Having grown up not far from Shanagolden and now calling the USA home, this song takes me back to West Limerick every time I listen to it. Nobody can sing it like Margo. God bless to all who gave their lives in the cause of Irish freedom.

A great song written by Sean McCarthy from Kerry, He had no rhyming town in Kerry and luckily he had Shanagolden in County Limerick. A great song and someday I might visit Shanagolden on my way down to Kerry!

A wonderful combination of Donegal and Kerry

You fought my darling Willie, all through the summer days.
I heard the rifles firing in the mountains far away
I held you in my arms then, your blood ran clear and bright,
And you died in Shanagolden, on a lonely summer's night.
Must be one of the most heart-rending descriptions of our heroes who fought to make us free and keep us free.
Thanks to all the young brave men who fought for our freedom.

Such an appropriate song this year on the 100th year of the War of Independence.
Written by Sean McCarthy from Listowel sung by Margo 0'Donnel from Donegal.
    Here are the words:
The cold winds from the mountains are calling soft to me,
The smell of scented heather brings bitter memories:
A wild and lonely eagle up in the summer sky,
Flies high o'er Shanagolden, where my love Willie lies.
I met him in the winter time when snow was on the ground
The Irish hills were peaceful and love was all around.
Scarcely twenty years old, a young man in his prime.
We were married, darling Willie by the eve of Christmas time.
Do you remember Willie, we walked the moonlit road
I held you in my arms, love, I would never let you go.
Our hands they were entwined, my love, all in the pale moonlight,
By the fields of Shanagolden on a lonely winter's night.
Then came the call to arms, love, the heather was aflame.
Down from the silent mountains, the Saxon strangers came.
I held you in my arms then, my young heart wild with fear,
In the fields by Shanagolden, in the springtime of the year.
You fought them, darling Willie, all through the summer days.
I heard the rifles firing in the mountains far away
I held you in my arms then, your blood ran free and bright,
And you died in Shanagolden, on a lonely summer's night.
    But that was long ago, love, now our son grows fine and tall;
The hills they are at peace again: the Saxon strangers gone.
There's roses growing on your grave, there's an eagle in the sky ,
Flying high o'er Shanagolden, where my love Willie lies.

For me this song is about how fighting the oppressor impacts the 'ordinary' people.
Who are willing to go out & fight, & die, for their beliefs.
The lyrics combine so many lessons within it. Ultimately an anti-war song, in my head, combined with love, & loss, & the heartache of conflict.
It's a truly heartbreaking song IMO.

I don't know about that. Her accent is very Donegal definitely North. Shanagolden is southwest Limerick county definitely South. The reason accent is important for me because I am reminded that this song wrote by Mr. McCarthy, Listowel, Co. Kerry was about the 1919-21 war of Independence fought against the Black & Tans, etc. throughout all the island of Ireland.

A year later this song still brings tears to my English eyes.
It's a love song about experiences of war in my head.
IE The victims of conflict, & the situations they had to deal with, don't get heard much. Here, in this song, they do. In a most intimate way.
I'd say, just listen. If it doesn't bring a tear to your eye, move on. You not 'getting it'.

Nice song beautifully sung, but she left out the 2nd verse and skipped directly from the 1st to the 3rd verse. This is the verse she left out:
"I met him in the winter time when snow was on the ground
The Irish hills were peaceful and love was all around.
Scarcely twenty years old, a young man in his prime.
We were married, darling Willie by the eve of Christmas time".
