John Michael Talbot is one of the first albums I bought when I first came back to Christ at 24 in the 1970's. I have liked his music now all these years and I am 74. Both of us have aged a tad bit. I'm not Catholic either, but love his music.
I have been so inspired by John Michael Talbot in this rendition that I have made an album which includes it . May God continue to bless us with his music.
I thank you, for helping me to hold on to my faith. My faith, when my world has come crashing down. It is Jesus who has lifted me, each and every time.
We sing this Hymn at our Church. "Only in God" can we be humbled. Who we all are does not come from Money, Success, and our I.Q. Levels, but "only in God" can we have true faith in. Like Paul said, "When everything in our life disappears, faith, hope, and love remain, but the greatest of these is Love". "God's love never fails because God's love never dies".
I'm so very proud to say I'm Catholic - "my stronghold - my savior............I shall not be moved" - thank you JMT for your strenght and showing the wonder of our faith and our beloved St. Francis - much love.
This song has been dear to me for many years. Growing up from a young boy. And now as a father. I like to share with my son. Expressing to him how greatful we should all be for Jesus Christ. And the example he is for us and the Church.
John Michael has been an inspiration both spiritually and musically and I will always treasure singing with him in 1992 at Little Portion. The years have not been kind to me, but my faith and music have kept my sights on God. Bless you, John Michael!!
Guitar Samurai! I sang with John as well at the little portion for the worship tracks. Please contact me I would love to catch up I am in Charlottesville Virginia. Where are you?
When I wonder how I can stay in a church that has so many failings- I come to things like this and drink of the deep springs of Spirit that no human sin and failure can destroy--tarnish for too many alas yes, but never destroy..
Somebody said in a comment here that Jesus never said to go into all the world and make denominations. Praise God for truth. What we must understand is that we are all One Spirit and one body in The Lord Jesus Christ, STOP the strife and confusion, and walk in love as we have been commanded to do. I listen to this song daily, and it never fails to be a source of comfort, grace and immense peace. Thank you for posting this so much. I mean if you really think about it what else is described in denominations??....money. God loves us all, we just need to be still long enough to get a revelation of that fact
The song is based on psalm 62. The denominations came as a result of the oppression and suppression of the bible and the word of God by the catholic church, which killed thousands upon thousands of christians who chose to follow the word of God and not the word of the priest or pope. The protest came as a result of objection to the teachings of the catholic church, and when they wanted to kill the father of reformation who himself was a catholic, the Princes of German protested....and there you have the birth of protestantism, and that's where you have many denominations afterwards, many are those who have bent the true word of the bible to meet their twisted doctrines. i've just compressed what is the long history of the matyrs, Read John Fox book of the matyes and another By Ellen White ' The Great Controversy', you'll tremble for what the catholic institution is, if the recent years revelations in the media is any news. Remember, its not the faithful people in the church who probably do not know the history, its the institution of papacy. The song is beautiful, hey.
In fact, there are approximately 40-50,000 Protestant churches, one created every 24 hours. After two thousand years, the Church founded by Jesus Christ remains visible and every present in our society (see Matthew 16:18). St. Ignatious of Antioch, first used the term "Catholic" in 107 AD in a letter to the Symereans. Catholicism means "universal". Who promulgated the Bible for the entire world, the Catholic Church (see Where we got the Bible: Our Debt to the Catholic Church, by Henry Grey Graham). The money you mentioned has not gone unused my friend. Who created orphanages, hospitals, scientific method, universities, among many other things in the Western world, the Catholic Church (see How the Catholic Church Created Western Civilization, by Thomas Woods). Not one institution feeds, clothes, houses, etc more people than the Catholic Church. It is the largest charitable organization in the world. There are ~1.5 billion Catholics in the world. Catholicism is not a denomination it is the common denominator which Christ himself establish with St. Peter. Yours in Christ.
