My advice would be to find a model railway shop that has a test layout with a variety of different controllers so that you can compare them and see which one suits your needs (avoid the Hornby ones). A good model shop will be happy to discuss your needs and spend time explaining differences. I would certainly take note of the comments below but playing with the actual devices will give you a better understanding of what suits your needs. Don’t just go for one because it’s ‘cheap’ or on ‘special offer’. This technology is brilliant but not cheap. As you are not in a rush, take your time.
I model in 0 gauge over here in the US, but modelling Victorian British prototypes. The advice from NCE is that the PowerCab doesn't quite have the heft for 0 gauge. I use a NCE ProCab set, which behaves like PowerCab but has slightly more current. When my set broke down last year the folks at NCE repaired it without cost, as wiring had become detached inside the controller. Really great customer service, I thought. Apart from that incident, the system has worked extremely well with my locomotives.
I am surprised at the level of detail that is achieved with the current 00 models, but this is surpassed by the detail achieved with 0 gauge. The downside, maybe, is that an 0 gauge layout should attempt the same level of detail. Are you planning an 0 gauge layout sometime, Jen? As far as digital controllers are concerned, I would suggest, if you are visiting a reasonable size exhibition soon, ask any exhibitors who are displaying DCC layouts. They are usually more than happy to extol the virtues and vices of their particular set-up (they have probably tried a few before settling on the one they currently use).
Wow, the O gauge has taken the Duke to another level. What a beautiful engine. I only saw it once in BR service along the North Wales Coast. It must have been close to withdrawal because it was so dirty and it looked very neglected. It looked black in colour and I did not realise until I got home that it was really in green livery. The next time I saw it was on a visit to Barry scrapyard where it was so sadly stripped beyond recognition. I'm so glad it survived and made it back to working order again.
I don't think you should rush into buying a DCC control system. Shop around and find what suits you 👍 Model both 0 and 00. Both fab Worlds of models. Keep up the good work x
Both Dukes look great Jen but the detail on the 'O' gauge is incredible. I hope you get to identify the cause of little Dukes preference to leave the layout and hopefully share the cause with us. I look forward to seeing the new Eric when he arrives along side big Duke.
I have been using the Lenz set 100 for many years. You will need the Lenz TR150 transformer for O gauge. They’re not cheap but I find them a breeze to use unlike other makes that are a real faff.
I'm so looking forward to my Black 5 coming... I think it'll be a month of so yet before my one is in stock though... that's OK as I'm still recovering from Christmas. I have also gone for the sound version so it's going to be a BIG dent in the bank account 😂😂 I just use my Bachman dynamis system for all my scales! It has a switch for different voltages. It's an OK system but not amazing. I got it cheap enough that it is fine. I have used some of the HM7000 decoders though in my smaller O gauge locos ( a lionheart prairie and a dapol 08) and they work great 👍 neither loco pulls enough amps to worry the decoder, and those I drive on my phone. Easy way to have two people controlling locos on one layout 😊
That's very useful information may give that a try as I have some HM7000 decoders I got cheap form Hattons. I would say that the sound is good but not as refined as a ESU or zimo What is the power supply in the Bachmann controller? Is it just the basic kit? That's one of the things I love about CZcams most people will help each other out 👍
@@ollychap1985 yes true thr sounds isn't ss good as a premium decoder, but for the price it's excellent IMHO. The premium sound decoders are very expensive, and I can sound fit 3 locos for just one premium decoder. The class 08 sounds fine to me, and the generic profile works well enough with the Prairie. If you're a stickler for absolute fidelity thrn sure pay for the big money stuff, but compared to what was around when I was a teenager even the HM7000 is pretty astonishing. We are truly spoiled these days. I just have the standard Dynamis set up and it handles a couple of locos fine. I don't normally have more running at once than that anyway, but I think I could handle one or two small locos more or maybe 2 large diesels and a small loco without issue. I don't have space for long trains so 3 or 4 coaches are usual.
Ahh thank you for the information....sounds like it is an issue on them then. I will look into doing the same...thank you again for the info...much appreciated
0 Gauge is definitely the best for detail - providing you have a ton of space and buckets of dosh! Probably explains why I am going the other way at 70 years old and from 00 into N gauge!!!!!!
Duke of Gloucester is more like a work of art than a model, great stuff!...always try to have a straight going into a point not a curve, that should help. Love the o gauge stuff so much.
