I love the warp speed Marzipan😂👌
The first year in Nutcracker I was twelve and an angel and nobody told us that the stage would be covered in fog and that there would a girl flying over us, so I couldn't see a thing and I completely crashed with two other people and fell flat on my face and slid halfway down the stage, it was so bad XD
omg lol
when I was a little angel like five girls were coughing like crazy bc of the fog 😆
I was an angel twice... there wasn’t any fog for me tho lol
Here's one. This didn't happen to me, thankfully, but it's hilarious. The girls are dancing Snow in Nutcracker and the snow is coming down from above, and what comes down with the snow but a dead cockroach. A BIG one. Can you imagine?!! Being onstage and performing and seeing a giant roach come down with the snow?! How does anyone hold it together when that happens?!?
Oh my gosh, that must have been terrifying
Linda Harrison wow.
I do Nutcracker and we have a tradition where dancers give each other leg warmers/socks and the snow queen was wearing peppermint stripe fuzzy leg warmers backstage, and she forgot to take them off when she went on!!! It was sooooooo funny and everyone in the audience was like WHAT??? Anyway, nice video.
I had to make up a solo once! I got onstage and about 8 counts into my routine, that *I* choreographed myself and had practiced so much that my parents even knew it front to back, I BLANKED completely. I was mortified and somehow kept from just running off stage and instead I winged it. It was all off the top of my head. Crazy thing was, it wound up being really good and my instructor was not angry at all...my parents were baffled, though!
wow that is a scary feeling
You should write a book. I just love backstage at the ballet books. When I was ballroom dancing I blanketed out during a mambo when we were doing separate moves. I still have nightmares about blanking out.
One time I was changing on stage, and I was like rushing to stay with the music, and I came out wearing it inside out, it was a butterfly costume!!!
I wish with every fiber of my being - that somewhere there is a video of you doing marzipan at warp speed 😂 some joy to the world 😅
Ok so here's one. I was doing a Kitri variation and I dropped my fan. I had to do it without and sort of pick it up at the end. Mortifying!
Its just so comforting to know that every dancer, even the amazing ones like you, have those "Oh crap, I did NOT just-!" moments. Love how you let us in on your experiences. Keep up the good work!
It was dress rehearsal and it was the snow scene, one of the snow machines broke and dumped all on a girl and she hit the floor because of the amount of snow! It was hilarious!
Once during my studios spring show, I was in a dance where you had to run out as soon as you heard the music, which was stressful enough in rehearsal, let alone on stage. So, my groups in the wings waiting to go on, and apparently the group before us was very good, so the audience clapped pretty loudly. So loud, that we couldn't hear the first note of the music. By now my group is mildly freaking out and pushing the people in front of them to go. So we get on stage about 2 eights late and half the group is starting the dance from the beginning and speed dancing it, while the other half is picking up where the music's at. Anyway it was a mess
Dakota J-L that happened to me except it was only me and one other girl
Well that's on the conductor for not waiting for the applause to die down
This makes me feel better about my moments of blankouts. I had that happened to me while I was an Irish step dancer.
Me too😂😂😂during competition but I revived and got 1st place
Congrats. It's such an out of body experience.
Same here. Don't I know those blankouts...
Luckily I'm doing flamenco and our performances are usually all solos plus we're trained to improvise so at least it's not like you're one in a group of dancers doing something completely different than the rest... But damn, sometimes it really does feel like an out of body experience.
Katrina Bodoh I’ve done that as well. Then seeing a placement it’s like wooo how is that possible, but I’ll take it.
I blanked so bad during a performance one time for school. It was a performance for the alumni so there were only about 20 people in the audience I was front and center in the dance, there were only 5 of us dancing and I completely blanked out I had no idea what was happening. I tried to get back into it it but I couldn't and I was standing there confused for a solid 10 seconds. After the performance one of the teachers came up to me laughing (this was a very informal performance and it was her class that was visiting) and said "Norman (another teacher) and I were gasping like 'Maddie Schmidt never messes up what is happening!!'" It was funny to everyone else but I was mortified because it was in front of a group of dancers and actors who defiantly noticed even though my teacher was saying the only reason she noticed is because she's seen the dance a million times. I literally stood in the middle of the stage looking around like a confused idiot for 10 seconds everyone defiantly noticed. I laugh about it now but I was so mad for months.
LOL I can't believe you actually improvised two eighths of a routine! That must have been pretty cool for the audience, a totally unique performance!
