But: there have been enough protests and demonstrations for the freedom of Assange, where police did not arrest the protesters. I have demonstrated against the US nukes on German territory and I have not been arrested. Just two examples that show some differences.

Just like the West except we aren't allowed to speak our mind on issues regarding matters of Gender, Sexual Orientation, the J*wish question, Feminism, etc, etc, ad infinitum. V V P has "bogey man" status because he has carefully cultivated that image. Any lesser leader in Rossiya would not last 5 mins, let alone 20 years. These kids are very comfortable, safe and secure; unlike their Ukrainian counterparts, precisely because VVP has been protecting them since they were babies. They have lead very soft, insulated lives. When your country his at war, to express dissident views can be seen has a treason against your country. As some one of them answered, you must never betray your best friend or your country. But it seems that in general the Russians (at least those young russians) are really scared of what Putin has done. They thing he has donne a wrong decission and they feel sorry for the Ukraine people.

Some brave individuals in Russia to be willing to talk about true feelings with the present political climate there. Sometimes it's more reading their inflections, and body language to understand what they truly mean with their answers.
Great service showing the rest of the world the true Russian people. Our western media tries to make the RU people out to be some sort of mind-numbed boogeyman, when in reality they look, sound, act, and feel just like the rest of the world. Ukraine didn't want a war either, but after the US overthrew the government in Feb 2014, installing a far-right junta, attacked their own citizens for over eight years. Russia didn't start the war, they tried peaceful means to stop the war, until Feb 2022, and the Ukrainian barrage on Donetsk City, they intervened to stop a genocide.

Word to Russians. In the United States, you're MORE protected, saying bad stuff against a politician than you are a regular person. If I tell a lie about a normal person and say, for example, that someone is a pathological liar, when they're not, I can get in real trouble. But I can say the same thing about a politician and not get in trouble. Free speech is a wonderful thing.

I am glad and admire that some Russian citizens were brave enough to speak.
It seems that most of the young people interviewed want change but still unsure how this can happen. Beyond humans differences is still the desire for peace and normal existence. It does seem in some countries that the older hate and distrust is pushed into the citizens by current leaders and is not allowed to become the past ( Ccp China also does this to their citizens ). I’m originally from Ukraine, but I speak fluent Russian. The translation in this video is spot on. Amazing job! It really shows that Putin is disconnected from the Russian people. It pains my heart to see that. They don’t want war with Ukraine. It’s not really a war against Russia, it’s war against Putin, the victims here are both Ukrainian and Russian. May God have mercy on both! 🙏🏻
Not really... Putin is disconnected of the young generation who do not watch their tv propaganda. But their parents and grand parents do. He knows pretty well, that majority of Russia is still orientated to soviet times. That might be a huge problem for everyone under 25 but the others like this part to live in isolation. That's what they have been told and prepared for, especially in soviet times. They are like most of Trump supporters. Not interested in globalism, but in nationalism.
So you are wrong when you say it's just Putin. It's not just Putin. Otherwise police, courts, opposition and his own party members would criticise his action. Putin prepared his machinery to be loyal and the others are silent because they are scared. The ones who do not accept that, leaving Russia.
In total that means, that his dictatorship is making progress. There is a reason, why noone went on street when Putin changed their constitution in 2008 so he is now able to reign 6 years instead of 4. There is a reason, why noone went crazy (even the younger ones) when Putin did a referendum to get his years erased so he can reign till 2036.
If you keep silent, you accept it. If you accept it, you are a part of this problem. So it's not Putin who attacked Ukraine, but the majority of RUSSIA.
Many are unhappy because they do not understand why western countries sanction everyone. Especially the inhabitans suffer. For sure,.... as I mentioned before. They are responsible for that. Now let them suffer in isolation, so they can think about all these things happened in their country for the last 2 decades. Otherwise they will be same blind people as they are now.

Also, why are you casually ignoring the fact that the Ukrainian government was supporting self declared nazi militias doing genocide in separatist regions with Russian majority? Even the US senate voted a bill in 2018 to stop providing weapons to Ukraine because of the Azov Battalion war crimes in the Donbas. Not only the Ukrainian government was supporting these groups they also integrated them to the National Guard and they were openly planning to take Crimea from Russia, even though Crimea has a Russian majority and it belonged to Russia before a Soviet leader granted it as a gift to Ukraine. Crimea and the Donbas are Russian regions and they are historically known as Little Russia. Russia should not let Russian people suffer under a regime that flirts with nazis.