Hello, this is a common misconception my friend. It appears you are referring to "Sola Fide" a term that is unbiblical. Based on this fallible teaching, I can go out and commit as many sins as I wish (i.e., break all 10 commandments) and not lose my salvation. This simply defies human reasoning. I would suggest reading James 2:24, Matt 7: 21-27, Rom 1:5, Rom 16:26, 1 Cor 13:2, 1 Cor 13:13, Gal 5:6, Jam 2:17, Jam 2:19, Jam 2:20, 1 tim 4:1, Ezek 18:24, Luke 8:13, Rom 11: 22, 1 Cor 9:27, 1 Cor 10:12, Gal 5:5, Phil 2:12, Heb 6: 4-8, 2 Peter 2:20-21, and many others. Truth does not contradict itself but when 7 books (66 v 73) get removed from the Bible so that it fits with your human (fallible) theology (e.g., Martin Luther) you are left with partial truth. Yours in Christ
Peter, the one who asserts has the burden of proof. So please provide foundation for your above assertions. I am not asking for biased opinions from anticatholic writers as provided above but empirical data to support your conclusions. Has the been corruption and scandal in the Christ founded by Christ? Yes! Historically, this is nothing new and I am sure you would agree. Let me expound a bit on this matter for you Peter. Christ selected 12 dysfunction Jews some of which were frowned up by their peers (e.g., tax collector). One denied Christ 3 times and yet another gave Him up for 30 pieces of silver but Christ knew what He was doing. St. Peter was picked as the first pope (See Matthew 16:18) on which he was to build Christ's church. The pillar and foundation of truth is NOT the Bible believe it or not it is the Church of Christ (see 1 Tim 3:15). We also know that "he [who] refuses to listen even to the church...treat him as...tax collector" (see Matt 18:17). When you dishonor the Church, "you show contempt for the Church of God" (see 1 Cor 11:22). When you read the entire history of the Church you cease to be Protestant or any other denomination as the history speaks for itself. There have been 266 Popes some of which were bad apples let's be honest, but so too was Peter in the beginning. I trust in the Lord's words "that the gates of hell would not prevail" on his Church and so far it hasn't despite all of the scandal along the way. There are ~1.5 billion Catholics around the world and based on statistics alone there are bound to be a few that stray from our Lord. Albert Barnes (19th century Presbyterian) asserted, "The meaning of this phrase may be thus expressed: ‘Thou, in saying that I am the Son of God, hast called me by a name expressive of my true character. I, also, have given to thee a name expressive of your character. I have called you Peter, a rock. . . . I see that you are worthy of the name and will be a distinguished support of my religion" [Barnes’ Notes on the New Testament, 170]. John Broadus (19th century Calvinist) stated, "As Peter means rock, the natural interpretation is that ‘upon this rock’ means upon thee. . . . It is an even more far-fetched and harsh play upon words if we understand the rock to be Christ and a very feeble and almost unmeaning play upon words if the rock is Peter’s confession" [Commentary on the Gospel of Matthew, 356]. Craig Blomberg (Baptist) commented, "The expression ‘this rock’ almost certainly refers to Peter, following immediately after his name, just as the words following ‘the Christ’ in verse 16 applied to Jesus. The play on words in the Greek between Peter’s name (Petros) and the word ‘rock’ (petra) makes sense only if Peter is the Rock and if Jesus is about to explain the significance of this identification" [New American Commentary: Matthew, 22:252]. J. Knox Chamblin (contemporary Presbyterian) asserted, "By the words ‘this rock’ Jesus means not himself, nor his teaching, nor God the Father, nor Peter’s confession, but Peter himself. The phrase is immediately preceded by a direct and emphatic reference to Peter. As Jesus identifies himself as the builder, the rock on which he builds is most naturally understood as someone (or something) other than Jesus himself" ["Matthew" in Evangelical Commentary on the Bible, 742]. Herman Ridderbos (Contemporary Dutch Reformer) stated, "It is well known that the Greek word petra translated ‘rock’ here is different from the proper name Peter. The slight difference between them has no special importance, however. The most likely explanation for the change from petros (‘Peter’) to petra is that petra was the normal word for ‘rock.’ . . . There is no good reason to think that Jesus switched from petros to petra to show that he was not speaking of the man Peter but of his confession as the foundation of the Church. The words ‘on this rock [petra]’ indeed refer to Peter" [Bible Student’s Commentary: Matthew, 303]. Even the leading Protestant biblical scholar NT Wright did not dispute the above in that Peter established a Church. In 107 AD, St. Ignatious of Antioch was the first to use the term "Catholic" in his letter to the Smyreans. Catholicism in Greek means "universal". Do you think Christ wanted a universal Church in which to worship and receive the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Christ (See John 6: 1-66)? Perhaps some additional reading on the early Church might be of some assistance with your concerns. Jimmy Akins has a book called "The Fathers Know Best." Trent Horn has a book called, "The Case for Catholicism." And of course, you cannot go wrong by reading the early Church fathers. Lastly, the below comments may also be beneficial also authored by me. Yours in Christ.
