Wow! Yes, the performances are great, but their arrangement for such a well known big band tune - look how they changed the restatement of the melody at the end.... Genius! And the whole vibe is so relaxed.... This may have been the original "birth of cool"!😊
Yes, Harold Land is an unjustly underrated tenor man. I think the problem is that he decided to seek his fortune on the West Coast, while most of the jazz writers were in New York, so he was sort of forgotten
I have often wondered about that. From listening to jazz for 40+ years. So often the bass and drum solos are weird excursions that have little or nothing to do with the actual tune. A weak area for jazz.
You're not listening Charles, Max Roach, Shelley Manne, Joe Morello, and even Gene Krupa were excellent musicians who knew where the bridge was and even the key changes. As for Bass players. Listen to Ray Brown or George Mraz and tell me they are weak.
Sophia Loren Coffee ...That is incorrect. Brownie was replaced by Kenny Dorham. Richie Powell was replaced by Ray Bryant. Booker Little died of uremia on October 5th, 1961. He was only twenty-three years old.
Counter-Weight Medias ...Chick Webb's version was recorded and released in 1934. Benny Goodman's version was recorded and released in 1936. The latter's version was a hit. Chick Webb was the very first artist to record this perennial favorite.
I love when musicians know they're great and don't try to do too much with their solos.
Listening to Max's solo reminds one of how much intelligence and strength he brought to the drums.
postatility yep
Max is 💕
My grandpa showed me this and everything jazz in 2011, he jus passed last month so this is hitting different
All Love, Jae. He's stompin' in Heaven now, man.
What a beautiful gift he gave you!
So many great trumpet players. Two of them, Lee Morgan and Clifford died very young.
@Jorge Escamilla Add Fats Navarro and Woody Shaw to the list.
Freddie Webster
Booker Little, Sonny Berman, Bix Beiderbecke, et al.
clifford changed my musical life.
It feels sooo good to see a lot of people talking and expressing about music on these comments. And man...Clifford's sound...from another galaxy.
That Clifford Brown tone 🎶
Great saxophone solo Harold land, excellent performance. R.I.P.
happy memories of being young, transcribing this clifford solo.
Harold Land bringing the soul....all of them, really. What a great band.
Very very swinging. Played with the the right feeling. Not forced, just poetry
Max Roach is my favorite drummer. Saw him perform many times at UMass Amherst in the 1970's.
Masterpiece gem 💎 from 1954! Really swinging ! 🤓💕🎶🎺🎹🥁
This blew my mind away. The solo has such an unbelievable amount of control
Wonderful. Perfect drummer for Clifford.

Clifford Brown is my favorite jazz musician of all time.
A really fantastic version of a great song. Small Time Crooks.
Yes, Harold Land is an unjustly underrated tenor man. I think the problem is that he decided to seek his fortune on the West Coast, while most of the jazz writers were in New York, so he was sort of forgotten
Max Roach. The only drummer where you can hear the chord changes / song form underneath his solo.

Elvin Jones knew the changes of each song he played perfectly
Dude bass players know more about the harmony than anyone else on the bandstand! There job is to outline it after all lol! That and keep time.
Yes, very musical drumming
Brilliant performing by the Brilliant Quintet
I forgot about this recording! It's soooooo good. Thanks for uploading it.
Max Roach's solo start 4:00
Clifford Brown the father and greatest at his craft.
Need to learn that 5 second intro, it's some kind of constant structure thing like in Joy Spring (I think that one was dom.13ths moving around)
this group recorded some great stuff.clifford was the best i.m.o.many thanks.
Amazing music, I came here from nuno bettencourt :p
beautiful
Saxophone and Max Roach, nice
impeccable
As usual a plesure to listen to.
Who said on Friday that the inevitable personnel changes would not be complicated by a change in formation?

lol Byas a Drink at the end
Ha ha. I love that
Lorenzo de Medici ...Correct!
The tempo change when Brown comes in for his solo is a bit disquieting for a bit.
The licc is strong with this one
Jazz today has lost this cool swing ,

morningblue is sooo right about Max. M
my knowledge of the lick has ruined me
This devastated Max Roach and he stopped playing
Sophia Loren Coffee ...False.
Richie Powell piano Clifford Brown trumpet died in a car accident in the late 1950
Booker little replace him and died at 21 from liver disease
Sophia Loren Coffee ...That is incorrect. Brownie was replaced by Kenny Dorham. Richie Powell was replaced by Ray Bryant. Booker Little died of uremia on October 5th, 1961. He was only twenty-three years old.
Get your facts straight
DAMN Benny Goodman should've had these dudes with his orchestra! (Benny Goodman is made the original)
They would have been children.
Counter-Weight Medias ...Chick Webb's version was recorded and released in 1934. Benny Goodman's version was recorded and released in 1936. The latter's version was a hit. Chick Webb was the very first artist to record this perennial favorite.
