A complete ascent of the Yosemite's Half Dome cables. Unbroken footage from the bottom to the top. See what it's really like. In this rare continuous video, I strapped a GoPro HERO wide-angle camera on my head and filmed the entire 425 foot vertical ascent. You'll be traveling 600+ feet at a 45 degree angle. Scary? Yes - so hang on tight.
Overcome your fears and hike Half Dome! You will LOVE it. The top is 8,842 feet above sea level. 4,737 feet above the valley. The views are superb. Just do it. A goal and a journey.
If you are planning this hike, this is a MUST SEE. No stills can convey the excitement. Narration is included to inform you about the cables. Other videos can't do it in the 15 mins allowed by CZcams. I do it in 12. It was filmed in June 2009 before permits. It's not as crowded now.
I go up the outside; it makes for a better video. We do not recommend it - I didn't do it until his 11th time. I'm now at #42. In the Wilderness, you assess the risk of what you are about to do, and deal with it.
Read my book: "One Best Hike: Yosemite's Half Dome;" the only guide on Half Dome.
Carpe Diem - Seize the day!

joseph allan kugler Back in the day, (mid 60's) I did the hike to the top a total of six times, usually with my younger brother or other family members. It wasn't unusual to meet others doing the 'climb' but never the madhouse it appears to be today. Once we were told the cables were not yet up, but decided to hike to the base anyway. When we arrived at the base, we found the cables were lying on the rock and just hadn't yet been elevated. So, we decided to go to the top anyway, just grabbing the cables by hand and stopping often to rest. When we finally reached the top, we were the only ones there.
For may years, I've had a large photo of myself sitting on 'The Diving Board' with my feet dangling over 5000' of ''nothing'' hanging on my living room wall.
However, my "Most Iconic Moment"....once hiked to the top of Yosemite Falls and worked my way down into the canyon the water flows through, walked to the very edge with my shoes right at the 'knife' edge and the water from a heavily flowing stream at the top of Yosemite Falls shooting out into empty air six feet from my right. After about 20 seconds of this, I begin to sense a little vertigo and, although the wind was calm, I realized a sudden gust and I would join the river at the very top of the fall, and judiciously backed away a bit.

I’m 61 now, but I hiked to the top in 1990 with my then girlfriend Shubi. Half way up she froze with fear and would not continue. I had to really cajole her for several scary minutes before she worked up enough nerve to start moving up again. Finally we made it to the summit and stayed up there for 3 hours. Absolutely beautiful breathtaking views. We hiked 8 miles to get to the sub dome, climbed to the summit and stayed for three hours and then hiked back 8 miles. We slept like babies in our tent that night. I’m so glad I did the hike then as my fear of heights has gotten so much more pronounced as I’ve gotten older. A lifetime memory that I’ll never forget.

Just climbed half dome on Monday. This is an incredibly difficult hike- I am a novice hiker, 17+ miles round trip and it took our group of mid 20 yr olds 13 hours to complete. I was very concerned with my fear of heights and my concern was valid. I ended up powering through by simply not looking over the sides of Halfdome and simply focused on my buddy in front of me but it was still terrifying. I would wait until later in the afternoon (1-3 PM) to actually begin the cables because there is much less congestion and you can move quickly without stopping to let someone pass. ALSO, Subdome, which is a massive mini mountain is a very tough hike that you must conquer that in order to get to the base of the cables. My advice would be to train extensively before making this hike- it will probably be the most difficult hike you have ever done