My studio did Alice in Wonderland... I was the back of the caterpillar... And a bush from the set fell on me... One of the backstage moms had to reach THROUGH the backdrop and pull it off of me.. To make things worse, it had a CINDER BLOCK attached to it.
My first year in Nutcracker I was an angel and during part of the dance Clara and The Nutcracker fly over us in a hot air balloon. For some reason, I looked up, saw the balloon and blanked out on the choreography. It took me about 10 seconds to remember where I was and what I was doing.
During that same dance my angel wings somehow got unsnapped from my dress so when we turned around so the audience could see them, all they saw were droopy wings. So embarrassing 😫
I blanked in a solo in an exam last month! I was a nervous mess, I had also accidently done a different grades fondu exercise, but did the correct one on the second side. Thankfully I got a distinction despite it all.
Last year I took my first adult beginner class at my college and had a really fun teacher who choreographed a routine to Bittersweet symphony by the Verve. Leading up to our performance I had gone from relatively decent to "why am I falling out of absolutely everything?" So I was fairly nervous, but at least I knew the choreography! Well, in our final performance, I managed to make a mistake that I had never made before--in a sequence where all 9 girls were in a straight line doing the exact same footwork--I spaced and skipped ahead two steps! It was completely obvious I made a mistake but I just smiled really big and kept on going with everyone else and even managed to do the rest of the dance better than I had ever done it! Still ridiculously embarrassing though...
I had to do this one move where me and another girl had to hold arms, lean away from each other, and turn around. Well she tripped and since we where turning she flew farrrr to the ground. I'm 16, this girl was like 10. Very big size difference. It had looked like I had thrown her! We preform two days, but only one of the days do they record for the cds. That happened to be the day they recorded -.- you can see the shock in my face as I jump to my next position and guiltily continue dancing. I felt so bad! It even felt like I had thrown her since we had to pull on each other a bit, but later reviewing it I see where she had tripped.I would have rather fallen myself then have to have people making jokes about me throwing a girl on the stage for weeks!
I really relate to the falling out of nowhere! lol!
I cant explain how often while standing I just 'plop' and im on the floor!
Oooh, can you do a day in the life video, it would be the best!!
You really helped me with this video. I just felt really low about myself lately, I am quite a perfectionist and so tired of being like that. Sometimes when you are in that mood you think that is only you who make mistakes but your stories where very helpful, reminded me that little occasional mistakes don't define you, that the most important thing is to move on from that, to not get stuck on those mistakes, they really are just good stories to laugh about later😉💛
Love the background!
Right? Very vintage princessy
hahaha I love the last one!😂 And yes, I found a video of Balanchine's Marzipan and its so difficult, I don't even know how you guys do it lol.
In my performance history, I've dropped my fan, got my fan entangled in my costume, stepped on a friend's costume, slid across the stage whilst running due to the really slippery stage and I'm sure there's alot more haha. It really happens to everyone, sadly, but its still really funny when you look back on it!
Once I had a quick change between tap shoes and jazz shoes and I couldn’t find my jazz shoes so I did a jazz dance and luckily I was wearing black socks so you couldn’t see my tights before the ballet piece but I nearly fell like 5 times
I looked up Balanchine's Marzipan and I laughed a lot picturing it that fast and was also amazed that you managed to dance it.
i cant even describe how happy i am i found your channel. i especially love the elegant beauty and design.
Ohhh I have so many.
1) I was in the Marzipan corps, and all dancers had to wear socks in the dressing room areas to keep the wax from the floors from getting onto the stage. Well, I forgot to take off my socks until .5 seconds before our finale entrance... I got one off, but had to leave one on (they were white so they didn't show that much), and I slipped and almost crashed into the Arabian dancers.... it was mortifying. And hilarious.
2) I blanked during snow my first year. I was in a small ballet school and the youngest and lowest level dancer in Snow. I had to lead in a line of snowflakes in grand jetes near the end, and I forgot EVERYTHING. What role I was doing, where I was, what wing to come out of, what leg to start on. I panicked and whisper-screamed "WHAT DO I DO?" to everyone in the near vicinity. Somehow my brain switched back on before our entrance. I was 12 and really desperate to seem like I was capable of this, so I felt dumb LOL.