I heard this song once a long time ago in my church. On the day i had to buried my daddy i sung it to myself all day. It brought me strengh and hope. God is so great
first heard this song in the late 80's I think -- I was raised in the catholic church but my path following Jesus led me to other churches. There is a simplicity and focus on Jesus that reminds me of the scripture, "If I be lifted up, I will draw all men unto me!"" John Michael Talbot is a brother!! Beautiful Song . . .
‘Only In God’ ❤️ Not only is this melody beautiful but it’s the lyrics, every single word reaching back into the gift of our psalms it surges deep into the soul. I’ve been singing this stunningly beautiful spiritual deep hymn a lifetime & through life’s tough journey it’s when the path is toughest I’ve felt God’s gift of song at its purest singing this gem among a few other sacred diamonds. ‘ My stronghold My Savour I shall Not be afraid at all ‘ Only In God Yes For He Is My Rock 🌹
I've been trying to learn this on guitar from the sheet music and finally realized he tunes down one step. What a great guitarist, singer, writer. The world needs more troubadours to sing God's praise like JMT.
Only in God is my soul at rest, in him comes my salvation. He only is my rock, my strength and my salvation. My stronghold, my Savior, I shall not be afraid at all. My stronghold, my Savior. I shall not be moved.
I would have never heard this mans music if not for my mother. She played it all the time when she knew I did not like christian artists.I listened to it because we worked together for some years. She recently passed and I’am so thankful for her love of God and her introducing me to many anointed musicians.I miss you Mom but I know your with Jesus.
"My peace I leave with you my peace I give to you", Jesus. God be with you John. You will be able to rebuild and no fire can stop God's will for your ministry.
I created a music list of John's songs & sermons. He's just the most inspiring & devotional man I've ever heard. Thank you for posting this & thank you Lord for his creation. GBY all.
You don't have to be Catholic to be moved by John's religious songs. We are all Christians & are united in one by following Jesus' teachings. I love his site, & we are actually praying twice when praying in song. GBY
I was 22 yrs old in 1985 when John came to our church, he was a very quiet gentle soul and an amazing artist for the Lord. My mother and I shared his music on Vinyl records, cassttes and CD's. I being a soprano from a very young age, would sit and sing his music. I to this day still sing with a heart of thanksgiving for the Lord touching my tender life at age 17.
Saw JMT and brother Terry in concert in Victoria, MN on October 20, 2006, a birthday present to my wife who turned 51 that day! What a blessing!! This humble man and his music is appealing to all ages and faiths! Thank you for posting!
Thanks JMT for all you do, God has used you in my life and I am proud to call you brother! When I see all the debates about denominations it makes me really sad. Jesus said by this shall all men know you are my disciples...that you LOVE one another. Jesus also said "I am the way, the truth and the life no one comes to the father but by me" thats by Jesus and Jesus alone not our doctrinal position. Father please answer the prayers of your Son Jesus and make us one.
A Calm Resolve to Wait for the Salvation of God. Psalm 62. a true Psalm of God. I'd encourage anyone to read this Psalm and listen to this song and meditate on Jesus Christ and find peace and joy!
