the fact he drew this art after being partially paralyzed / brain-damaged shows just how amazing an artist he is.
This is probably the best video I've seen about Black Hammer. You actually discuss what the book is about, not just the plot. It’s very refreshing.

We need more channels of people actually talking about comics. Informational videos are a goldmine but analysis is important too
I had a friend recommend this series to me.
I fell in love one issue in and now I have no regret.
This reminds me of how Flex Mentallo talks about deconstruction and how it ruins hero’s and the effect it has on readers. I can’t help but wonder if there is so much deconstruction in comics because people don’t understand heroes now days. I also wonder if it is so common because of how negative society has became?
I mean it is a huge thing.
Many writers try to make a hero more "human" but due to how dark their view is they see all humans as wicked psychopaths, not everyone is a Superman but if you asked some comic book writers you'd think they lived between Dahmer and Bundy
@Johan : That's far more concise than anything I said in the video.
In my opinion, it's because the medium has matured and "grown up." And those that grew up with the medium while it matured are the ones writing the stories nowadays. You can somewhat see the same shift in early 70's Marvel titles. Those that grew up reading the 60's comics came into the field and took Lee & Kirby's more mature approach and pushed it as far forward as they could. In this era it's deconstruction, decompression and character beats because those are the elements this generation of writers grew up on. I don't know...that's my best guess at the moment.
@@StrangeBrainParts I feel that flex Mentallo predicted the current comic book era we are in now where there is lots of deconstruction, everything is dark, heroes are brought down to then level of average human. We supposed to have these heroes as someone to look up to and strive to be. I think Tom king and his depressed, deconstruction, dark style of writing where he constantly craps on beloved heroes and their legacies. most current writers were kids who grew up reading comics in the so called dark era where you had all these deconstruction comics beginning. You have to think that this effected them in someway.
@@kulturkriget problem with deconstruction is that you can’t do it but for so long then you end up with nothing. Think of the story, characters or universe as an physical object. Deconstruction is when you tear down the object. If you don’t build it back up you are left with nothing. So many writers ruin characters and don’t build them back up, or they do such a bad job of building them back that it has ruined them. I think Tom King’s Batman and also what he did to Wally west is a great example of this.
7:32 Seems like Lemire wanted to honor the legacy of a bygone era with his analogues, similarly to Moore with Watchmen.

I had Black Hammer on my pull list but since it changed the title to Black Hammer: Age of Doom after the first run, my comic book store stopped pulling it for me, unfortunately.
I absolutely loved this and found the artistic choices a joy to read

The Rich Tomasso issue was my favorite so far. It’s a beautiful meta narrative
Just picked up Library Editions Vol 1&2. Halfway through the first volume and am extremely pleased so far. Hints of New Frontier and Watchmen while being it’s own thing.
Another bang up job of giving us insite and perspective on a favorite series. But, what it did, is it made me realize that you've never done a deep dive on 'Astro City". Or, did I miss a link?
You are right...I've yet to get to Astro City.
I've read the first volume of this and Really enjoyed it. I know that at least volumes 1, 2 and 3 are on Comixolgy unlimited for anyone looking to read it. At least they were last year.
In a few years or whenever this series is complete will you do a follow up video..

I wonder if it would be worth it to examine just how much literary western comics are a metafiction about comic industry.
So, I read this comic awhile ago. I was kinda put off by Slam. I get that he is supposed to be the one trying to make the best of a bad situation. However, him calling the others "whiners" for being unhappy in their current situation and trying use to their dead friend to guilt trip them made me really hate him especially since he seems to be the only one happy about the current situation. So if anything, it came off to me that Slam was putting HIS happiness over everyone else's.
You know, that's a pretty fair interpretation. I did find that of all the characters Slam was the one who gave up the least, so to speak. Although, in Slam's defence, it looked like they were trapped there forever and he was trying to make the best of a less than ideal situation. But...you point stands.
I haven't read this. The art is beautiful, and your description is intelligent and informative. I am skeptical of how transparent and widespread the homages are. Prefer to read stories that are about themselves rather than about other stories.
I have to admit I had to stop after the second issue because it just got too depressing for me. but it's genuinely well written and illustrated.

I tried with this but I just couldn't get into it, its still on my pull list but I haven't read it since. But I know its critically acclaimed so I really need to crack it tbh.

The comic book industry has become obsessed with deconstruction they totally missed what Made works like The Dark Knight Returns and Watchmen so great I feel like the only way to keep deconstruction of superhero genre alive is they tell a mature "grown-up" story without trying to be dark and gritty and bleak and stop portraying there characters as narcissistic sociopathic sex-crazed maniacs or soul-less depressed gods as meaning that's realistic I think black hammer and my hero Academia are perfect examples of this we need more optimistic hopeful and inspiring takes on this genre but that doesn't mean you can't tackle some dark issues
I couldn't finish it. It wasn't bad, but I din't feel like Lemire was telling me anything; it was a 13 issues teaser for a payoff (or story) that never came to be.
Their price tag (~18€ for, 5? 6? chapters) didn't help eather.
I think today my english abilities reached a new absolute low.
I got on board from the first issue by chance and loved it, but eventually I stopped as (like hellboy that you also mentioned) there were so many peripheral titles involved it was overwhelming, the core story was great but some of the side stuff seemed needless and I guess like a cash grab on the main titles success. Would be interesting to go back and see where is gone on the year or so since I stopped reading though I guess...

This hits hard. Culture changed. We stopped accepting the idea that anyone does good for the sake of doing good. Everyone must have something to gain, whether it's direct or indirect. Anything less is seen as unrealistic.
I hate this even if it was always true.
Like all your videos, this one is quite complete. I have to say that I have thought many of the things you mention, but I did not go half as deep as you did. I also caught some references, but others escaped me. I would probably consider myself a "started reader", but I still have a way to go. By the way, I totally agree with your criticisms about the ending. I must say I didn't really like that chapter of Weird breaking the fourth wall either, it felt forced to my liking. Lemire is a writer who knows how to offer experimental narratives as he demonstrated in Gideon Falls, but I think that in that particular case he was a bit unnecessary, and even pretentious. Nothing that ruined the experience either, but you get me.

Hey, you could still use the idea. You merely have to put your spin on it. Superheroes trapped in limbo and believed dead is not exactly an unused concept. It's all about what you do and say with it, right?
@@StrangeBrainParts the way I was going to do it was it was a retirement home for a old superheroes and the story was going to follow a guy by the name of jet blazer when all superheroes are are killed at once due to a attack on a giant space station so all the older superheroes have to fight again
@Orc War Chief : I think Gail Simone also did something similar for Image about 15-20 years ago. The retirement home angle, that is. Basically, with the right characters and a believable premise there's no reason your version can't also exist.
