- Did you know that only 10 minutes up the slopes of Hualalai from the heart of Kailua Kona is the Kona cloud forest? In this forest resides the Kona Cloud Forest Sanctuary, offering daily forest tours AND mediation and sound bathing. Right up the street is Mountain Thunder Coffee, which offers a tour of the production of Kona coffee and a self guided tour of the plantation (bring your free coffee sample cup with you!) We take you on these tours AND to a popular eatery, Willie's Hot Chicken in the Brewery Block, where you get to the meet the owner.
If you are looking for a way to spend a day in Kailua Kona, you can do all three of these. If you are coming to the island in December-March, you may wish to bring a jacket to the upper elevations.

Three Things I Learned During This Video Shoot:
1. If you cut all the trees down on a mountain for ranching, you adversely affect the watershed below, causing further degradation of the environment. It takes only a concerted effort to replant to reverse the damage.
2. Don't freeze or refrigerate coffee! The moisture difference of being cool and warm can affect and even ruin the coffee AND odors of food can get change the flavor of your coffee.
3. When you eat particularly spicy foods, you want to be careful of rubbing your eyes and "going to the bathroom" as quoted by the owner of Willie's Hot Chicken!

We visited Mountain Thunder Coffee back in 2012 & 2014. Things have really changed, so on our next visit we will have to check it out again. We will also have to go to the Cloud Forest. Thanks for all your interesting videos.
