventilation, of course it all depends on how humid it is outside and how close to water you are, on my 40 day adventure last year I had zero problem with condensation!

I just have a question
I can see large warning signs on my new Abisko 2 Lite against fire danger as it has no fire protection.
Should I be very afraid cooking carefully in the vestibulen in bad weather or do I have a chance stopping a Fire
it's not recommended to cook in the tent, in bad weather id put the stove just outside of the tent away from wind!
@@TedWeirum Thanks - I was testing the tent in strong winds, where my Flashboil Minimo couldn’t burn outside in wind, so I carefully sat with my burner between my legs in the vestibule with one hand on the regulator (and the other on the cup) so I could turn off immediately if anything happened.
I also found out that the strap to open the ventilation at the bottom of the door could be used to open from the top so there is a “window” and lots of air came in. I am going to use that Window function a lot - Dont now if is designed for that but it is perfect.
It felt very safe, but I was also ready to turn it off and I only use boiling water and turned on With the ignition button when the Cup was on the boiler and when it was boling I stopped the burner before removing the Cup
The tent is also super in bad weather. Just super - I felt so safe.
The only bad thing is that it is not too high when you are 2 meters tall as I am, but it goes - I Can sit inside with my head in the vestibule

@@TedWeirum I Will try this but I am not sure if it will work because making the window I have to pull the zipper all the way down from above, otherwise the tent fabric will be too tight.
But it also works fine with “my” window - I can as a tall person sit inside the tent with my head and feet in the vestibule - It gives better space for the head and I had made a small footprint of fire-retardant and waterproof windbarier (for housebuilding :) ) so I Can sit without boots - It gives better space for me as tall guy and if it is not windy but raining I can sit inside and stick my head and arm out the window and cook outside while I myself sit comfortably in dry tent. It was that I first tried but the Wind was to strong

i expected a bigger version of the abisco lite 1 ? tunnel tents are a bit heavyer and limiting view wise .youl get a crooked neck sat like that
I understand what you mean, since you can remove or fold up the big entrance side of the vestibule you do get a great view! :)

Thank you for the video and review of the Fjällräven Abisko Lite 2. Great tent definitely worth consideration. What is the seasonal rating? I must have missed it.
I like the big pouch area.
One tip I learnt from the Scouts was to hammer in the pegs without the guideline on the peg. I believe there are several reason but the main ones were not to have the hammer bounce off the guide rope and hit you and the other was so you don't damage the guide rope with the hammer.
Another was to mark the guide ropes in some way as people always trip over them. :-)

Great video 👍 I was just about to get the Abisko shape 2 when someone pointed out that it's not possible to be seated without touching the tent, except for part of the vestibule and the entrance, I'm not sure if this is an issue, maybe if you're stuck in bad weather. I found another tunnel tent with sufficient headroom in the whole inner (Tatonka Rokua 2) but I can't find any reviews, not sure if it holds up to the quality of Fjällräven.. any thoughts?
It’s down to your height of course, like you saw you can sit ok in the vestibule and entrance. I haven’t had a chance to try the other tent, I’m happy with this tent, I used it for 40 days during my hike through the Swedish mountain range. :)

Really nice tent and it's a 4 season. I noticed a couple things but maybe it doesn't need them; a rainfly and a foot print. Are they available or not required? Btw, I stayed up extra to watch the video because you were 2 hours late, haha. Not really, it was 4pm my time. Peace
It definitely doesn't need a rainfly, nor does it require a footprint.
Whether or not you want a footprint is a matter of personal preference. There are a few benefits, mainly in hotter weather and one some types of ground, but it does weigh more and take up some space. It does not add much complexity though, as Fjällräven footprints can usually be attached semi-permanently (I have no experience with this particular tent, so take my advice with a grain of salt).
hahahaha, I knew it! :) the rainfly is the green part of the tent so no need for extras there, a footprint could be useful depending on where you intend to set it up. in rockier areas it would be a great addition! thanks for watching brother! even if it was later than usual! :)

Do you reckon it's too low for someone who's ~190cm tall to sit inside?
I've been looking for a new, lightweight tent for a long time now and the Lite 2 is the most interesting one except for the height. 90cm feels like you'd have to sit quite hunched over if you get stuck in there on a rainy day.
The Hilleberg Nallo 2 seems interesting too since it's 100cm tall, but I'm not keen on the extra 400g weight and condensation issues I keep hearing about (or the extreme price).
That’s a tough one, I still think this one is to prefer, I mean you probably won’t be able to sit straight in none of them on a rainy day anyways. You plan on using it for winter treks or summer?
@@TedWeirum That's true, would probably need a dome tent for sitting comfortably, which I'm averse to due to the extra weight they tend to carry.
I'll probably use it mostly in summer, with occasional winter hikes (like once per winter maybe). This tent seems to have decent ventilation and wind stability from what I've heard so it strikes me as a pretty good all-rounder
Yeah, agreed! I think it would be a good companion for summer treks, on sunny days you’d just roll back the vestibule and enjoy the sky! :)
