  • Rebellions, Barbarian hordes, crippling debt, religious strife and (mostly) terrible leaders... suffice to say that we face many issues on this campaign. Let's see if we can turn this ship around and bring glory back to the empire!

    hello i think that you should have played a diffrent faction that no one has played such as the samrmatians ,roxolani and the bugandians and other factions

      I thought I'd change it up as I'm usually the underdog factions. But I would like to play as them one day. Most the obscure factions have been played by me :D

    Hands downs one of the funnest campaigns ever. At the end of it, you feel so proud to over come the odds of the hard difficulty, the barbarian hordes, rebels, rival empires.
    Usually I let the eastern provinces rebel and this creating a buffer state between you and the hordes. I deal with the rebels, focus on Alemanni and Celts. After that the Berbers, Saxons, Franks. Most of the time the rebel provinces come back to the fold because I am doing so well and annihilating the hordes. By then ERE will be attacking you and I am usually launching naval raids into Egypt and Palestine.

    • @ToNerdistoHumanTNH
      @ToNerdistoHumanTNH  Před rokem

      Ywah i think this is all about calculated sacrifices. A rebel buffer state is not a bad plan at all! Likewise, if the Franks are silly enough to take nearby tiny territories then I'll tactically let them rot in their little village and take the larger city :D Let's see how this goes.

    A few future tips to maximize income and make your time easier (or for atleast new Players of the WRE):
    Caralis and Syracuse's military buildings can be safely demolished, at the start. (If playing with Darth's mod, Palma's too) to focus on economic growth as the AI will not invade coastally with their current set up
    (You can experiment with that, in the Descr_Strat's AI line and Descr_Sm. By replacing their AI line with the AI line of the ERE/Sassanids or by adding the prefix of ""Sailor"" instead of ""Religious"")
    Rush The Celts, Berbers, saxons and alemanni since they're not hordes.
    (The military buildings in Britannia ((Britain)), Hispannia ((Spain)) and Mauritannia ((The rest of North Africa here, barring Lepcis and Carthage untill you invade Egypt)) can subsequently be demolished for quick cash ((and once again be focused for economic growth)) to fight the european and middle-eastern theatre's of war. Same goes for the ERE start: Limmasol and of Crete)
    If your settlements are on the verge of revolting; spam Peasents. Move Generals (Good ones in troubled cities, bad ones out). Lower taxes and put on the games where you can, switch the capital to Massilia. ((Due note: some new cities may now by on the verge of revolt, but its better than once before. Since you can save prior unsavable cities))
    Abide en-masse changing religions untill you've solved other unhappiness factors first ((unless there's a incorrect religious building pre-built in a opposite religion's settlement causing the unrest, ie a pagan temple in a christian settlement and vice versa then go ahead demolish those))
    If you cant save your settlement no matter what you do, it is best that you destroy all military buildings, religious pagan buildings and blacksmiths. (Since the roman rebel AI's army will have their army bonus's and the quality of the buildings determines the quality of troops. So no stables, means no Cav. No barracks only means peasents)
    Have huge cities (Like Rome) and other parts of the empire continuously produce peasants and send them to the frontier cities (to both effectively control squalor penalties and hurry the production of advanced buildings to pump out better troops to fight the front)
    Fight on the realisitc setting and add the battle timer to be on.
    (The morale battle effect while it can be a double edged sword for you, however impossible battles will be made possible and the timer to prevent the ai from being stationary in sally-outs).
    If you're going for a pure Christian family run, send all your pagan family members upon their respective frontlines (Don't forget to give some of their ancillaries to the Christian ones).
    And if you're going for a pure Pagan family run instead, do the same as you would do so for the Christian one.
    But most importantly here during both of these runs (or just playing regularly), gather *all* the bad ones (no matter which religion they are here) and put them into said frontier armies.

    After beating this twice on hardest, its usually not that bad imo. And im not like a god at tw or anything, i just know rtw very well. Maybe just luck but the celts and other barbarians rarely attacked, berbers are pushovers, only the ere and hordes gave me trouble but even at worst i lost no more than salona and aquincum. Just gotta play your cards right for the first dozen or so turns, the only settlement you cant save early on is lepcis magna but itll revolt back to you eventually

    • @ToNerdistoHumanTNH
      @ToNerdistoHumanTNH  Před rokem

      Absolutely. This is all about having a clear early strategy to stabilise and rebuild. I think after 12 turns you're probably most of the way to turning it around (or burning into the ground! 😅

    if you have troops in a ship, and their limited movement makes the ship unable to move more, click on the ship itself.
    it will show u ONLY the movement of that ship, ignoring the army inside it. this will usually allow u to move MUCH further. if after u moved far away (almost to max distance) and then send into that fleet another ship and move the original ship out, u will then be able to select that new ship and move it, often with much more movement than before (if it didnt move much originally). this can help you move armies over VAST distances if u place ships in the correct locations along the path.

    I've finished this campaign several times, and had an easier time with paganism. The easiest campaign was the one where I used a mixed religious policy, and just let the city's official religion be whatever the majority of the population was. Christianity is only better than paganism for public order for huge cities that have built both the Christian shrine and the hermitage to their final levels, which requires ridiculously more turns and denarii than a large temple of Sol Invictus. Time and money spend on religion is time and money not spent on economy and military, and those misallocated resources aren't going to do anything against the hordes.
    I will say though, that Christian towns tend to generate much more interesting retinue and holy relics. You gotta love a general with Helena's nail and the Lance of Longinus. My faction leader once had the pope and St. Augustine in his retinue.
    Most general's bodyguard have an alternate attack that the AI won't use automatically. You have to hold alt and issue the attack order. For WRE Imperial German bodyguard, they use a spatha instead of their spear. It's worse for charging, but better for melee, because it has a higher attack rate. The ERE's generals alt attack is actually armor piercing, but for most any general the alt attack is better once the melee has started.

    • @ToNerdistoHumanTNH
      @ToNerdistoHumanTNH  Před rokem

      Yes, I think part of the Christian decision is that the retinue are interesting and quite strong for converting. I do agree though it can easily go either way! And yes, the alt weapons are definitely under utilised but very potent. We'll have to make use of that next time out!

    If I remember correctly, the best way to handle the public order of Augusta Trevororum is to send a unit or two from the smaller settlement above it, maybe get a unit of peasants in to replace them, and swap the generals around...been a while since I played this campaign.
    Ps. Sarmatians? They were Foederati, lol. Bit of wishful thinking there?

    Im working my way through the short campaigns in RTW Remastered right now (Currently rushing Julii as the Gauls with 3 full doomstacks on turn 14). When I get to Barbarian Invasion, Im going to do the western roman empire first, that way everything else feels easy as apple pie when I get to them 😂
    Why would I be crazy enough to start with the WRE? Because Im crazy, of course!

    • @ToNerdistoHumanTNH
      @ToNerdistoHumanTNH  Před 5 měsíci +1

    • @nephalos666
      @nephalos666 Před 5 měsíci

      @ToNerdistoHumanTNH right now though Im smashing my face against my keyboard with this Britannia campaign in RTW. Their economy is so utterly garbage, I cannot STAND the chariots in the slightest, and by the time I got my feet finally under me and began making progress against the Gauls, Germania sent a doomstack over and began sieging my towns. They started with Samarobriva, the one town I had that could make decent units.