2. Crimea is Russian? Who told you that? Crimea was always a part of soviet union. Chruschtschow gave it to Ukrainians, because most their inhabitants were Ukrainians. So borders were made by Soviets. The same is for Luhansk and Donezk. It's Ukraine. Just because in modern times these parts get more Russian because of pro-russian politics and economy, it's not Russia or your "Little-Russia". I didn't see that philosophy when Chechens were killed, when they wanted to have a separation of Russia.

Okay, I'm only a couple interviews in and I already like the uncut better. It shows how talented of an interviewer you are. You ask fantastic follow-up questions and get really interesting answers. I am sorry that the modern information war generated by the centuries-old confrontation of the cultures of Asia, Russia, East and West does not give us the opportunity to reason sensibly and, moreover, to understand each other. Americans live far across the ocean and are unlikely to be able to understand what it's like to live and think differently, like me, I'm not just their alter ego, I'm a different person, like my loved ones. Eventhough it has been answered at one of the comments, I would like to state it again for the non Russian speakers: The interviewer repeats the opening question which is translated to English as "Is Putin a great guy?". However this question carries a humorist double meaning as it could be also translated to "Is Putin handsome?"
This makes the question sound lighter and answers funnier, though all the interviewed people grasp the real intent behind the question.

Interesting point: the girl who said 'Our hearts are demanding a change' was quoting the song 'хочу перемен' ('kochu peremen') or 'I want a change' by Viktor Tsoi and Kino, soviet musician protesting the state of government and situation in Russia during Soviet Union. It is a song that is used in protest and revolutionary contexts and is unfortunately becoming relevant once again. Great video! What amazes me is how people in Russia are afraid to say their minds and they don't notice this fear or reluctance. I live in Brazil, a country with many many problems but I was never afraid to say what I think about the government. I guess I'm not afraid because nobody would knock on my door at night and carry me bound to prison if I did.

Frist, almost everyone interviewed seems 'nervous' at your questions (particularly about Putin). That in itself, says a lot about the 'feeling' of true freedom or lack of it in Russia. And secondly, almost to the person, when asked if they want Putin to continue to lead Russia, ALL the answers were a 'quick' NO! That, also, says volumes.
So, I am Russian but moved to Canada around ~2 years ago and watching these interviews hurt a lot... personally to me, the way they all answer, the way they sway and change the theme it's all so unbelievably familiar. Even if many of the people accept the state of things their answers just seem off and I can say for sure that I'd answer in exactly same way, even if I was against the government.
Whether subconsciously or consciously the fear of persecution for your opinions always persisted, and growing up I tended to pick up the habits from other people - to always sway from difficult questions, never say anything definitively negative in regards to government and etc.
It's only now after moving out I've started to see just how prevalent this culture of "endure, but never speak up" is at home. It's not unique to modern Russia either, I think we've adopted it from people who lived in USSR, who also adopted it from previous generations.
So tl;dr things are a complete mess.
They are facing imprisonment if they speak out against their government

The way these young people answer reminds me of the era before 1989 when my country (then Czechoslovakia) was still socialist and under the influence of Soviet Union. I remember my parents always telling me not to tell anything that they were speaking privately, out loud in the public. I sense these young people are experiencing the same, 30+ years later. And I'm afraid it's going to be even worse. Poor young beautiful souls.

Just found this channel due to the ongoing conflict and find it very useful to understand the perspective from the streets of Russia. One thing you don't get with news is unbiased neutrality, and it seems like this channel can provide that outlook from the people who matter most: the people. Would like to see the older generation highlighted more, however. I find it adds an interesting juxtaposition between perspectives since they have lived in the USSR in their lifetimes, and no matter their point of view/argument they usually say something wise in some way shape or form

It's just difficult to do with mainstream media, and I think a channel where you ask the people, on the streets, of all age groups, questions about the realities of the situation they unwillingly find themselves in and seek their true opinions is something to be valued. It makes it that much easier to make that separation and serves as a valuable insight into lives you won't find anywhere else.

