      The approach I took seems to be the best way to communicate what I'm thinking throughout the process. Glad you liked it!

    This is awesome. I am just getting into painting and I love how free you make it look. The car was amazing. It looked so detailed and perfect, and then you zoomed in, and it didn’t look complex at all. It’s crazy what your brain does to fill In the gaps, but also shows how unique this style of painting is. I love it

    Like the process of showing the photos too. I’ve been doing this and studying the still shots along with the reference and it helps especially toward the end. I’m going to say something not entirely positive for the first time. I think the car takes away a little on this one. It’s done well but the shape of the cafe light could continue down to the sidewalk and it’s interrupted by the car. Also with changing the other light to red (agree) and removing the other light what you have left is a car about to hit a pedestrian. Sounds like it’s already sold so who cares what I say. I still love it.

    I really like this painting. I love these little vignettes and the atmosphere they convey. Also we tend to always paint what we see so it’s much better and more advantageous to concentrate more on the composition before we start as you say. A good five hours well spent I’d say.

    I think it's interesting that this video is 9:11 minutes long and there are two twin tower looking shapes (almost like lit cigarettes) on the far right of the painting opposing a smaller square strucure (wtc7?). Above that, appears to be a large upside down 7 or a check ✔(check yourself before you wreck yourself?), with a downward facing 'greater than' [>] sign just above that. That it is located on the street 'Union' also implies something, I think. Maybe one day your paintings will be clues to solving some crimes that are greatly demanding resolution.

    I love night scenes and yours are always on point. Interior lighting reflexions are a perfect focal point and always transmit that feeling of warmth. Also night scenes are difficult because the colors around the lights are out of their usual range and get modified by the light so it's very confusing to find the right value. Great work.

      Thanks Martin! I know what you mean about the effect of light on the immediate surroundings. I often struggle to find the right color and value.

    This reminds me of your light painting of Alcatraz at night or was it dusk? I like this one better because the lights of the shop are even closer. The car is a good touch . It helped balance the scene. I enjoyed every minute of this one. Thanks again Michael,. From Tallahassee.

    I love that painting. It has so much going for it like a film noir movie has a look, it has that look. City scenes with signs and warm light. Just love the feel it gives me. That rebel silhouette that crosses against the traffic light. What’s going on in their mind that evening? You told me a story too. Beautiful painting.

    This is beautiful, so was the 8x8. I love how you are able to remove some items and change others to improve the composition. I was curious as to your decision to change the light from green to red. Maybe the red light is more appealing? Beautiful scene though! Love the contrasts

    • @chamberlainpaintings
      @chamberlainpaintings  Před 3 lety +1

      I once read that it's good to get some red in your painting whenever possible. Not sure if that's true for cityscapes, but definitely applies to landscapes since there's usually a lot of green. I chose to go with red just out of personal taste.

    I never usually comment... but can you try working from lightest to darkest. Add your lightest colours first and then add in the darker..Shadows etc. You will then not need to heavily layer lighter colours.

    • @chamberlainpaintings
      @chamberlainpaintings  Před 3 lety +3

      I will sometimes put in the lights first and then key the painting to those lights. The tradition in oil painting is to work from dark to light, keeping your darks thin and loading your lights. That usually works for me!

    This is perfect. The description, the steps, the application of mediums - cleared up a lot of my questions. I’ve seen you measure out in much more detail the sketch in previous videos (like with a ruler). Do you only do that in more complicated subject matter? Or have you stopped doing that altogether? As always thanks so much for your working putting this content out, always inspiring, and always very helpful.

    • @chamberlainpaintings
      @chamberlainpaintings  Před 3 lety

      Thanks Luis. I've stopped measuring because it's too exhausting and I think it makes me too careful when I begin applying color. I find that I can draw quickly and accurately by working from large shapes to small, as I describe in the video. It's a more enjoyable way to work!
