Crossbow is an #Arcade game released by Exidy in 1983. It was later published by Absolute Entertainment for the Commodore 64 and MS-DOS, and by Atari Corporation for the Atari 2600, Atari 7800 and Atari 8-bit family starting in 1987.
It was the first arcade game with fully digitized sound and speech (some earlier games such as Journey used a loop tape for music and speech effects). It also featured some of the most advanced graphics of the time. Crossbow featured an optical #lightgun that resembled a full-sized crossbow.
Gameplay requires the player to protect a band of adventurers (referred to as "friends" by the game) from afar by shooting objects that threaten them. The adventurers enter from the left-hand side of the screen and attempt to cross the screen unharmed. If the player helps them reach the opposite side of the screen safely, the adventurers survive to the next scenario, and new adventurers are occasionally granted between scenarios.
In addition to the obstacles, the adventurers are vulnerable to the player's shots. The first time the player shoots an adventurer, an on-screen message is shown: "DON'T SHOOT YOUR FRIENDS!" Thereafter, shooting an adventurer will cause him/her to emit a cry of pain, and to walk at a slower pace the rest of the way. A second shot will kill the adventurer.
Scenarios are chosen by shooting a destination on a map screen, which include: town, desert, volcano, cave, bridge, jungle, and castle. The goal is to reach the final scenario, past the castle, in which the player confronts the Master of Darkness, who presumably created the dangers in the game. Defeating the Master of Darkness requires shooting him in the eyes when they turn red (and deadly). The player is treated to a brief congratulation and a challenge to defeat the Master of Darkness, but if you dare. Following this screen the player starts over with however many adventurers survived the confrontation.

Honestly forgot this game existed until I saw this. Dredging up 40 year old memories.
I know I played this game before, I remembered the eye. For some reason I was thinking the graphics were better than this. I guess back in 83 it was impressive.
Loved nailing the eye "waaaaaagh!!" even though it was useless ...
At least it netted some big points, besides being satisfying.
This is how my uncle went, he was walking through the desert, a small white rabbit hopped up and touched his foot, he immediately burst into flames and burned to the ground.
I've got a 1983 original Exidy Crossbow arcade cabinet in my game room. So much fun! It's right next to Gaunlet, another awesome game from the 80's.
I was always attracted to play this but I sucked at it. Looking back at it so many years later, it was pretty innovative for the time (the sound effects and larger multi colored sprites). I remember the old mechanical popup shooting arcade games, like Midways Haunted House gun game, that were so fun before they switched over to video games.
I absolutely loved this game at the arcade! Didn’t get far but was fun. Ghost sound after he got shot in the town was my fav 😅
next to the tron game this was my favorite arcade game
I spent alot of allowance on this one
That's me too
This game was a sensation for me in the Hall(1983). The best was the big Eye.Uuaeha!!! 5000 points.
I worked in a bowling alley in 85 and no matter where you were in the whole place, you could hear that game and you decend into madness
I applaud your shooting skill!! Especially in the ice caves and the dungeon!!!!
This person is the best Crossbow player I've ever seen.
Holy shit, this looks and sounds very impressive for a 1983 arcade game...
This was/is a great game! Loved it!
Just got to play this in a barcade in Orlando!
I got this as a 2600 cart hand-me-down. I thought it was a weird game and had to figure out what to do. It makes more sense to learn it was an arcade game for a light gun. I learned that nearly all their games made by them in 1977-1980 were arcade ports. Pity they didn't include the boss level on that version; would have made more sense to have a story.
finally a playthrough with someone with some actual skill...
Agreed. Quite refreshing
That's my momma in the town square, upper right window! She was saying Bless You, not Curse You! 😊
They need to add a level where the Four Beatles are trying to cross Abbey Road.
Bruh, just imagine some kid intentionally committing friendly fire on 8-bit John Lennon while their friends all laugh hilariously at the edginess on display. 😂
I remember how the laughing eye scared me as a kid "Ha-Ha-Haaa! BLEH!!"
My all time favorite!!
Played this game a ton. Would have been much easier with that sight.
I remember playing this game at a KOA in New York. It wasn't even a quarter to play it. I think it was a dime. Now I can't even go to a KOA with any arcade games.
Totally forgot about this game until now. I remember the cabinet looked awesome with the crossbow light gun, but I don't think I dumped many quarters into it. It was a difficult game.
Wow, haven't thought about this game in 30 years..
Nice shootin’, Tex! 🤠
Would be nice if they make a crossbow game with good graphics, for PS5, X-box and PC.
I remember playing this at a miniature golf arcade in California..and I was always pissed when I lost the blonde chick in the red dress
The player didn't know he could shoot out the street lights in the town level.
This game was way too hard for me as a kid at the arcade. I feel like the crossbow was difficult to maneuver, and of course it was broken most of the time. I was always fascinated to know how many different bonus characters you were given. If I'm correct, I think there were 7 characters total? Fun stuff!
I don't think I ever saw the final boss until now...
This is trivial with a mouse.
Just as trivial as with a gun. Probably easier with a gun actually.
@@HIDEFACES With all due respect, not a freaking chance. The crossbow was big and clunky, on a pivot, and had iffy iron sights. This was a pretty impressive playthrough, though.
Lmao at 1:50! "Click! BE-BE-BE-BE-BE-BE...F-YOU!"
What are you playing this on? I tried a 7800 emulator and was shocked by how poor the graphics are. I'm glad I never bought one. Really not much improvement over the 5200.
2:21... did the witches say "f**k you" when they get shot?
I ruled this and karate champ, joust, area 51 and all the police, cowboy, hunting and sniper games since then. Today's 50 button combos are not for me.
this game had grit
Y don’t they release this game for home games?
I bought the Atari 7800 version when I was a kid
Ha ha haaaahhh........... BLEH
Brought to you by your friends the illuminati
HA HA HAAAH !
Tas this.
HAHAHA....BLAH!
This level of reaction time was impossible on the arcade version.
Yeah there's no way you could swing the crossbow quickly enough to do this on the arcade version even if you could react.
Good vs 😈 evil I remember this when I was a kid bring back memories. The devil and his demonic group had other's helping him.
