For Woman, Life, Liberty (Baraye) - Shervin Hajipour/Rana Mansour

  • I translated Iranian singer-songwriter Shervin Hajipour’s hit song “Baraye” to English 🕊 Being American-born myself but raised by Iranians parents who left during the revolution, I purposely made it my own to reflect my experiences as an Iranian born outside of Iran and never having been to Iran. I do encourage everyone to listen to the original, but this is the point of covers: all songs belong to all the people 🙏🏽 let’s please help spread the word to the western world about his amazing work 🌎 they arrested him for writing this song while living in Iran. #mahsaamini #مهسا_امینی #shervinhajipour #زن_زندگی_آزادی
For dancing in the allies and the streets,
For the thrill and the fear of getting caught kissing
For my sister, my brother, and unity
For all the times we tried to change their minds and stale beliefs
For the loss of pride, and poverty
For the dream of just a normal life for you and me
For all the children who are starving for a loaf of bread
For the greed of politics and all the lies they spread
For all the mass-polluted air we breathe,
For all the litter in the streets and all the dying trees
For all the animals who suffer from elimination
For all the cats and dogs who love us without no conditions
For all the tears that seem to never end
For all the images that keep on turning in our heads
For a simple smile, for just a little while
For the future generations fighting for their time
For empty promises of heaven in the after-life
For all the imprisonment of beautiful minds
For all the babies who are born and for the ones who died
For all the times you told the truth, and all the times you lied
For all the speeches that we heard about a million times
For all the shacks and shelters that were sold to make a dime
For just a glimpse of a peaceful life,
For the rising of the sun after an endless night
For all the pills we pop just to get some sleep
For all mankind, for our country
For all the boys and girls who never knew equality
    For woman, for life, liberty.

There's a part in the original that is missing from this which says, "For the Afghan children". It's my favorite part being from Afghanistan and knowing the fear, war and chaos innocent children face there for the past 50+ years.

"Simplified" is a bit of a stretch. The lyrics are pretty straightforward and mostly universal in the original as well, albeit rather childish in wording and a total hodgepodge from a literary point of view. This translation does a good enough job of finding a coherent style and somehow improving on the original.

Love having an English translation of the song so masterfully performed by you. Thank you. I only wish you had not omitted the line - for the sake of the girl who wished she was a boy. There is so much depth in that line - speaks to the depth of the misogyny and patriarchy that took away girl's freedoms to the extent that she wished she was born a boy so she could have some of those freedoms too. Simple freedoms like going to a soccer game. It also speaks to the truth of some of our QLGBT people. I hope you will consider revising your song and adding that line back in, especially given that the music will outlive all of us. Thanks for considering.

Agreed 100%. Talking about both "boys and girls who never know equality" dilutes the message way too much. I also have problem with this one: "For all the times you told the truth, and all the times you lied". But not as much as the first point.

I like to think that your goal was to increase the scope of the lyrics.
Nevertheless, omit the mentioned sentence and transform the sentence:
"For my sister, for your sister for our sisters" to "For my sister, my brother and unity"
for me took the depth out of a crucial element of the song, which is the subject of violence and oppression against Iranian women in general.
I understand that what is happening in Iran right now may go further than just the problems of Iranian women.
But fact seems to me that the struggle of the Iranian women started this movement in the first place.
That's why it should be emphasized all the time and it's those two sentences that just did that.
Please do not take this comment as a criticism of what you have presented to us, because it is not.
What you have presented to us is really beautiful and moving.
See my comment purely as one of the many thoughts one can experience when touched by beauty.