We did this hike 2 days ago, Dec. 6, 2014. If anyone reads this, and possesses a general knowledge of rock climbing, you should wait for the off season. From the trail head to the summit we saw maybe 30-40 people. Once we passed the Nevada Falls trail juncture, we saw only 6; 1 coming down from Sub-Dome and 5 that came behind us to join us on the summit. We traveled over 6,000 miles to do this hike and the weather was perfect, warm at day, cold at night, and clear skies. We hiked in shorts and shirtless most of the way and only had to dawn cold weather gear before the push to the summit. There was snow on the way up and at the top, however simple common sense prevented accidents. The only caveat to doing the hike in the off season is that the cables are resting on the rock (no metal support poles or wooden 2x4s). Therefore, you must pick the cables up under your own strength and trust me, they are not light. At the points where they are bolted into the rock, the tension is too severe to even attempt to pick them up. We hiked using Black Diamond climbing harnesses, locking carabiners, pressiks, climbing boots, and simple Cabelas brand gloves (more for the cold than anything). For those who are unfamiliar with pressiks, we tied a 3 foot or less rope through our harness using a double-fishermen's knot and then wrapped the rope around the cable twice, forming two bites, and then clipped the rope to our carabiner. In case of a fall, the bites would synch together, create friction, and hold us in place. Not to mention, the cables are also secured by 3ft+ support cables along the path to prevent them from swaying. So, if we fell, we would fall until we reached one of these points. We also utilized a safety pressik because at these conjuctures, and when we swapped cables (there are technically 3 or 4 separate cables), we had to disconnect and re-connect. We then repelled in normal fashion using the Pressik. The ascent took approximately 20 minutes (I rested a bit and took photos), and the descent took less that 10.
We left the trailhead at 11am, summited at 4pm, watched the sunset, and hiked back down to sub-dome at dusk and all the way back to the valley at dark. It took us 10 or so hours. My friend and I are college students from Atlanta, Georgia and have attained climbing and mountaineering skills through the Boy Scouts. We are not experts, however, we know how to travel smart, and hike safe. Again, if the weather permits, go during the off season and your experiene will be 100x better. Not to mention, from what I have seen, most deaths happening during the summer.

I used the cables way back in 1979. Back then all the vertical poles were very wobbly and I remember thinking, WTF???, Yosemite officials approved this wobbly death trap cable rig??? The vertical poles look firmly attached in this vid, thank God, I didn't think I was gonna make it back in 1979. I don't remember any lines back then. We also camped overnight on top of the summit. I believe it was still legal back in 1979.

Isabel - I was there in June 2009 - a huge cloud came over the top and we got down. Many continued and yes, at about 3 pm, a man slipped and died. Since 1919 when the cables were put up - only 3 have fallen to their deaths when the cables ore up for summer use. 2 were weather related. Half Dome is in the Wilderness, so there are no rules about who is "allowed." Each kid has a parent who knows their kid's ability - or not. With now over 40,000 people going to the top each summer....it's statistically a safe hike.

Do not attempt this if you are not in good condition. I was a long distance runner and also worked out at the gym. I suggest not taking pre-teens. I hiked it back in the 80s.
I left the valley floor at sunrise and got back after sunset. You are already at high altitude when you leave the valley floor and you are going to gain 4000 more feet. If I had know what was waiting for me at the cables I might not have gone. When I saw it I could not believe it. To be honest , If I had been alone I might not have gone up. But I met some other people on my solo hike and joined their group and I did not want to look like a scaredee-cat in front of them. The view was worth it and I got to see someone climbing up the face.
So in 12 hours I hiked there and back ( about 16 miles?) gained 4000 feet going up, went up and down the cables. I compare it with running the 26 mile marathon I did once.
I left my backpack at the base of the cables to go up. When I got back the ground critters had eaten holes in it to get at a snack I had inside....had to buy a new one back at the valley store. I think those critters have a racket going with the pack pack sales people to increase sales.

I was there 30 years ago. I started to climb up and realized that if I was to slip and fall, I would probably die. So I turned around and went down. This is way too steep and dangerous for the average person. There should be a harness and tether system required for safety so you are always secured to the cable. Surprises me that the park system allows anyone to climb up that route. I can imagine somebody like myself, getting half way up and then becoming too scared to either go up or down and sit there and wait for a rescue. I have skydived at least 13 times prior to climbing and I have a fear of heights, like standing near the edges of tall buildings, getting near tall glass windows on high buildings, looking down old stair cases where you can see 5-10-20 floors below etc, flying in an airplane does not bother me at all.

CZcams only gives you 15 minutes for free. Mine fits. Other folks only show snippets of the cables going up. You can actually go up with me.....watch it on a stair stepper.