Thank you 💕 I think the Loco may have a design issue as hearing a few saying similar apparently....my other Loco's run around that area ok so wonder if it's true and there's a flaw
Shame if there is a flaw, hopefully easy to sort out, superb even with the design error. Also like your layout so far, trees are great and i like the farm idea..@@_j_loco_
a big Hello from the Netherlands. Driving years With German stuff O gauge last three years conversion to the British rail. Verry good DCC controller is the Lenz LZV 200. Or the new kid on the Block , the Lodi System. 6:37
Looks cracking - O Gauge is very addictive. I can recommend the Digitrax DCC system, you'll need a 3amp transformer too. I can also recommend Sunningwell Command Control - they've used and marketed Digitrax since the late 1990s or before. Good luck✌️💜👍😊
Both beautiful Jen. Yeah I don't use DCC. Surprised that you didn't have it. I like the antique trains. Well I can see that soon your whole house will be a 0 gauge. Glad I changed my name to Eric. I am a lot cheaper😂 Enjoy your weekend.
That is a good comparison i have never been shown this up until now. I always new 0 gauge was bigger but never knew it was that much bigger. Thanks for sharing. I've just started out again I'm 00 gauge thought that i would stick to what i know like. Love your track lay out and finally I've got to see how your track goes off to the engine shed and didn't know until Sunday's videos that it also goes to a blank tunnel and another track goes off to the right hand corner as well. I was going to do a depot layout but after seeing the work that you have put into your setup im now thinking of a layout in the spare room so i can have a bigger full circuit track with all the scenery and stuff and can even have a depot in there too. Seeing all the different layouts that the UK modelers have produced on CZcams it has been very educational and because it's a little bunch of people in to the same thing if you have a question ❓ and i am stuck with something if i ask something to my suprise i not only get an answer for it i also get the whole way i can do it this way that way you can do this you can do that and so on no trolling etc imagine someone trolling you and you build a section and wire it up do what they have told you to do and it ends up a big waste of money and time and nearly burned your property down that would be so hard to deal with and the worst thing about it that there is people out there and are willing to do that just for kick's it's disgraceful. In this hobby i have never come across any of yet it's a good close community and so helpful and for a total novice like myself you lot have shown me so much ❣️ love and been so so helpful to me instead of arh, he ain't a clue ain't got any time for him tell him to do that and he will f it up and lose interest and move on to something else to do we don't want people like that in our groups. So anyway a big thank you to all of you UK citizens for sticking with me I'm not trouble i only ask a question maybe 3 or 4 times a year but it is the response from all of you so happy and helpful to help me with problems that i have come across and all of the things that they have told me is all 100% accurate so I will not go on anymore just a massive thank you to all of you for the best help and advice means a lot so appreciated like have a great new year to all of you stay modelling folks!!!

Hi, I have an Z21 unit going spare as I don’t have Wi-Fi. It works well and is used via an app from phone or tablet. If interested I can post it to to you
Like others here I have the NCE system aswell. Mine's called the 5 amp Power Pro, bought it over 10 years ago. I don't know what's on offer now from NCE. I know you'll be dying to try out your new loco but I would first take the time to have a look at videos on CZcams of people comparing the different systems. There is also another system called TCS that is similar to NCE and I believe has the ability to work via WiFi, in other words your hand controller could be wireless, which could be very handy in the future, especially if you take your loco to an O gauge layout which is big. NCE also offer wireless hand controllers but I think they use radio waves and the US wave band is usually illegal to use in the UK. I'm not sure if I've got this information correct, I don't understand it fully myself, I'm just advising to have a little check on CZcams for comparisons first.
the 00 gauge model looks great but the 0 gauge looks amazing, I currently use the gaugemaster prodigey for my dcc, there are 2 new systems coming out soon from gaugemaster and bachmann so it may be worth waiting to see what there like as some of the older systems never seem to be in stock, i do find the gaugemaster prodigey easy to use and i can use all the functions, i was very tempted by the new bachmann system after speaking to one of the lads at warley showing how it works, but ill see what the difference is with the new gaugemaster, i do now the bachmann system looks to be closer to the shops
My advice would be to take your time and try a few controllers at the shops and shows I have an NCE power cab but it is a bit underpowered for 0-gauge Maybe something like the gaugemaster prodigy advance 2 or a ROCO Z21 Maybe talk to someone like Digitrains or coastal DCC You will like the sound it is good fun you will want to fit some of your 00 fleet next your two dukes are great.