3) This was in dress rehearsal, thank goodness. I was performing the Lion solo in Carnival of the Animals, and I was supposed to end in fouettes at center stage. The flooring cleverly disguised the multiple trapdoors on the stage..... I misjudged my mark, my pointe shoe platform hit the end of the trapdoor, and I went DOWN. The BOOM echoed for like a full minute. I ended up changing the choreography (with permission) because I was so scared of doing that again. My left knee was completely black and blue for a whole week.
4) Also Marzipan corps (that was just a bad role lol): I had a stomach virus the morning of our final show, but I refused to miss it since I had 3 roles to perform instead of my usual two, and my alternate for Toy Soldier was playing her only show as Clara, so I had no alternate. I figured that I might as well just do the whole show if I could. I was so nervous that my illness would slow me up or I'd miss an entrance or something that I stepped too far into the wing and was 100% fully visible to the audience during the last minute of Mother Ginger.
1, 2, and 4 were all the same Nutcracker season . . . it was a run haha.
Awesome video! I love the "behind the scenes" videos of professional dancers. Looking forward to seeing/hearing more and also getting to know more about your dance history and seeing old videos!
Also always love to hear about dance bloopers of professionals. It's very reassuring somehow to hear that it can happen to the pros as well.
I remember when I had my first "real" performance (I'm a hobby flamenco dancer) and felt totally underprepared. My teacher and another dancer whom the two of us were performing with started to share all their silly mishaps (from shawls getting stuck in the guitar of the guitar player to fans flying out into the audience to shoes breaking...). We had such a blast that all the nerves were forgotten about. ;)
0:40 everybody makes mistakes... everybody has those days
It's not ballet but I was in a play and all I had to do was act a scene and then throw a boot into the wing and someone I managed to throw it hard at someone sitting in the wings and they just about managed not to scream. Whoops!
Oh my gosh same!!! It wasn't me but one of the actors, i was stage magager in a production of oh what a lovely war and in the Christmas scene in rehearsal he threw the boot into the audience and everyone was like.... eh, you know you can't do that right? Lol, it'd be crazy if that happened to you to, was it oh what a lovely war you were in?
The dancer in Coppelia in the picture, Mara Vinson is the co director of my ballet school, Olympic Ballet School!
My dance studio in high school did a peter pan production one year for the holidays (I think the instructors just really needed a break from nutcracker that year). We were in a northern state and snow got under the stage roof somehow. And melted. Not enough to be super dangerous, but it dripped on the dancers all performance weekend. Very, very distracting.
Omg blanking out would be my biggest fear!!!!!!
I have one:
Played an angel at age 9. We had a guest artist come play the Sugar Plum Fairy from Houston Ballet, but her flight was delayed so she didn’t come to rehearsal. Usually there’s maybe 12 angels that cross when the Sugar Plum Fairy gestures to them, but we were a bigger group of 20 so not all of us didn’t get to change sides. My mom has it on video. Thank goodness we didn’t do it at the evening show.
I feel you on the whole blanking out thing that happened to you in the 4 T's... That exact thing happened to me when I was performing some original choreography one time, and I happened to be a soloist🙃 It was for like 3 seconds because I looked at the other soloist girl, and my memory all of a sudden came back after seeing what she was doing.. It is the scariest situation because you feel so out of control haha🙃 😓 😳
I was in Nutcracker during our 2017-2018 Season (We're rehearsing for Sleeping Beauty, I'm Aurora), and I was dancing the "Arabian Coffee" Pas De Deux. What was supposed to happen was my parter lifted me, I did a back-bend, then he brought me back down. But what happened was when it was time for the lift, I went forward and did a jete and then I stopped on stage and stood in shock for about 2 seconds and realized "Oh my God, THAT WAS THE WRONG STEP!". So I did another jete back toward him and we did the lift 😂😂😂
she is adorable!
Once I was in sleeping beauty and the front of my costume just started to fall of it was so embarrassing and when I was in swan lake and I had an apron on the front of my costume and it started to fall off and I was too young to remember to leave it alone but I put it back on and it just fell of again
Snow... this snow... The freaking Nutcracker snow🤣
i loved this! please do "a day in the life" video! that would be so awesome (:
THERE SHOULD BE AN INSTA STORY BINGO FOR PERFORMANCE MISHAPS!! It would be so funny to see what others have unfortunately encountered on stage as well 😂
My class was really early in our music, and we were all just standing there.