Adina and Heath, This song was played at my mother's funeral mass. Whenever I'm very stressed out, I love listening to mellow Christian Songs. Our prayers and thoughts are with you and your father / father-in-law. God Bless, Uel
I recently returned to Christianity after 11 years of skepticism. I was drawn to Catholicism because of how active the church is in helping the poor (Catholic Charities, Distributism, Catholic Worker Movement, etc.) However, I wasn’t sure if it was where I belonged. So one Saturday night, I prayed to God, “If this is where you want me, let us sing a JMT song at Mass tomorrow.” I arrived at Mass the next morning to find that the Entrance Hymn was “Only in God”. I started singing along, but when it got to the refrain, I just lost it.
talbots music trancends denominations.never been Catholic but have listened to talbot for close to 30 years.I also cried when the Pope died. saw him in Rome at the vatican in 1987 and was more excited about it than most Catholics in my tour group.I'm always happy to fellowship when the witness of Christ is there, Catholic, Protestant or Orthodox.
Only in God is my soul at rest In Him comes my salvation He only is my Rock My strength and my salvation My stronghold my Savior I shall not be afraid at all My stronghold my Savior I shall not be moved Only in God is found safety When the enemy pursues me Only in God is found glory When I am found meek and found lowly My stronghold my Savior I shall not be afraid at all My stronghold my Savior I shall not be moved Only in God is my soul at rest In Him comes my salvation
yes - it does'nt matter what christian denomination we are - just that we radiate the anointing of Jesus in our lives, not cold religion, thats not of God and people rebel against - its the anointing that cuts to the heart
Steve, i respectfully disagree. There are some (I say some because there are over 40000 different Protestant denominations) Protestant religions that support abortion, remarrying, same sex marriages, which would appear to go against Biblical teachings. So in the end Steve, the organization you belong to and their beliefs do matter, and could impact your salvation. Yours in Christ!
This song also works as an up-tempo, stompin'-n-clappin' good song for the little ones in religious education class (Sunday School, vacation Bible school, etc.). And the chords are easy on piano or guitar. Love it!
I am not Catholic, but JMT is my favorite worship artist. He is heavilty anointed with the Spirit. When I met him in person after a concert, I was very impressed by his humble attitude and cheerful spirit. It was a tremendous honor to shake his hand. A true man of God.
You should think about becoming Catholic -its amazing! God bless.

It's so touching my soul that I'm just simply crying while listening to it. So beautiful in that version... God, thank you.
Only in God is my soul at rest,
in him comes my salvation.
He only is my rock,
my strength and my salvation.
My stronghold, my Savior,
I shall not be afraid at all.
Hasn't this man ,got a beautiful voice ,Bless him !
Another favorite, so beautiful, yes so true, my soul is at rest, he is my Rock, my strength, and my salvation. Awesome. Praise the Lord !
"My peace I leave with you my peace I give to you", Jesus. God be with you John. You will be able to rebuild and no fire can stop God's will for your ministry.
Thank you God for John Michael and beautiful Hymns. Please stay close to us. Gratefully.
I created a music list of John's songs & sermons. He's just the most inspiring & devotional man I've ever heard. Thank you for posting this & thank you Lord for his creation. GBY all.
Beautiful, Thanks be to God.
Believe this is my favorite of JMT. God bless him & his ministry.
Beautiful ! Praise the Lord !
Wonderful! Maravilhoso hino. Brazil love JMT
I feel the same way. Not Catholic but JMT really does it for me. Thank you for the video.
You don't have to be Catholic to be moved by John's religious songs. We are all Christians & are united in one by following Jesus' teachings. I love his site, & we are actually praying twice when praying in song. GBY
I became Catholic because of the spirit filled love and worship I feel. The church is very calm loving and respecting of the Lord Jesus.
His music soothes my soul like when David played for Saul.
Yes! Only In God....thank you JMT many blessings to you.
Thank you for the beautiful song of God it's very soothing.
But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us. Ephesians 2:4
Beautiful voice....beautiful words!
Saw JMT and brother Terry in concert in Victoria, MN on October 20, 2006, a birthday present to my wife who turned 51 that day! What a blessing!! This humble man and his music is appealing to all ages and faiths! Thank you for posting!
I needed to hear this today. Still one of my 2 favorite JMG songs. The other "Healer of my Soul".
this ministry changed my life
Thanks JMT for all you do, God has used you in my life and I am proud to call you brother!
