Thanks again for a well reasoned explanation. I've come to a similar conclusion myself about the underrated capability of the .22lr and been thinking of getting myself a Winchester Wildcat recently. While I'm less concerned than you about the risk from lead from occasional use your explanation of the energy per area and increased Cd around the speed of sound and testing of the sub sonics was helpful also. Please note: This is just a theoretical discussion for better understanding of terminal ballistics and most likely not lawful anywhere.
When I look at the bone penetrating capabilities of the .22lr I think it can kill every land living animal of the size of a moose if:
- you aim on the brain
- you hit the head bone in an angle that the bullet penetrates
Perhaps an elefant or other very large animals have a too thick head bone to penetrate or the lead bullet dismantles too strong instead of penetrating.
If you use a lead free bullet the penetrating capabilities and the dimensional stability should be better.

There are reasons government entities limit the smallest usable calibers for hunting bigger species.
I find the idea of hunting even roe deer with a .22lr very much unethical. Even aiming for the head in a hunting scenario is very questionable at best. Not to mention you are talking about a subsonic cartridge. A small bullet is very sensitive to wind and they drop very fast and hold only 40J of energy to 100m. The legal limit to hunt moose over here is over 65 times that.
There is absolutely no reason to give up the advantages of a center fire caliber when hunting big game animals.

you are right with most things (besides that 40J on 100m). Shooting on a head is not a problem if everything fits. In Lapland we shoot grouses on the head on up to 200m. You can learn to shoot under 1cm on 100m. This video is not about actually hunting a moose with a .22lr. As I describe in the video I made it for the following purposes:
- sensitizing that .22lr is a serious rifle cartridge and not any toy
- showing that in theory hunting is possible and that meadow shooting is working
- romanticizing about the idea of living with a backpack in wilderness
- showing that every bullet is dangerous and needs to be handled with care
originally I also wanted to discuss shot placements which I left out for the described reasons.
On the same hand you would need to state that hunting with bow is unethical as the energy is there even much less.
@@nomadic-trapper Any attempt at an objective consideration of bullet behavior in a hunting/survival context will bring people out of the woodwork to condemn imagined crimes. It hardly matters what you actually claimed to begin with.
