not a flute, it's Ukrainian folk musical instrument , called "Sopilka"
I was wondering cause in the performance I thought it was a tin whistle... Do you know if they're similar?

Israel has a good song too, but I personally disqualify every english song from a non english speaking country.
@@maximilianmaier3950 I agree, singers should represent both their language and culture. Otherwise it will end up like an international version of The Voice. This year has some really great songs though.
@@maanlicht8583 Iceland last year made me furious. I actually liked their song last year but the even had an icelandic version and chose to sing in english anyways....
@@maximilianmaier3950 O I didn't know they did that. I love icelandic language and culture (my sis did a school paper on it). I think songs should have limited english like they have in the Junior ESC version. Our dutch artist has a bit of Surinaams in it but sadly still only one sentence
@@maximilianmaier3950 Oh, the no longer obligation of using the language of the country has been inserted to level the field. Seen for years where Belgian Dutch (Flemish) contenders got slashed while their French counterparts got more praise and points with lower quality of songs.

How is that according to the rules when the songs that enter ESC need to be a new song?
@@onomatopoetisk First version of the song titled "ШУМ" is basically a cover of the old Ukrainian folk song.
So they needed to to change it cus its not fully original song and it was longer then 3 minutes. So they made this version for eurovision, still inspired by the same old spring folk song, but with different, original lyrics + some lyrics they borrowed from folk song.

Shum means noise and these chants are part of a ritual to awaken the spring 🌼🌸🌺 after the cold winter ❄️🥶
Shum is the Ukrainian god of the forest, to whom they sang spring songs - "vesnyanki" and called for spring. so writing not noise, but write Shum.
You are both right - shum means a sound and shum(a) in croatian is a forest. I guess called after the god of forest.

Solovey was a masterpiece, the first 4.20 long version was a masterpiece. Good luck to Ukraine, they are in my Top 3 for 2021 (as I can't vote for my own country and the competition is big this year!). Way better than the overhyped Malta...

Thank you! This is an ancient ukrainian folk song about arrival spring and sun. And Kateryna singing like folk manner. They used folk music instruments - sopilka. Shum - old forest name.
It's ethno/folk techno. The beat is techno or even psy trance sounding. Nothing to do with pop or punk

Do you recognise the site where the clip was done ? At Tchernobyl (Tchernobyl is in Ukraine) ! The big building far aways the forest is the sarcophage of the reactor (4:07 and 5:17 of the video).
Chornobyl is in Ukraine, not Tchernobyl
Actually the song roots back to traditional ritual song which people would sing at the beginning of spring to wake the nature up after winter. And the place of Chernobyl is chosen not occasionally. Chernobyl zone, which had been abandoned for decades, is coming back to life now. Wild nature has taken over. The zone is covered with forests and lots of rare animal species are back there. So it’s an allegory of waking up after a long winter/atomic dream. There are lots of symbols and hints in the clip:)

@@AlexandraRacheva interesting thing perhaps - in recent years scientists have been talking about raising low-THC industrial hemp in the area round Chornobyl as a way to remove radioactive nucleides from the environment. I love how the song is about spring & rebirth of life in the forest, and about sowing hemp, and how they used Chornobyl as the backdrop for their video. :-)

They are fairly new to public, but the band has over 8 years of history. They have specific style, that’s why they were not in mainstream until talking part in Eurovision contest in 2020 and 2021

The huge grey building in the frame is the infamous radioactive failed Chernobyl power plant that killed lots of people in 80s
The whole theme for the song is the folklore Spring rite awakening.. lovely beat

They are really a good and interesting group and they are clearly taking a risk by bringing this type of sound which is veeeeerry different than what we are used to. This is a bold move. I really love them and have fallen for them. But I understand that people also can be rebuked by that sound, this is not for beginners!

Shum - is the name of a pagan god, who was meant to awaken spring, and such songs were popularly called vesnianky or spring songs.

Yes, they are performing a ritual, song is of native motives, and native songs are going faster and faster and sang while dancing around big campfire. Lyrics are about calling to a forest spirit - Shum ("Noise" - as winter forest is silent, so "noise" is what brings spring), and they are singing about planting seeds and good harvest and asking Shum to bring spring faster. Costumes like that is because this spirit was believed mostly in Polissya - where Chernobyl is, and it is 35 years after Chernobyl catastrophe this year.
As a techno lover, it's my favorite from Eurovision 2021.
I had never heard a song like that! it is captivating, it collects you and takes you to another world, a different dimension.

maybe someone`ve already written, "Shum"( reads as shoom) translates usely as "noise", but in this particular case, as a very very very old before christian times ritual song of spring greeting, translates as "forest"
p.s. you know, green forest that makes this soft, almost ASMR, sound. Soft NOISE of leaves touched with wind =)

This took a well-deserved fifth place in the final last weekend. I almost voted for this, it was my absolute favorite until italy came on... I love to see songs utilizing traditional music styles in eurovision.
This is one of the famous Ukrainian folk song which came from tribal times up to now. This song had been singing (mostly) by young people around the Big Fire at the end of the Winter in order to call the Spring about 1000 years ago . The fire means "say bye to Winter and greet the Spring" ....The main element of the song - "SHUM" (en - "Noise", ua - "Шум"). It is the ancient Slavic god). So the Slavic people used to dance around the fire and asking SHUM to bring the spring (and good harvest as well). And that is why it is energetic and hypnotizing cause people were too tired of Winter so they extremely asking God (universe, nature, whatever) for Spring (warn season) to come!
Green fur coat - Fur coat traslated (the same sence) in Ukrainian as "шуба" (shuba). The song is telling us that Slavic god "Shum" has got green coat . That's why Kateryna was wearing that fascinating cloth element.

that s the fascination of music, when we discover music from all around the world....only one/two nations hold the music market to this day.....and its consumed, music wise i mean.... but,as you see, the world is moving, so many interesting siongs this years ESC and we can hear it..Ukranian is surely one of the most interesting...they bring legends, rituals, spiritual vibes, dance music with a fascination to it ,not just only dance dance bla bla....the girl never smiles, never flirts with the camera,....she gets your attention for her dark charisma

Reaction to this year's Eurovision! That's great! I love it :-) I'd recommend Belgium's entry, "The Wrong Place" by Hooverphonic.
