    I've been a machinist twenty years,I know how to grind a drill by hand on a grinding wheel,it's a art in itself especially big drills,not many people know how to do it.

      Yeah and you gotta do it regularly to stay in practice. I totally understand the process but never could quite get it right. So after several cheap sharpening gizmos i bought a drill doctor. Which works spectacularly well but only on drilld with a twist rate thats compatible with the indexing method. Those that arent end up just a blob at the end. Those that work look just like new bits, split point and all.

    Most of this was painful to watch. Not that hard to freehand once you learn the geometry of a drill. I find it very relaxing to sit down with good light preferably sun light and a pair of magnifiers on and sharpen 50 in one sitting. If im getting technical I'll use a gauge.

    Sharpening a drill bit properly really isn't that hard. But that's not it. Look at the small chips. The bit is going to overheat in no time at all.
    Once you learn the basics you don't need any jigs or angle finders. Freehand. Been doing it since high school, when they taught you real world information

    it's really great. i had a problem drilling steel. maybe you have some answers?
    there's a 5mm thick general-purpose steel that I had trouble drilling. With a new drill bit, after just 2 drillings, the bit loses its shape. Even when I change the drill bit, nothing happens. I can't drill any more.

    • @earnwithbots2783
      @earnwithbots2783 Před 6 měsíci +2

      Get better bits and dont let them get too hot. Use a lubricating oil, drill a bit and stop when it starts smoking, wait let cool and then drill some more.

    • @danalexandroaie3233
      @danalexandroaie3233 Před 6 měsíci +1

      Coz you don't know how to sharpen a drill bit. You simply don't need that device coz using that device will prevent you rolling the drill bit in order to sharpen it properly. Read a book where a professional sharpen of a drill bit is described, than take that drill bit, make it straight and then sharpen it again, following those explanations. Anyway, the drill bit must be sharpened on the frontal side of the grinder stone, not on its side. Also take care to cool that drill bit in water periodically. Good luck!

    • @sgiavy5244
      @sgiavy5244 Před 6 měsíci

      Hey Dana lexan... I thought the same, BUT, on watching more closely you have to notice the cutting edge of the bit is vertical while fastened in the jig. Some audio to explain this might be necessary for first timers. I also sharpen mine by hand on the front of a grinding stone wheel. However this is a sanding pad and it's being used correctly.

    My friend, you are an amateur. You simply don't know how to sharpen a drill bit, under what angle depending on the metal you want to drill. Only amateurs will sharpen a drill bit on the side of the grinder stone. In this case the drill bit will be sharpen innequally coz a bigger amount of metal will be polished from the right side of the drill bit compared with a smaller amount of metal polished on the left side. More than that, you haven't polished that drill bit on its back, that drill bit will cut 3 or 4 holes and then it will get burned. You better learn more and only then try to post here.
