  • Andrea Ballance is a ex-member of New Kadampa Tradition (NKT). She speaks about her experiences and ordination in NKT. This is an education to the general public about so called New Kadampa Tradition - a false Buddhist organisation defaming His Holiness the Dalai Lama in the name of religious freedom.

Well done, Andrea. NKT should be so ashamed for just this, but we all know there is much, much more harm they have done.

For those of us in the lineage, who may struggle to make sense of online acrimony and ill will toward us from fellow Buddhists, as I have, I offer the following insights from contemplating and meditating on this very thing. We know samsara is of the nature of suffering. We find evidence of suffering in all the sanghas throughout history, all the way from the Ven. Buddha’s times, with no shortage of schisms in the sangha, even attempted murder and actual murder in the sangha, as recorded in the Suttas. In this current era, in the HHDL,s own monastery, murders occurred, see the story of what happened to the first Regent who discovered HHDL as a child, as well as the upper echelon betrayal leading to the successful Chinese occupation. Murders occurred in Dharmasala, and not only in the Gelug tradition but the Kagyu too, Nyingma, you name it. In fact, there is no lineage, tradition, Buddhist school free from suffering in the sangha. After all, until we have purified and transformed the six classes of living being, we are still deluded and will encounter suffering, as well as be the cause of it, leading to more experience of it, etc. Now, in these degenerate times, we hard headed ones who haven’t found enlightenment yet, despite countless Buddhas emanating throughout countless aeons, we must really have some serious karma going on! Don’t expect your path to be easy, now! Yes, we now have the great fortune to find a highly qualified spiritual guide, who provides us with all the exactly right conditions we need to achieve enlightenment right now! These conditions must be equal, at least, to the dense delusion and karma obstructing our minds! Yes, it is hurtful to encounter disparagement from, it would seem to be, our fellow Buddhist brothers and sisters. That is exactly the point, though! Its what we need. How else would we be able to live the teachings, to appreciate the gifts of suffering, as Shantideva stated, to realize the true meaning of our precious human life! Our spiritual guide has perfectly revealed the unmistaken path. Remember that all phenomena have no inherent existence, so what we experience is a function of our arising karma. Our spiritual guide gives us the tools to transform adverse conditions into the path! We find the perfect conditions, whatever is arising right here, right now. No duality. Geshe Langri Tangpa says it best, “With the intention to attain, the ultimate supreme goal that surpasses even the wishfulfilling jewel, may I constantly cherish others. When I associate with others, may I view myself as the lowest of all, and with a pure intention, cherish others as supreme. Examining my mental continuum throughout all my actions, as soon as I see a delusion of self cherishing arise, that may cause I or another to act inappropriately, may I firmly face it and avert it. Whenever I find unfortunate beings, oppressed by evil and violent suffering, may I cherish them as if I had found a rare and precious treasure. If someone I have helped and in whom I had great hope, nevertheless harms me intentionally, may I view him or her as my holy spiritual guide. When others, out of jealousy or anger, hurt me or insult me, may I take defeat upon myself and offer them the victory. In short, may I directly and indirectly always offer help and happiness to all my mothers and secretly take upon myself all their harm and suffering. With the above practices and a mind undefiled by the stains of the conceptions of the eight extremes, and who sees all phenomena as illusory, may I and all my precious mothers find freedom from mistaken appearance and illusion.” Geshe Langri Tangpa, 8 Verses, as translated by Ven. Geshe Kelsang Gyatso in The (New) 8 Steps to Happiness. I offer my merit to those who feel wronged by the New Kadampa Tradition. May you find the peace of permanent liberation.

Andrea - rely on the Dhamma Buddha put forth. There are no perfect organizations. If you gave your vows to follow Buddha, Dhamma & Sangha, why would you not be ordained? If you think others are supposed to look after you, this might be a wrong expectation.

I witnessed some of what you speak of at NKT. Guilt and shaming the main tools to beat its followers with, a very "closed system"in operation at that centre.I met some good examples , but not many, cultish flavours were shot through this tradition, you cld not have you're own mind. Or experiences., I feel so bad for you my love, wishing you peace and blessings., nothing is wasted.

NTK is marketing Buddhism like a Walmarts selling cheap products. The founder of NTK was expelled from his monastery (Sera) for being extremely sectarian. He dishonestly inherited the centre which belonged to Lama Yeshe (FMPT - Foundation for Preservation of Mahayana Tradition). FMPT invited him as a teacher at the centre but years later refused to leave and converted it into NTK.

Our minds are under the influence of delusion. Pure Dharma is very rare. Practice with faith and all things are possible. Ordination is more about committing to changing your mind, not merely your clothes.

It's so sad when she started crying about being fooled to ordain. For a woman, it's literally worse than getting married without even knowing who the husband is. So horrific.
