The fun fact is that Netzer and Beckenbauer were extremely pessimistic heading into the game. Netzer said something to Beckenbauer like: if we concede less than five goals we'd have played a great game". We watched this match, closed circuit broadcast, at the L.A. Sports Arena, and I was a transfixed 10 year-old. Many of these players were in that ‘66 final, as well as the 3-2 West German victory in Leon, Mexico 1970. Two favorite players of mine, Gerd Müller and Jurgen Grabowski, passed away this year. Tonight England is playing a unified Germany in Munchen. So much history between these two powerhouse footballing nations that it’s mind boggling.

Netzer was outstanding in this match but the West German coach , Helmut Schoen , didn't really like playing both him and Beckenbauer in the same line-up , and would use Wolfgang Overath ( himself a very good player , and whom he preferred anyway ) in the 1974 World Cup finals . Netzer , who had joined Real Madrid by that time , would only play for 20 mins in West Germany's only defeat of that tournament against East Germany . This was the European Nations Cup quarter final first leg clash between England and West Germany at Wembley on 29 April 1972.
The West Germans with a new looked team won 3-1 with goals from Uli Hoeness,Gunther Netzer(penalty)and Gerd Muller. What is surprising is that three of those goals came in the last five minutes.
And it was in this match that England for the last time fielded almost half of the 1966 World Cup winning team.Bobby Moore,Alan Ball,Martin Peters,Geoff Hurst and Gordon Banks were survivors left from the 1966 World Cup winning team. But what was most surprising that England's supremo Sir Alf Ramsey left out Alan Mullery who had played scored one of the goals in England's 3-2 defeat to the same opponents the last time both teams met in the World Cup quarterfinal clash at Leon in Mexico two years ago.
Mullery was so bitterly disappointed at being omitted that he announced his retirement from international.
And in that 3-1 defeat to the Germans,Geoff Hurst and Francis Lee had played their last game for England.
Sir Alf,as usual and typical of himself had continued to rely on his old guard, five from the '66 winning team and several from the last World Cup.Only Emlyn Hughes,Paul Madeley and Martin Chivers did not play in Mexico 1970.
And the same team remained virtually unchanged from the one that beat Scotland 3-1 in the 1971 Home Championship and those Nations Cup victories over Greece and Malta.
Yes Sir Alf was still sticking to his old methods whereas Helmut Shoen wisely opted for new blood such as Uli Hoeness,Paul Breitner,George Shwarzenbeck.Bonhof and Holzenbein.
It was the clash between the new and the old.And in the end the former won and went on to clinch the Nations Cup in Brussels Belgium.

37:06 Guy gets practically elbowed in the face.. it was poorly timed and was a definite foul.. no foul given.. everybody plays on without any fuss. Ref hasn't given it.. play on. This is what I miss.. I'm old enough to remember when diving, cheating and getting people sent off was considered unmanly and unsporting.. today the player would act like he'd been hit by a truck in the face, roll around for ages and Jurgen Klopp would be all teeth and jumping up and down on the sidelines trying to pressure the referee. The ref would be forced into a decision, the player would be sent off and all the pundits would tut over it for 15 minutes after the match and we'd all have a big debate about it.. I for one am sick of that shit.

      @vja1970 Před 3 lety

The game has to allow for more contact for the diving and cheating to stop. When the ref stops for every fall the game will never flow and players will exergerrate every foul, looking for a freekick. As long as its virtually a non contact sport, the diving and rolling will never stop. I miss the 90's football where it was a perfect balance between technical skills on the ball and physicality. Now its a contactless sport and theres more physicality in Chess.

