I’ve done this hike. 19 miles round trip (Mist Trail out and JMT back to avoid crowds coming up the waterfalls) from the Curry Village parking lot. The fish eye lens effect in this video makes the cable part look way scarier than it actually is, although there are some challenges: When in a group ascending/ descending, you can move lockstep as a unit from board to board and keep a rhythm, although on decent I waited until there were not a lot of folks on the cables. Rest on the boards and avoid wedging your feet at the base of the poles. Some sections are missing as many as 2,3 maybe 4 boards; move up/down that entire section of the rock until you can rest on the next available board. On decent, contrary to what this guy is saying, start by facing down to the base until just before it starts too feel like too much slant, then turn around and descend backwards. Facing forward the whole time gives the sensation of falling forward/off the mountain, especially when the grade turns to about 45 degrees. Turn back around again when it flattens. Enjoy the views and stay in the moment! Take your time, this is an iconic part of the hike and a will be a lifetime memory! I can recommend you also bag Clouds Rest also during your stay. Beautiful reverse view of the valley at the top of CR.

My son and his friend just did Half Dome in July, and the Park Ranger told them the safest way, and recommended way coming down, was going backwards. Not sure if they just started that.
