  • Matchman Dave Roberts from Bury Hill Fisheries tells you his way to catch more fish, by showing you how to hook maggots in order to give them the most "wiggle factor". When those fish are being ultra-cautious, it can make the difference in your catch rate. Even the smallest of fishing tips can often put that bend in your rod!!

    Thanks Dave, thorough as always. These simple videos are really helpful to me as I am new to freshwater fishing, maggots and tiny hooks. Nothing coming out of the sea around here so looking forward to the season opening. Be nice to catch something even if it's not for tea.

    I have never fished either fresh water or with maggots. This said, I was wondering whether maggots would be any good for salt water mini species?.......

    • @TAFishing
      @TAFishing  Před 8 lety

      They are used for mullet fishing.Generally in shallow water during the summer when flies are laying their eggs on rotting seaweed.But they might work for mini species from a pier.

      Know what you mean,but I just walk through the tackle shop door and film Dave where he serves.Would like radio mikes but they are expensive and not something we could really justify as its all one-way traffic at present anyway.We use a Rycote Lyre mount softie with windshield,but clipped on.Might be better hand held on the lyre mount and use it directionally. And the tackle shop always has freezers and chiller motors running anyway.

    Can you do a video on how to hook bread?

    • @MrJackAttack-pl9hp
      @MrJackAttack-pl9hp Před 8 lety +2

      What works for me is when I flatten a white strip of bread I tore off and push it together so it's compressed in a strip then stick a size 16 hook at one side and role the strip on bread tight just above the hook and press it on then push it down at the hook side so it doesn't block the hook works for me

      @MrBlackChar01 Před 8 lety

      I usually cut the crust off off bread and then add a little bit of water to moist it ,and then start presing it and adding a bit of water at the same time until it has the same consistency as clay.After i finish making it i also mix it with some chocolate powder for milk (Nesquik) to add a little bit of flavour.It works well for small carp and crucian carp.

    • @MrJackAttack-pl9hp
      @MrJackAttack-pl9hp Před 8 lety

      +MrBlack Char also good to invest in some small clear elastic bands to stick on your hook so the bread is dangling below the hook it stays on longer and keeps the hook fully clear

      I have never seen a maggot bleed ? If you mean when it bursts,just use a fresh one.maybe you hook is not sharp,or the maggots are small.

    • @TAFishing
      @TAFishing  Před 2 lety +1

      They just eat rotten meat and then turn into flies,lay eggs and the process starts over again. I believe they are still used in certain medical circumstances to eat rotting flesh like Gangrene ??....

    Hi Gaeme/ Mike,
    ESCAPE FROM SKYE.
    Well guys this will be a very long message but may help your viewers too.
    My advice is dont go to Skye Fishing.
    I arrived in Kyle of Lochalsh Tuesday night in the Van. I parked up and got Fish and Chips to eat after a 4.5 hour drive.
    The worst ever. The Fish was Findus Frozen type and the Chips were innedible. I fed the fish ? to a Gull. Well he didnt even touch the chips. Honest Graeme im not lying.
    I Fished off the Harbour wall and caught 2 Pollock but was eaten alive with Midges. Even the Fishermen commented on how bad they were.
    They landed fantastic Langoustines from far out to sea.
    I slept in the van but again got eaten alive. 2 hours sleep.
    Very early hours i drove over the Skye Bridge and went South to Elgol. Caught nothing and again got eaten alive, you couldnt function for Midges all over you. Lost lures too in snag city.
    I then drove North in stiffeling heat to a Campsite in Dunvegan as i needed a shower badly.
    What a strange bunch there. I dont mean the locals but the Caravaners and Tent folk were weird. No one talked to each other and the atmosphere was very strange. I paid £8 for the night and had a shower and a shave. This was much needed.
    Within hours i decided id had enough and at 10 pm i packed up. The most ive ever paid for a shower. and drove nearly 6 hours home.
    I became unwell when i returned home which involved passing Blood, and you know what guys i really appreciated home comforts. I do get episodes of this from time to time but i think the exhaustion of driving endlessly along single roads with Sheep and Deer in the fog and heat and Midges took its toll.
    I will stick to Fishing within reach of a return home in future.
    It was an experience, but one that i wouldnt wish on anyone.
    A further help to your viewers now. All the Fishing Marks and shore lines around Skye are full of tough Kelp and Seaweed. Fishing on Skye is not a pleasure and just ends up expensive in terms of tackle losses. A waste of time in my opinion, and you will get eaten alive by Midges, trust me on that even with Max Strength Deet Midgy Spray.
    It was hell on earth and im glad to be back home and can now fish locally at my favourite places. Also i can get great Fish and Chips and Calamari afterwards in Anstruther and other places around Fife. I love Fishing dearly but i have had to reset myself as i did think about giving it up after the[ Skye trip. Not a great move after having spent thousands off pounds on Fishing gear in the last year. Never mind guys i will get over it. Eventually Ha Ha.
    Looking forward to your future videos guys, you are the best .
    You both must have experiences like myself and maybe you could share them with us. As we all say live aint a bed of Roses.
    Thank you again to a pair of guys who play a big part in my life of Fishing and whom i look up to with admiration in all you do.
    I really mean that too guys.
    A warm heart to both of you.
    Steve in Fife.x

      Hi Steve, wow what a story! Glad you didn't give up fishing though :) I have heard bad things about the midges up in Scotland during the summer months, indeed I have heard that it can be unbearable. Was thinking of wild camping up there but might wait until the Autumn/Winter when the winds pick up and temperatures drop. As for losing lures in the weeds and snags, trust me I have had many sessions like that - as has Graeme. It's all part of the learning experience but it's why it's called fishing not catching! At least you have tried it and learned from it. - Mike

      @stevied8855 Před 8 lety

      Thanks Mike.
      Yes i would wait till later in the year before going to the top end of Scotland. Lower down is always ok, but the Highlands etc are unbearable with Midges.
      Thanks again.
      Steve.
