I think what the guy complaining about infection was saying was that the game should be more clear that you are dying from infection. So it should be saying things like "You collapse from nausea" for example and progressively get worse until you die

FF1 is probably my 3rd favorite FF game, not counting the Tactics series which would take 1-3 instead. The other two are FF5 and VII(which reuses a lot of 5's monsters, skills and spells if you pay close attention). The original FFT also has a lot of influence from V, and even lets you recruit some iconic monsters from that game for fun.

Plus, the thing is, all of the complaints read in this video are legitimate to have when you're new. They are all things even veteran players didn't understand and got frustrated by. and the "counter" arguments aren't reasonable because they take time and experimentation to figure out, if you ever figure them out. The counter arguments are just "lol skill issue".
On that note, he rips on people for having not played for very long, and it's like, yeah dude, not everyone is willing to be violated by dogs and guards in a game they've already decided they don't like until they're no longer allowed to refund it.

The depths of fear and hunger wouldn't feel as dark and oppressive without the odds being stacked against you. How would you even implement an easy mode to funger withour fundamentally changing the narrative and gameplay mechanics of the game.
Since ive personally likes sekiro as a game and played it A LOT, how would you put an easy mode without changing game mechanics? I dont have quick reaction time, but the way ive defeated certain amounts of bosses in that game has been memorizing attack patterns with beats in my heads to parry them. The gameplay experience then feels like a dance more than reactionary parrying. Slow down the gameplay and youd be reacting to the bosses attack more than learning the pattern, decrease damage and you have less incentive to memorize enemy patterns.
Pathologic is also something ive played a lot, the difficulty is part of the narrative and also is a way for players to use the mechanics of the game to stay on top. (Besides cheesing obviously) Bachelor having a less hard time but getting shit smacked in fighting would be accurate to the character. The herbal doctor being a but stronger but being pursued by the villagers in first half of game is part of the narrative beat and introduces new way to play the game.
With the two examples of the difficult games ive mentioned here, difficulty at least in those games fundamentally change how you play them. And game designers want you to play their games in a certain way, adding easy modes are a designers choice to mould your experience, just like making the game difficult is.

@@frapollo94 I went and watched it - honestly, the first half of that TheActMan video was just bs, the usual rant about how you should just get good and whatnot... And oh man, it was hard to keep interest in pushing through it to get to the actually sensible part of the video. That's probably why it's seen as such a toxic gatekeeping viewpoint in the first place, everyone seems to lead with that.
As a hobbyist dev myself, I know how much work it is to make games but that's literally where the actual problem ends. The only good reason to not make an easy mode to a game is that it's more work. It's a valid reason of course, and it's not like you'd need a reason in the first place because it's your game.
So yes, I agree that no game should BE FORCED to have an easier difficulty but to say it would make the game worse is just... Some sort of weird ego thing. As if the only way to enjoy a game is the way you yourself enjoy it. It seems like some kind of bitter entitlement thing to think that "nobody else should have it easy because I had it hard" - the same bs that boomers say to younger generations.

    • @Pawtacle
      @Pawtacle Před 9 měsíci

I agree with this to a certain extent - no matter how poorly made the easy mode is or if it completely changes the game's atmosphere, you can just choose to play on a harder difficulty...
...But there's a problem. Adding an easy mode would take resources off from other development which can be an issue especially for solo devs and smaller teams. Easy mode in itself is usually a good idea if you can spare some more time working on it but sometimes it's just not a viable option.

@@cpt.battlecock5264 there could be a lot of changes made to the game that wouldn’t subvert the intentional brutality of the game that could also make the game easier, better chances for better items when looting, easier access to lucky coins, maybe making it at least a little bit easier to save. Kind of like changes made in the same vein of “fear and hunger” mode compared to “terror and starvation.” But easier instead of harder, besides if resources were the main difference, being wasteful of resources would still punish players that aren’t careful. I think if fear and hunger wanted to have an easier difficulty, it could do that without sacrificing the narrative elements of its unapproachable mechanics.
Not that I think it *needs* to have one. Just that it could, and that wouldn’t necessarily be a big deal, besides if it did have a difficulty that made the game super easy, a tooltip could just be transparent and say that the intended difficulty is the fear and hunger and up difficulties and that players who choose the easy mode are not going to experience the story in the same way, I think really a lot of players would rather play the game balanced as it was intended, but it would make the game more accessible to players who don’t want to go through the mechanics as much, again it’s not that it *needs* to. I’m not for it having an easy mode, I just don’t think it needs to specifically not have one either.

Thing with Funger is that if you don't know what you're getting into it will seem unfair and RNG at first glance, and if you think the game sucks from that first glance you won't necessarily want to meet it on its own terms.
It's also not that surprising that people who can't interact with the game in a meaningful way will come away with false information. If you save at the Crow Mauler bed, then try to save again, you might come to the idea that it's a limit of one save per bed instead of what it actually is (coin flip to see if the game checks for a valid encounter to spawn immediately after you wake up).