I’ve got a few Nutcracker bloopers but the most memorable one was an orchestral blooper back when we had a live orchestra in our production. In the dance following the march in the party scene, there’s a brief phrase of music within it that the orchestra for whatever reason during a performance repeated twice as a vamp. This was one of our middle performances, they had never done that before and we all internally freaked for a second. Thankfully, what we were doing onstage was just chassés in a circle holding hands, so all us party guests just looked at each other and we knew what to do - we just did an extra rotation around the circle and went on as normal and the orchestral was back to normal as well. I never found out what happened in that situation with the orchestra and conductor, it was super weird for us to hear that music twice, but we handled it well and I’m sure the audience didn’t notice unless they knew the score and our choreo 😂 I’ve also been in the situation where new conductors play music at warp speed and there’s not much you can do about it, but I’m also an opera singer and musical theatre actress and in those situations with vocal music and theatre, we usually are able to have some more communication with the conductor and cue them to slow it down a bit based on our tempo and glances down to the pit. It doesn’t always go perfectly to plan, but at least there’s a way to let them know to slow it down lol
I am not a ballet dancer but I did dance other styles. I was part of a Notre Dame de Paris musical and we had to change extremely fast from ball gowns to another costume that included pants and a top as well as wipe of makeup and smear it on my face and mess my hair, we literally had 10 seconds as it was between two songs, so I came back running to the stage as dast as I could, last thing you know one pair of my havaianas flies from my foot onto the stage so the whole time I was dancing and looking at it horrified, as soon as the lights went off I grabbed that thing and left the stage XD
please make a Video about tipps for Arabesques!
Two years ago my company got an opportunity to dance at Tom Wopat's (from Dukes of Hazzard) benefit concert and the band that was playing played so fast that it took 2 minutes to do a normally 4 minute dance. Our teacher was cracking up so much especially since the dance was already very fast.
Love you so much Kathryn! We all make mistakes, but yours just happen to be especially hilarious lol
If anyone wants to see the Balanchine marzipan, there is a version that's survived on youtube so far despite the Trust: czcams.com/video/Oabb5Wvg7ws/video.html You can see it's lightning fast and articulated as it is.
PS the Jeu de Cartes story is priceless!!!
This is not the most horrific story so i was in the nutcracker dancing as a Candy Cane corp and we were bowing and one of the girls in front of me bent over and her belt fell of and so then we need to run off stage and i was the last to run off so when i ran off i had to kick the belt into the wing and it hit the ballet master right in the face and when i went off stage we both started silently laughing because i looked so weird kicking a belt across the stage into the wing 😂
My nutcracker are the three days after thanksgiving I have seven shows and I'm super excited
This was a great video! It was so helpful to hear that even professionals make mistakes, and somehow I'm not so nervous about this sunday's performance. Thank you, Katie! I loved this video! :D
I wonder what it is about snow scene and pens? Last year in our production there was a pen lying in the middle of the stage (and the curtain I went in and out of) so one of the backstage dads had my kick it off the stage! Such a great video. :)
@Kathryn Morgan
I really love your videos.. :) I'm from the Philippines, and I'm not really from a huge dance company or something, just a local ballet school (which is awesome and I totally respect the quality and the teaching), but ballet has always been my passion. I remember first blankout moment. I was a bit new and haven't been dancing very long (about one year), so I was still kind of trying to find my place in the group and trying very hard not to mess up. We had this recital (my third or fourth, I think), which we've rehearsed and danced a lot of times. On the day of our performance, everything went pretty smoothly, then suddenly, when I was in the middle of the dance, I just forgot about what I was doing and had no idea where I was. It was kind of hazy and I can't remember much, but I think I just followed the others and walked back to my spot! LOL.. Surprisingly, my teacher didn't say anything. I'm not sure if he noticed it, but it was pretty embarrasing... and hilarious.. haha..
So funny and terrifying! I once fell center stage in a chorus line! I was the girl who dead center in the line. The heel of my character shoe caught my costume and down I went.
I knew when you said Guest Conductor, LOL
😂😂😂💖💖💖
Kudos for the effort!
i once blanked in the middle of a presentation in university. mid speech my mind froze, my brain stopped working, and i went silent. i have never been so mortified in my life. i also have social anxiety so that didn't make it any better. i didn't even try to finish, i think i completed the sentence i was on, politely ended the speech in the best way i could manage, gathered my things, and took my seat all at lightening speed.
look forward to the warm-up
heehehe >___< thats too funny, I bet you wanted that dance of the cardgame to be over, though I have blanked out during a skit in front of 500 people 2 times, its not fun messing up, unless you are just on stage getting to goof around, and ad lib it, but that is how I dance its hip hop, depending how the music moves you most of it is on the fly for me, but for a skit there is usually something I want to incorporate to show the audiance, and then I forget lol
Not a dance story, but in my last year of high school, I went to New Orleans on a weeklong concert tour with the school band, and we played an outdoor concert at the French Quarter one day. It was sunny and nice out, but very windy, so we had to duct-tape our (flimsy, folding) music stands to the pavement, and then attach our music to our stands with clothespins. It still wasn't enough, and I ended up having to chase my music down the sidewalk seconds before having to play a (fortunately small) solo. How I made it, I still don't know.
