    These two units, truck tractor and trailer, were both built during WWII in 1943 and although larger tractors were generally used to pull these Heil aircraft refueling tankers, GMC CCKWs were in some cases used as tractors for these tankers. In some cases two or even three of these tank trailers were pulled single file by a solitary truck tractor with the use of converter dollies. The Heil F2A is probably best remembered as being the tanker used to refuel the famous Boing B17 bomber. As of this writing, July 2023, the truck tractor and trailer in this video are 80 years old. The trailer in this video was used to refuel B17s on Elmendorf AFB during WWII. :More of our videos www.youtube.com/@AlaskaTrucke... Thanks for watching!

    That's pretty cool, I remember similar iron laying around here when we was kids in the 70s. I believe Heil was based in Seattle back in the day, and continued making fuel tankers, dump boxes etc... and later doing custom paint. Cheers!

    How the Trailer is Bracked ? whit Airbrackes ?

    • @AlaskaTrucker
      @AlaskaTrucker  Před 3 měsíci

      That's a good question: Some of the large WWII Mack and Autocar truck tractors had an onboard air compressor and airbrakes like any modern truck which would also activate the trailer brakes. The smaller trucks such as the CCKW had no air compressor, these smaller truck tractors would use the engine vacuum to apply the trailer brakes, via an air hose and glad-hand connected to the trailer. Those specific trailers had to be set up with vacuum brakes though. Vacuum brakes on trailers this large were used clear up into the 1950s - with marginal success. Vacuum trailer brakes were never as good as air brakes. Thanks for watching!
