  • Garrett talks with us about the meaning behind "Depths III"
I knew one truth, and that truth was the sea. Cold and knowing, it saw the coward in me. And as the stain of epochs lines my tongue, I choked heavy on the past, too numb to speak back. We’re each abandoned by the hands of time that set us down to sail circles (1) across a straight line. Sister moon, are we all that’s left? Just a silent satellite and the sigh of flesh. (2) Come down! And rest your lunar head on my breast, listen to the terror tear at my chest. Our masts in tatters, oars shattered, feel free to pull me back to the vast, unforgiving mass.
Should we call this art - my falling apart? The tangents of an imbalanced heart. As matter multiplied, I divide... but I digress - the deprivation is taking effect.
You said if I stood against my darkness, not all of me would die. (3) But all I see on the surface is a shadow and it occurs to me this could mean suicide. When you went quiet (4) I turned to silence, (5) seven sisters (6) draw me back across the moor. (7) Could you still love me in my leaving? Would you remember me by the moments we forgot? And as the waves slapped at my raft, I cursed the fate - like our vows, they broke at the bow. Flanked by the mist I inhaled the breath of existence... then you called me for one last time: “I am the wind - the Be and the Still. I am the Depths, the Immeasurable Will.” And when I awoke in that Garden, Lord did you see me as I was dreaming?
I locked eyes with the storm, the sky sank down to receive the fury of the sea. The abolition of my being, (8) the precipice of eternity. (9) Incandescence burst through the black, the veil was torn (10) as the void collapsed. The rains will subside. Be my eyes, (11) show me hope in the maw of the night. Our fractured pasts fall into one, a dozen stars (12) collide as a perpetual sun. (13) And as we disintegrate, will you be the Fire that burns in my lungs?
Breathe me in. Watch me burn. Come breath me in. Breathe me in. You’ll watch me burn.

I am addicted to this song since it came out last year and I have two absolute favorite parts. First is "should we call this art, my falling apart?". I always feel like yeah I understand how calling someones struggle and pain in life art is a strange phenomenon, but I think it is the way you express your self and the impact it has on others lives as this song helped me a lot in dark times and your way of expressing your self is absolutely genius, better than a lot of poets.
The other favorite is: you said if I stood against my darkness, not all of me would die... I love this because it is a feeling you can have while depressed, that if and when you get better, your way of thinking and your attitude changes and that can drag you back, because you can feel like you are not yourself anymore and you can get kinda addicted to being sad and miserable. You might not meant your lyrics like I understood, but that is why you make true art, people can get meaning out of it different ways and thus get inspired in different ways. Thank you for your music.

Thanks for sharing this Garrett, I went through some very similar things a few years ago. I had been following an unhealthy path for a long time and digesting massive amounts of secular metal, when I found this album called Melting Sun by Lantlos, after listening to it I became very aware of a desire I never had before to ponder what it would be like to never wake up again. After experiencing a close call, I heard the song “Numbers” by Everything in Slow Motion I decided to end my prodigal period and reconnect with my family and walk out my faith again. I was so glad to find bands that were so poignant and capable of abstract thought like Silent Planet when I renewed my faith, keep up the amazing writing and remember, when we think about things ending, we have to weigh the absence of our witness not being there for someone who is hurting and needs it. Bless you guys! I’m shooting for HM Magazine now near Nashville, shot you guys at Exit/In with Contortionist, hope to catch you on the next tour!

I can relate so much to what you;ve said in this video, Garrett and I really appreaciate the fact that you're so open about it. I've also been struggling with these types of thoughts and states and it's so freeing to know that I'm not the only one. You know, I've heard some christians say that to have these thoughts is a sin, which i definitely disagree with. But that made me bottle up all my feelings and made me ashamed to actually talk about the cases of depression and suicide. I'm looking forward to see the concert in Czech Republic because the one in Poland was cancelled. You're such an inspiration to me!

2:27 "Why do I think there's something beautiful about being in this dark place?"
For some people, it's beautiful but horrible at the same time. There's also a research found that depression is a positive predictor of creativity and may promote creativity to some extent. Garret's depression showed that he became creative by writing this song while we the fans also claim that Depth III is undeniably beautiful. I also had depression back then, and I put my emotions into some pencil drawings although they're tend to be dark arts. I feel like it's beautiful but tortured simultaneously. If you read this, thank you and I appreciate for your efforts.