I was born in San Francisco. I still work there. I can't believe how clean the streets are in Moscow. Compare any street to say Ellis St., Hyde, O'Farrell, Leavenworth, or even the so-called nice part like the Embarcadero, and still, SF is like a garbage dump. Chechnya is a part of Russian Federation.
In Georgia we protected civilians of South Osetia that were killed by Georgian army (which attacked first).
In 2015 we signed Minsk agreements with Ukraine to avoid big conflict and stop the war there. It was very simple - all territories stay in Ukraine but their government guarantees safety of Russian-speaking East of Ukraine and their right to speak their language. However, Ukraine wasn't interested in that at all. It is perfectly known fact that we will not allow NATO to be so close to our borders but they are strongly willing to do so. Ukraine wanted to gain from the West - and this is the result. Ukrainian government knew what would happen and they did what they did.
The West continued to supply Ukraine with weapons instead of forcing them to act in accordance with Minsk agreements. They failed another agreement in Turkey in 2022. The US support any war that allows them to gain. And we perfectly see who is doing what. So we have no need to say anything against current foreign policy of our government that is doing everything to protect our country along it's borders. We dod not want our soldiers to die anywhere but the West was hardly working on organising another war conflict away from their own lands. We just have nothing to do but respond. That's it.
P.S. Gulags were ceased by Nikita Khrushchev who was replaced in 1964.

In times when people who speak their minds in Russia are referred to as 'insects who must be crushed', these people (the one who really said that they think) are extremely brave. A very meaningful video and an eye-opener for many people in the world. Good work.
The thing is that Moscow is not representative of Russia as a whole in terms of public opinion. Similarly to major cities in the west, Moscow is more Liberal and pro west than the rest of Russia. Moscow is said to have between 30-40% of the population that opposes Russia's current government. Similar situation in St Petersburg. But if you step outside both these cities, even other fairly big cities like Rostov etc... Most people are quite pro Putin and you can find videos proving this to be true on youtube.

As an American I sometimes get embarrassed at the way we openly make fun of our government and our legislators. Seeing how afraid these young people are to speak their opinions without retribution from their government makes me proud that at least we have freedom to speak freely if we don’t like something about our government. This is how we are able to create change.

When you can’t answer the question honestly because of fear from retribution the questions become less relevant. I have a profound love and respect for the Russian people and I admire the people in your videos who answer the questions you give them honestly. I found some of the answers very thought-provoking so thank you for taking the time to make these videos. The youth of today are incredible. They have strong, clear, well thought out opinions. They see baby boomers as have fkd the planet for them and have really grave concerns about its liveability for their future. They have to juggle responsibilities and social dilemmas ina,way my age never had to. They know their place in the world far better than my generation did in the '80s. We had free university, jobs grew on trees, housing was affordable and climate change was not even mentioned, even though we know now it was already well on its way.

I'm impressed by how sharp these random people are. Most candid on-the-street interviews here about politics and world events result in simplistic views on what are complex, nuanced subjects. Opinions that you can often tell are sourced from an amalgam of corporate media talking points, late night "comedians" and online echo chambers. These Russian kids seem to have at least one finger on the pulse of realpolitik and express themselves well in that regard.

I know the same happens on Russia but since the West is bragging about freedom, souldn't be different? You have the greatest president in the world, and you should be proud of him. We have grown up seing (propaganda) movies where Russians are painted as being the bad guys all the time, you have to forgive us if we believe the media when they present us their fake news. It happens that 145 millions of you Russians are sitting on 1/5 of all dry land in the world and western liders would like to see that changed. Lots of minerals in all that land, you should have been very rich if were not for the sanctions. A few years from now, essential minerals mining will start to dry in other parts of the world and tbe West will be forced to buy from you guys, your nation is poised to become rich. Because I was around 20 during the 90's and for real it was one of the best decades to be a young idiot. Yes I know it is obvious that it was not the case the same way everywhere on the planet, and especially in Russia, but still it hits me very hard that this decade can be seen as one of the worst when in EU, USA and many other places, it was an incredible piece of freedom and progress. It was harsh and violent, don't get me wrong, but it was an insane crossroad of possibilities (and music was so damn good). Unfortunately everything went downhill since, and I'm pretty sad younger ones never had a taste of such radical freedom.
They tread so carefully, it kinda makes me sad people are this apprehensive to even answer these basic questions. Goes to show the fear Putin has inflicted on the country.. I hope Ukraine will be independent and I hope to see a Russian without Putin!

They all should have excellent infrastructure and well paying careers. They do not have these things because the political elites are stealing from the people. I feel very sorry about all this mess... we're also praying a lot for Russia and Russian people here in Germany! Nobody here wants you to suffer or to lose life's possibilities. Many people also know that most conflicts are not only the fault of one side... NATO is not completely innocent.
