I agree that the paid parking issue is a problem that prevents many customers from regularly visiting businesses in Kailua Village. It should be abolished or the fee significantly reduced. It was a bad idea that has proven to be bad for business.
Aloha..start a petition on the parking issue. That really is a conflicting issue especially for businesses, travelers & mostly Islanders. Who owns the parking lots? I would like to know because there could be another solution. Aloha
Just returned from my 3rd trip to Hawaii, stayed partly in Kona all 3 years. First visit was 2007. We sadly noticed the degenerative nature of Kona. Hate to see that. It’s a sentimental place for us, got married at Kikaua point, had breakfast on our wedding day at the Fish Hopper. Husband grew up in Hilo. Saw this happening in other places too on the Big island. Still an amazing place!! But we did notice it.
Always best to “fix” issues proactively. Once government gets involved, the greed is unmanageable. I don’t think you want the government to regulate you into fairness. You are right about making it better with grassroots efforts.
after visiting Hong Kong many times and then driving thru the heart of Honolulu, one can realize quickly that there is a strong resemblance between the two cities.....crowded, smells of garbage in the back alley of restaurants/hotels; high rises where people living on top of each other and the fast pace life. The only difference is that Hong Kong has over 7 times the population of Oahu with comparable traffic congestions; cheaper cost of living and better mass transit system that people are actually using. Maybe we can make Honolulu a Free-Port like Hong Kong some day and call it Honkonlulu and benefit more.
We have been to the big island many times and have enjoyed following the two of you and all you share with us all. I fully agree with you both and don’t want greed to rule our lives. Thank you for this, one other thing I noticed was that there wasn’t much of a self sufficiency in terms of at least produce etc. (except for some in big island) is that so? I am not saying there should be a lot of farm lands ruining the nature (with big Ag and such) but perhaps even backyard gardening, tiny farms etc. could be a bit of a ‘movement’ or such especially with such fertile soil (esp. in big island) where anything that hits the ground seems to take off. That would take off some of the external reliance as well on big companies etc. What are your thoughts on that? These days people in certain areas are ditching their lawns for growing produce and many following it. Perhaps there could be some middle ground on airbnb as well which I think may have happened too.
Poor Kona Inn, bad enough what covid did, now the parking is doing in the rest. Feels like the whole downtown will be shuttered soon and so many buildings need rehabbing. Greed.
My wife and I are celebrating one year living in Kona after looking for five years for a home. We live in the Palisades. We experienced everything you guys talk about! A couple months ago after Yoga we went down town to try a highly recommended acai bowl place,. It was very good however I will NEVER go there again because there is no reason on Gods Green earth to be charged 13.00 per hour for parking! It is very sad that we can't go down town and visit the local shops. Also, I am still not used to putting on my blinker and having people slow down to let me in! Driving in California I never used my blinker because if people thought I was going to merge they would speed up. Mahalo, Julie for starting the Chocolate Festival. We went this year for the first time and loved it.
When i go to Hawaii or Maui. I pay enough in tax’s The city should use that money for their citizens…………. Remember after the fire 9 months later they wanted us back to spend money .
One more thing Please explain why a local grown watermelon at Costco is 13.00. I am here at the Costco in Michigan and am buying watermelons at 5.00 all day long. There are no shipping costs for local grown Melons?? Do they sprinkle them with magic dust??
Sounds like it might be worth doing a video just on the parking situation. Seems there is a lot of misinformation out there. Hawaii residents get 90 minutes of free parking at Coconut Grove for example and a the $5 per hour of $15 for 5 additional hours. Yes, you need to validate residency with a photo of you DL but after that, just requires sending a text message to park.
You have to have a mobile phone and know how to scan the code in order to park... you can park at the under ground parking garage and just give you license plate number to Kai's Eats and Drinks...same with Huggos and On the Rocks..no QR code.
They should make parking free for locals and just charge tourists, that way it’s a win/win. Also, when Hawaiians are pushed out of our ancestral homelands by the very people who are moving here and trying to live by our cultural ideologies of aloha, ho’oponopono, kuleana, mālama, ahonui etc etc, it’s disingenuous. Malihini keep talking about “paradise being lost”, without acknowledging that they are participating in that disappearance. We’ve said it time and time again, there is no Hawai’i without Hawaiians. When our people are forced out, they take aloha and all of our other ideologies with them, what’s left is a third-party false impersonation of these ideologies by people who are appropriating our culture.. Everyone keeps asking “wheres the aloha spirit” now days… how the million non-Hawaiians living in our homeland haven’t recognized the correlation between a disappearing aloha spirit and the disappearance of these islands aboriginal native people, if baffling to me, it’s no coincidence. We are a part of these islands in a way that malihini cannot really understand, if you remove us, you kill the islands in the same way removing someone’s heart from their body will kill them. That’s what you’re witnessing, the murder of our islands. If anyone wants to REALLY be pono, you have to right the wrongs you’ve contributed to and get Hawaiians back to our homelands, otherwise there is no saving “paradise”.

Unless you have lived and worked here, it would be hard to truly understand the state of our housing situation. Most businesses are short staffed because there is no affordable housing solutions for those working in the tourist industry. Locals who have been here for generations, have difficulty considering raising their children in their home. This has happened over the last 15 years with the introduction of Airbnb and VrBo onto the scene. The idea is not to completely eliminate STR, but to put much stronger regulations on where they can exist and how many can operate. Please understand that this has already happened on Oahu with no negative effect on tourism. Maui is currently making much needed changes as well, and the Big Island will follow suit. This is not an us and them situation, but rather how can we make the islands a HOME first for residents, and second, a lovely vacation spot for tourists. It’s a shift that is much overdue.

They are hard to grow here! They can rot on the ground due to high precipitation here and land, water, taxes and labor costs are highest in nation.

Local retailers could become involved in a parking validation system. Offering customers a partial refund of the parking fee.
