    Stunning! Just stunning!
    Fly tying is a pretty niche sort of pastime; nevertheless, this video alone has been viewed (April 2021) no less than 47,000 times. And you have nearly 100, 000 subscribers. That's extraordinary, from such a micro community.
    Your obvious humility makes me wonder whether you realise just how you have changed the (global) world of fly tying. Maybe one day there will exist a catalog raisoné of all McPhail patterns.
    No-one lasts for ever, but your art will.

    I am a big fan of your work mr. mc Phail.All the flies. But these pupa patterns are so fantastic. They have this special realistic look. With a few together in your hand it looks like real. But it seems only you can make these look as they do. Even if I do every step the same.That's the work of an artist. Like copying a painter:it'll never look the same.
    Luckely I catch good with my own tyings btw👍.
    These times have a lot of misery,but some things are fantadtic like youtube,where we can watch Davie mc. Phail flytying.

      Hi thatdamnmackem,
      I'm glad you liked the quilled effect, I use about 1/3 bleach to 2/3 warm water which works well..I do one feather at a time as it's easier to keep an eye on it..

    Dave, first, thank you for posting this. Great fly and I have just watched some other tying videos of yours and they were great. May I make one recommendation? Check out Fly Fishing in the Ozarks videos. Mr. Wise has a very great way of presenting tying videos. He cuts out all of the fluff and repetitive, beginner's level stuff.
    However, what would be really nice would be a full length video with a repeat of said video attached to the end. But this repeat would be like Fly Fishing in the Ozarks videos, only the major steps shown. Everything else would be sped up to 4 or 5000 percent speed. And a time stamp at the beginning of the shortened video to make reference easy.

    By the way Davie, where did you get that bodkin from?
    In one of your videos I saw that you were using a bodkin that has the same type of handle the xacto knife has. Difference is that it has a + cut to hold the bodkin needle.
    Did you make that yourself so that the bodkin or needle would fit inside there by using something like a hacksaw blade to cut the + so that the bodkin doesn't move around.

      Hi Kent,
      I have attached a link to the Xcelite craft knife holder which is the one that I use to hold my dubbing needle, I have used it since I got it back in the 80s so it's served me well...

    Davie,
    I really enjoy your video's, while your patterns are great, i use them more for the technique's you use as they are very varied. This one in particular is the split JC eye. How do you split the JC? Or is that something that happens often with JC naturally?
    Many thanks.

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  Před 9 lety +1

      HiMicah weeks,
      You'll find that when you look at many Jungle Cock capes they have a few natural split feathers and the more they are split the cheaper the cape will be so if you are happy like I would be as I do use them like in this pattern I'll buy it. But if I do have to split a feather then I will use my scissor to cut down to the black area of the eye then I'll pull it lightly to encourage the feather to split further down if I need it..I'm glad you enjoy the videos I do enjoy making them when I get a chance...

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  Před 10 lety +1

      Hi Mike,
      I believe the diameter of the copper wire is 0.125mm but I'm not a hundred percent sure, a small or extra small utc or uni wire would be fine..I'm glad you liked the pattern...

      ***** Thank you, Davie.
      I measured my UTC wire... for my reference and for anyone else who might find it useful.
      UTC X-Sm is about .004"
      UTC Sm is about .0065"
      UTC Br is about .0085"
      If your wire is .125mm, that's .0049"

    Hello Davie,
    I've watched this tie a number of times and it seems you have dyed the peacock eye, then bleached the fine barbs off... do I understand correctly, that you are dying first?
    Mike

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  Před 10 lety

      Hi Mike,
      I always dye the peacock first and then bleach them as bleaching the peacock eyes can make them very brittle, if you were to dye them after bleaching them you would end up with a lot of dry and broken fibres...

    Davie, I am just curious how you deal with the "tackiness" left after UV curing? I have been using Clear Goo UV resin and I have noticed that it is still quite tacky after I hit it with the light. Is it the brand? Thanks

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  Před 10 lety

      Hi Jamie Pringle,
      No all resins are the same even the old epoxy resin left a tacky surface, so what I do it to coat it with a fine coat of varnish as this will keep the resin clear and tack free..

      Hi Andrew,
      The biggest problem is my lack of knowledge when it comes to editing footage and especially the software that I use. I film and edit everything as I've had to learn this all by myself so I only know the very basics when it comes to this and I just get by. I do hope to in the future update all or most of my videos and as well hopefully find a way to make things run much smoother...Thankyou for your feedback and kind words...

      No worries bro! My buddy and I are building a drift boat and it took me a few days just to get the first video condensed enough to be watchable. The easiest way to do it is to watch the video once through at normal speed. Then again but this time set markers where the important parts start and stop. Then go through again and use time remapping (or whatever your software calls it) to speed up the filler by 1000 to 2000 percent. Then watch it all the way through again, speed up the unimportant scenes as necessary until you get it to under 3 or 4 minutes.
      Think about it like you were an experienced fly tyer watching someone else's video.
      What do you NEED to see to tie the fly?
      What at what parts would you stop paying attention or fast forward through?
      I'd suggest trying this with a video and seeing what the end result is. Again, really loving your patterns, can't wait to see you take it to the next level.
      And like I said as well, check out Fly Fishing in the Ozarks tying videos. They will give you a good idea of what a well trimmed video looks like. Take her easy and tight lines my man!

      Oh, and if you're interested www.deaddriftproject.wordpress.com is my blog for our boat. I have a ton of content sitting on my computer that I haven't had a chance to put up. But the video there was originally 4 hours long. I got it down to under 4 minutes with some trials and errors.