I did this 7.1 mile hike (one-way) up to the top of the Dome once, way, way, WAY back in ancient 1977. If you CAN physically do it...then DO it...at least once. (long, long historical post...)
My favorite landmark along the way is/was the tourist Warning Sign posted right at the top of the Falls next to the safety rail that runs near the edge of the Falls, about 2.2 miles from the Parking Lot. There is a caricature on this sign of the guy falling over the Falls.
The stick-figure cartoon at the top of the Falls represents a poor guy who waded across the Falls, and then slipped and is obviously falling to his death.
The sign used to say something like: "How Many Will Die this Year?"
I don't remember if the Rangers actually kept a tally of people who waded and slipped to their gruesome deaths....
Q.: Does anyone know if this Warning Sign is still posted at the top of Falls, now in 2017?
    Dangerous Place:
Actually, the top of the Falls isn't really the most "dangerous" place along the way to the top of the Dome, and the Cable Trail isn't that scary as long as you keep one gloved hand on the cable at all times and DON'T look down.
Really, the most dangerous and slippery part of the hike between the Trail Head and the Top of Half Dome is really right along the Mist Trail, where one misstep and one ankle-turning skid or slip across wet step-rocks on the Trail can instantly send your butt sliding under the waist-high safety handrail, and then OMFG!!...say goodbye forever, because you WILL go ass over teakettle and crash in a pile of broken bones on the rocks some 400' below, strewn along the gushing, spraying, rushing River gorge.
Back then in 1975, my Bay Area Hang-Gliding group of friends were scoping Half Dome out as a possible, radical hang-gliding takeoff point (and hoping) somehow that we could evade all the Ranger Ricks. We had written the Feds (and actually received back a permission letter) to allow our innocent "Kite Flying Club" to fly kites over the Valley Floor.....and of course, we did not mention they were Hang Gliding kites.
After making the hike up and verifying that there WAS enough headwind (you need a mild 12-18 mph wind right into your face at a mountaintop take-off place to assure lift) and seeing that there was a natural updraft coming up the face of the Dome itself, we knew it COULD be done. We envisioned using a team of a dozen guys to haul a half-dozen 55lb Rogallo* type kites up the Trail.
    (The 1970's-era early hang-glider kites were a triangle-shaped* design.)
The hike itself is a DANG long 7 mile trail with about 4000' of Elevation, and not for the faint of heart.
From the Parking Lot down at the Happy Isles trail head, we'd have to pack those kites up the trail past both Falls with two guys at the ends of each 18' long rolled-up kite.
Then we'd grind on up the steepening trail to the base of the Dome, and then slowly, muscle the kites up the cables to the top of the Dome. Doable....as long as you got there ahead of the crowd.....but we expected we'd be stopped either along the way by a Park Ranger on horseback, or worse, a helicopter and a bullhorn, at the top.
The "Plan" was to draw straws at the top, with the lucky 6 winners getting to fly down to the Valley Floor and land at Yellow Pine campground. Aside from helping to carry the kites up without getting to fly back down, the "unlucky 6" would take some quick pictures and video from the top and then scurry down.
The planned Landing Area was to be right next to the Merced River.
We knew we would astonish all of the Yosemite Valley crowd, and we knew we'd immediately be arrested moments after landing.
Alas...we never followed through. It wasn't really the illegality of the Flight Plan that stopped us; after all we'd all had no previous problems or worries about taking-off or flying our Gliders from other "illegal" places....we'd been doing it for a while, all over California. Mount Konocti, over Clear Lake. for instance. Mount Umunhum, despite it being closed to the Public. Every high ridge or mountaintop point along the San Mateo and San Francisco county Pacific coastline. And a few hardy souls had already (illegally) flown off Glacier Point in Yosemite......so hang-gliders strapped to the roofs of a bunch of cars down on the Valley Floor probably wouldn't have alerted the Park Rangers. We would have been BUSTED,and BUSTED big time, somewhere along the way....as soon as the sun came up.
    Oh well.
Now, would I consider hiking up that trail again, now, just as a day hike, some 42 years later?
It SOUNDS like fun...but...I don't see it happening. Not sure if I still have that kind of leg and heart stamina....and making it to the top of the Dome is kinda like experiencing your first lovemaking experience.....and everyone knows you can't really redo or recreate that amazing "first time' feeling and memory...........