As someone who likes to play "difficult games" I got to admit that Fear and Hunger has to be one of fairest of those I played so far. What I mean by that, is the fact that game has very little skill based mechanics, you don't need to improve your timings or other mechanics like in Dark Souls, you don't really need that advanced strategies with like 3 possible backups, on what to do if you miss or enbemy crits like in Darkest Dungeon. All you have to do is simply learn the basic patterns of game. Idk maybe those people came to this game thinking they are going to collect candies or blitz through dungeon like in JRPG, but I came in prepared that it's going to be difficult game, so I steered away from some encounters, I knew that I will be dying. Still I learned and I realized that game is like many games, it gets easy once you realize how it works. Same can't be said about Dark Souls or Darkest Dungeon, because there you still got to have decent mechanics and there is RNG (about darkest dungeon specifically), I don't think those games are bad in any way, t hey are actually difficult games. While fear and hunger is typical, "learn it till you make it" game, even in very easy games people can get stuck on some puzzle you just don't understand. So to sum up people who make reviews like that. Question yourself you might learn.

Man, it feels like people who refuse to explore are always keen on complaining about info not getting to them served on a plate (my friend dropped DS1 because the game doesn't tell you the lore and makes you READ it lmaoooo)
Even it my first playthrough I was able to understand that you probably shouldn't fight the dogs or pull out that sword out of the stone (the game even suggests that you probably shouldn't do that), because it's just common sense!
Yes, death surprises are very present in the game and I remember getting angry and upset because of dying a lot too, but looking back at it, it was a very fun experience and I think that exploring is what really makes it up for this game

I'll try to cope for some of these reviewers and explain what I think they were trying to say w/ some of the weird stuff in their reviews.
For the Review at 4:55, when he said it never tells you that "You're getting feverish", I think the reviewer is saying that they wished the pop-up saying they had an infection was a lot more noticeable and prominent. They wish there was a big pop-up saying "You're getting feverish" or "You're close to collapsing from Nausea" instead of what we have now.
For the Review at 7:44, I think the "RNG level up system" he's talking about is the soul-stone skill system, I still don't really get how he think's it's RNG but like... at least that makes a little bit of sense lmao.
PS: As for an actual easy mode for F&H, I understand that a lot of people would see it as ruining the essence game but I mean like you wouldn't have to play it so It's not an overtly bad idea to get more players into the community. It could very well work in the opposite of how you explain it, someone could potentially progressively makes the game harder on themselves by increasing difficulty modes instead of making it easier through gaining knowledge. I think it all depends on what you want out of your gameplay experience. That being said though, there isn't any real NEED for a difficulty mode like that. The game is perfectly good the way it is and if you don't like it, that's on you lol.

I think the only real issue I've had with Fear and Hunger are some of the bugs.
It was very apparent though that this games vision was to be about trial and error with the unknown.
While other games have all of the statuses listed in the manual, this game would have suffered from it as it's trying to craft a particular experience.
You're very right that it's not going to be for everyone, but I think more people should give it a try (without any help/spoilers from guides) because it's an experience you don't get from a lot of games.

Finally, another use for the rock in my kitchen! :D
While I do understand the complaints about the lack of accessibility, I do agree that this game is absolutely catering to a specific target audience and implementing accessibility would most likely change the game at its core.
Also maybe it's just me, but I think a lot of these complaints and reviews wouldn't have been written in the first place if the people who wrote them did some research beforehand.
I personally don't buy games unless one of my friends recommended it to me, I played it myself before or I watched videos or a playthrough of it and liked it.
That way I at least have some baseline knowledge or someone with more hours in the game to talk to in case I have any questions.
It's a way to avoid immediate rage quits, wasting money and maybe you end up finding games or franchises that are interesting but maybe not your cup of tea entirely - In my case I don't exactly like horror games, so instead of playing things like FNAF, Chilla's Art Games, Dredge or Signalis, I can watch streamers do it and potentially search for lore or explanation videos online if I crave more content and insight into the games.

You know what, that's fair xD
I'm pretty sure a lot of people wouldn't dream of going with such an approach because they absolutely do not want to see spoilers and experience the game as is.
Honestly the only thing in terms of 'accessibility' I can think of is offering a short spoiler-free video on the type of games Fear & Hunger and Termina are.
By that I don't mean explaining the combat system or status inflictions or anything, but the fact that it is a 'fuck around and find out that's what makes it fun'-type of game.
F.e. mentioning that some encounters are meant to teach the players lessons, the game doesn't give as much insight into certain mechanics on purpose, it's something you're supposed to gain mastery by yourself.
I don't know if such a video exists yet, but it might at least prevent some people to get into the game with misplaced expectations and then rant about their misery in the reviews.