I've got a corps filling role for don Quixote so this is freaking me out why the hell am I watching this😂
At last years dance recital during my tap routine I was doing a buffalo turn and on my shuffle my shoe slipped from under me and I completely whipped out causing me to get completely turned around and forget my routine. I couldn’t even make it up as I was a group dance so I just had to look at what everyone else was doing and it was just a sloppy mess😂
I danced in Cinderella 2 years ago, when I was 10, and I was a servant at the party with other girls. And one girl's shoe slipped off in the middle of the dance so she couldn't do the jumps and she looked hilarious! And then I slipped and fell face first on the ground and I was sooo embarrassed! We all agreed it was the worst performance ever...
You look especially stunning in this video!
This was uploaded on my birthday!! 😍😍
For one of my performances at my old studio, I was front and center stage. I was basically DEAD that day because we had been having rehearsals all week and it was the last show. Middle of the performance, I forgot everything. Since I was only 10, I just kind of stood there, staring at the audience. It was horrifying. Thankfully I WAS only 10 then, though, because that would've been WAY worse now!
I loved this video! Thanks for sharing :)
This was so fun!
During my recital, the stage wasn't prepped correctly and it was super slippery. I ran forward with the rest of my class for the curtsy at the end of the dance, hit a slippery spot, fell on my butt while everyone else curtsied, pulled myself up, and stumbled back. It wasn't graceful.
Oh lol
Once in the nutcracker I was in Chinese and there was this part where I slid under the legs of a girl and me being completely stupid wore my glasses because they haven't been giving me problems. Well as soon as I dived under my glasses flew off and slid into the audience. I then switched to contacts.
Love your videos 😍 What is the most affective way to practise ballet in a small place (I.e in a bedroom) x
For some reason the only time I ever fall, wether in a company audition, normal class, or a show, it’s always choreographed by the same teacher.
I was singing for a wake, only about 30 people, but I blanked in the middle of a song. It ended up just being a ling pause thank God! 😬
Ahah that was interesting and funny :p love you xxxx
I don't dance but i do drama. I had the flu during our final performance, which is about 2 hours long. I forgot one of my lines so i Walked off and i said to everyone like oh i forgot my lines etc... but my mic was still on so EVERYONE heard except for US backstage. Then the sound Guy was like yeah that was you
Can you please make a new one? I love your videos and they have really helped me. I really enjoy these ones though!
its funny, I'm not a dancer, but I can relate to the blankouts..... I am a rider, and sometimes when I'm jumping a course, I totally forget the pattern and order of the jumps, strides in between, and whether or not I am trotting or cantering the last stretch.😐😶😮😦😲
Dark Sky I'm a dancer and a rider and omg I feel you I've done that so many times!!!
jessica simmons 😁😁😁😁 frustrating, nerve wracking AND unexplainable all at the same time, right?! glad I'm not alone!
Dark Sky same!!!!
yesterday I blanked out on of my lines even though I've been rehearsing them for ACTUALLY months ughhhhh it was awfulllll
Went to NYCB Nutcracker last night...was thinking about you...how do you dance on that snow.....looks impossible....
6:20 MARAAAAAAAAA
Haha ahw thanks for sharing, that was funny :)
I told my boss who teaches dance that I soak gummy bears and coke bottle gummies in rum and she says maybe don't do ballet after then..., lol I sent her a pic of me in leotard tights and a bike helmet lol
Kathryn has a Gracie Allenist charm about her
What age did you start doing pointe?
lol! So cute!
Gah I've blanked before and to me, it's one of the worst feelings ever. /:
I know how you feel
One time during a jazz dance I accidentally kicked my friend on stage. That dance was also just really bad in general
XD
what does core mean???
The Corps is comprised of ballet dancers that perform as a group.
do i need to pay to take those classes with you?
Anyone else read it as mish-aps? 😂
