For me this song is about how fighting the oppressor impacts the 'ordinary' people. Who are willing to go out & fight, & die, for their beliefs. The lyrics combine so many lessons within it. Ultimately an anti-war song, in my head, combined with love, & loss, & the heartache of conflict. It's a truly heartbreaking song IMO.

The reason accent is important for me because I am reminded that this song wrote by Mr. McCarthy, Listowel, Co. Kerry was about the 1919-21 war of Independence fought against the Black & Tans, etc. throughout all the island of Ireland.
A year later this song still brings tears to my English eyes. It's a love song about experiences of war in my head. IE The victims of conflict, & the situations they had to deal with, don't get heard much. Here, in this song, they do. In a most intimate way. I'd say, just listen.
