Minolta Lenses on Sony A and E Mount (with LA-EA4 adapter) Sample Images

  • I've received a number of requests for a video highlighting my collection of vintage Minolta lenses. As you may know, the Minolta Maxxum mount is the same as the Sony A mount, meaning all of these lenses can be used on any camera body which supports either of those mounts. However, these Minolta lenses can also be used on your Sony E Mount camera with the use of an adapter such as the LA-EA4.
    I included a number of sample images in the video and I'm sure you'll agree that these lenses are a great bargain and produce fantastic images for those of you on a budget or if you just want to use some of these awesome vintage lenses.
    In this video:

    Recently switched from Canon DSLR to Sony Mirrorless system. Due to the High price of Sony FE lenses I was looking for cheaper options and purchased the Minolta 70-210mm F4 AF for just AU$80 online and the Sony LA-EA4 Adapter yesterday. Your video has so much information about the vast range of Minolta lenses. Hats off to you. Thank you so much...Look forward to see more videos like this....... God bless you....

      Hi, how does the Sony LA-EA4 Adapter work? Does it hold to its' promises? I own a Canon FE - E Mount adapter which is lousy on Autofocus. Super slow and inprecise on my Canon FE 28-80 and 100% erratic on my Canon FE 50mm 1,8 lens when adapted to my Sony A7II. So I'm kind of suspicious about adapters of this kind.

    Extremely helpful as I have a SONY A99ii and a new SONY A7riii...just purchased the LA-EA4 adapter and can't wait to play! I have some vintage lenses from Minolta as well as Pentax. I also bought a Pentax adapter. I love being a hobbyist without spending a ton of money on gear.

    Totally agree that these Minolta lenses are hard to beat. I use a Sony A850 and an SLT-68. I have not gone for the 70-210 though, as I have the 35-105 (mki) and a 100-200 f4.5, which I find along with primes of 28mm f2.8 and 50mm f1.4 covers all bases. I also have a Sony 85mm f2.8 for portraits. If you want to go even cheaper there are a lot of older M42 lenses out there that also work well with Sony bodies. Happy shooting.

    Thank you for this! I have a bunch of great old Minolta lenses (including that great 135mm f/2.8 -- my go to hiking with dogs lens!) and am still shooting with an a77ii, but I know sometime I may need to make a switch. Can you speak at all to the fps on the 6300 with the adapter? Did it slow you down significantly or did you still get a decent fps? I shoot a lot of action (fast moving dogs) and I'm worried it's going to be exceedingly limited. The a77ii is usually around 8fps, so I'm dreading that it's going to be super slow!

    I have just bought a Samyang (Rokinon) 35mm T1.5 Cine Lens for a really low price, but it is A-Mount. I have the A7II and consequently the lens doesn't fit. Would you suggest the adapter for cinema style shooting? The lens already is quite big, even though the E-Mount version extends quite a bit further as well, I assume the E Mount needs the extra space.

    Minolta had introduced α-mount lenses with motorized power zoom. Thes series of lenses were named: xi
    xi α-mount lenses are not compatible with Sony α-mount to e-mount adapters for Sony e-mount cameras.
    xi α-mount lenses don't have exactly the same electronic contacts as other α-mount lenses.

    I have the former LA-EA4 and the truth is that its autofocus performance is below average with Minolta or Sony a-mount lenses. However the new LA-EA5 on the Sony a7R IV is phenomenal with screw driven a-mount lenses.
    Very few know that early Sony a-mount lens are exact copies of Minolta ones. Minolta a-mount lenses can be found mostly from Japanese eBay in mint condition and at bargain prices. Many Canon and Nikon lenses for dSLR cameras that are sold now as new were introduced the same period of the Minolta a-mount lenses or the period of Sony lens copies of Minolta lenses.
    Minolta a-mount lenses that were introduced during late 90's until 2005 are very underestimated and are an excellent affordable choice.
    Also the truth is that the early Minolta a-mount lenses of 80's aren't so good but nearly all of them were updated after mid 90's by Minolta.

    If you want an AF A-mount for portraits, lookup the Minolta AF 100mm f2. It's the best portrait lens for the A-mount. Sharp wide open, relatively fast and excellent bokeh. BTW, I have the 50/1.7, 50/1.4, 135 STF (best portrait lens, manual focus though), sold the 85/1.4 (not sharp wide open, stopped down you don't get perfectly round bokeh balls. The 100mm was in such demand back in the mid to late 2000's, it was going for just under $1000 or so used. With demand dwindling, you can get it for about $350 or less. My favorite lens for the A-mount.

I bought the Minolta 100-200 f4.5 and the Minolta 70-210 f4.5 and the Minolta 70-300 "Big beer can" is on the way. All together I payed under $200 for those three lens. If you add that to the cost of the adapter it is still cheaper than the 70-300mm Sony charges $1100 for. When taking videos some of these Minolta lenses can be very noisy when the focus motor operates. They used 3 types of focus motors that I know of.
    Also the Maxxum was an APC sensor camera. If you put these lenses on a full frame sensor camera, you will not be happy. The "A" mount lenses were made both for APC and full frame. If you use a full frame lens on an APC camera, the image will be larger than the sensor, so the lens will operate as a longer lens. If you use an APC lens on a full frame camera, the image will not cover the sensor. If the lens says Minolta without Maxxum, it is full frame.

      Buy the adapter you need on aliexpress, they are usually 2 to 10e but they are fully manual. As for Minolta zooms, I would not spend 80e for them, 20e at max, zooms from that time are really cheap if you look careful on ebay

    Do you still use the A99 and/or the LA-EA4?

      Yes, I use both. But not together obviously. That wouldn't work LOL. Why?

    Its my understanding from two independent published sources that Sony A mount lenses can be mounted directly on the Sony E mount A7/A7II without any adapter and that the auto focus will work fine thought not quite as fast as with the adapter. Have you heard about this or ever tried it? Thanks

    • @HeyDontShoot
      @HeyDontShoot  Před 5 lety +1

      A mount glass will not fit onto the E mount.

      @@HeyDontShoot Why? Are they mechanically not match? Sony A mount lenses mounted directly on the Sony E mount? Or is the only electronics problem?

    • @GrandmasterBBC
      @GrandmasterBBC Před 4 lety

      @@MV-ky5uo It's a completely different mount. You cannot physically attach an a-mount lens to an e-mount body without an adapter. It would be like trying to mount a Nikon lens directly onto a Canon camera. It doesn't work.

      Fans and subscribers of this channel know that the name has a double meaning and was termed during our deployment near the Korean demilitarized zone. Hey Don't Shoot (North Korean soldiers) because we will have to shoot back AND Hey Don't Shoot, because you suck at photography.