Such powerful moving music. Truly fitting at this time of worry across the world, God protect us from this virus that is sweeping the earth. X
Very calming. This has brought me peace.
And may we all, of every nation ,hold onto this at this time.May He be with our brothers and sisters evrrywhete amen
A Calm Resolve to Wait for the Salvation of God. Psalm 62. a true Psalm of God. I'd encourage anyone to read this Psalm and listen to this song and meditate on Jesus Christ and find peace and joy!
Yes, "only in God is my soul at rest."
A beautiful song and sung very well.
Adina and Heath,
This song was played at my mother's funeral mass. Whenever I'm very stressed out, I love listening to mellow Christian Songs.
Our prayers and thoughts are with you and your father / father-in-law.
God Bless,
Uel
I recently returned to Christianity after 11 years of skepticism. I was drawn to Catholicism because of how active the church is in helping the poor (Catholic Charities, Distributism, Catholic Worker Movement, etc.)
However, I wasn’t sure if it was where I belonged. So one Saturday night, I prayed to God, “If this is where you want me, let us sing a JMT song at Mass tomorrow.” I arrived at Mass the next morning to find that the Entrance Hymn was “Only in God”. I started singing along, but when it got to the refrain, I just lost it.
Wow
Thank you John for sharing your devotion of God what an amazing inspiration to us all Bless you
Amazing timeless message Thank You!
Yes... Its beautiful... Truly special! Thank you, Michael!
talbots music trancends denominations.never been Catholic but have listened to talbot for close to 30 years.I also cried when the Pope died. saw him in Rome at the vatican in 1987 and was more excited about it than most Catholics in my tour group.I'm always happy to fellowship when the witness of Christ is there, Catholic, Protestant or Orthodox.
So, so beautiful; John Michael Talbot has not lost his touch.
In the name of the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit, the Lord be with you, and with your spirit. Amen.
Jesus 💕🌹
Oh, if St. Francis could sing, I imagine him sounding like this (and maybe looking like him too here)!
Peaceful and serene. I love the song and the pictures are so moving. Above all, the message is clear and true. Thank you John and "Well done".
I have been looking for this song like crazy!!! Thank you so much for posting it!!! Thank you, thank you!
MAY GOD BLESS YOU BROTHER IN THE SWEETEST WAY FOR YOU KNOW THE TRUTH AND SPEAK IT IN LOVE !!!
Only in God is my soul at rest
In Him comes my salvation
He only is my Rock
My strength and my salvation
My stronghold my Savior
I shall not be afraid at all
My stronghold my Savior
I shall not be moved
Only in God is found safety
When the enemy pursues me
Only in God is found glory
When I am found meek and found lowly
My stronghold my Savior
I shall not be afraid at all
My stronghold my Savior
I shall not be moved
Only in God is my soul at rest
In Him comes my salvation
Profound, absolutely profound.
God bless you John; the anointing upon you is mighty...
my favorite song ever! ❤️❤️
This song brings me inner peace!
I sing this often at Sunday Mass with organ but would love to sing it with this lovely guitar playing. Lovely.Thankyou.
JMT is singing in God's presence and it's beautiful. That's enough.
this song touch me to tears too.. I like this song... AMEN !!
So,so beautiful and spiritual.
The love of God shows in this man his music inspired Delora and Roger as they sang for the Lord .
I really can't think of any other artist with quite the same sound as JMT. He is one in a million. His music is soooooo moving.
yes - it does'nt matter what christian denomination we are - just that we radiate the anointing of Jesus in our lives, not cold religion, thats not of God and people rebel against - its the anointing that cuts to the heart
I could here King David singing this as JMT performed. A man after God's own heart. Oh, that we would be so too!
This song also works as an up-tempo, stompin'-n-clappin' good song for the little ones in religious education class (Sunday School, vacation Bible school, etc.). And the chords are easy on piano or guitar. Love it!
My favorite JMT hymns
Only in My God, I find my Salvation and He's My Rock.. I am No Longer Afraid.
He has a beautiful voice and a timeless message.
Good one, John Michael. Stay the mission.