It's already half a century ago when this 1972 European Championship first leg quarterfinal clash between West Germany and England took place at the Wembley stadium on 29 April 1972.
It was just a few days before I turned 12 when West Germany captained by Franz Beckenbauer beat England 3-1 at Wembley in the first leg.
West Germany prior to the first leg clash at Wembley had beaten Hungary 2-0 in a friendly at Budapest.
As such West Germany were brimming with confidence when they arrived in London.
But,unlike England, the West Germans under Helmut Shoen had overhauled the team soon after the 1970 World Cup finals in Mexico. The old guards like Wolfgang Weber,Uwe Seeler,Willie Shulz and Karl Heinz Schnellinger had retired from international football.Newcomers like Uli Hoeness,George Shwarzenbeck,Paul Breitner,Herbert Wimmer,Bernd Holzenbein and Rainer Bonhof had been drafted into the team.
Thus the first leg clash between West Germany and England had been dubbed the clash between the "Old and the New "
Sir Alf Ramsey still have faith in those who had served him so we'll in the last two World Cups of 1966 and 1970.Five 1966 World Cup winners and several from the last World Cup in Mexico. There were only minimal changes to the England team with Paul Madeley,Roy McFarland and Martin Chivers were the newcomers.Liverpool's Emlyn Hughes had his first taste of international football in 1969 just before the 1970 World Cup.
On that fateful night at Wembley on 29 April the West Germans humiliated the home team 3-1 at Wembley with Uli Hoeness,Gunther NetZero(pen.)and Gerd Mullet scoring for the visitors and Francis Lee for the home. Two of the West German goals came in the last five minutes.

This is the first time I have watched the full match since that night April 29th 1972. The Germans outclassed England in every department. England huffed and puffed but their shortcomings were so obvious. At the back Franz "The Kaiser"Beckenbauer was imperious, playing the game at his own pace. The man of the match was Gunther Netzer who controlled the midfield and netted the late penalty. There were superb contributions also from Uli Hoeness (scorer of the first goal), Herbert Wimmer and Sigi Held. In fact the whole West German team played well. The final word was left with the ace finisher Gerd Muller. One clear chance in the 89th minute, the legendary swivel and Banks was beaten. This really was the beginning of the end for England as a real world power in football. Moore , Ball, Peters and Hurst were past their best and the gulf in class showed. The England press and fans tried to convince themselves that they were on a par with the Germans, but they were deluded. The second leg was 0-0 in Berlin two weeks later and the Germans went on to deservedly win the tournament.

No less than five of the 1966 World Cup winners took to field against West Germany at Wembley in the first leg quarter finals of the 1972 Nations Cup.
Skipper Bobby Moore, midfielders Alan Ball and Martin Peters, goalkeeper Gordon Banks and striker Geoff Hurst were the five survivors from the 1966 England's tiumphant World Cup team and they were the key men Sir Alf had pinned his hopes on getting a comfortable two goals lead.
But that West German team under Helmut Shoen had undergone vast changes since being eliminated 4-3 in extra time by Italy in the semifinals of the 1970 World Cup two years ago in Mexico.
And this West German team came to Wembley without illustrious names like Wolfgang Overath,Bertie Vogts,Fichtel,Johannes Lohr and even Wolfgang Weber. In fact the German team that faced England comprised young players from Bayern Munich and Borussia Monchenglabach.
Uli Hoeness,Paul Breitner and George Shwarzenbeck we're all from Bayern.
In contrast England were still relying on the old guard.Apart from the 1966 World Cup winners Norman Hunter and Alan Mullery were from the pre 1966 World Cup era.Hunter gained his first England cap in 1965 whereas Mullery a year earlier. And Francis Lee and Colin Bell played in the last World Cup in Mexico.

Scored 8 goals during the tournement - Germany scored 9 in their first two games. 2010 Germany had torn England apart even if the Lampard goal had been given. England had 5 good minutes in that game and were utterly outplayed for the entire rest.

2010 England being 1-2 down at half-time they still had enough time to equalize. Instead they were totally outplayed again in that second half just like they were in the first 30 minutes. Germany were clearly the bettet side than England and proved it the following years. The youngest squad of the competition in 2014 and won it. England can dream of such an achievement.

It was football of the finest quality in that Euro Championship quarterfinal first leg clash between West Germany and England at Wembley on 29 April 1972.
England aa the 1966 World Cup champions had won all its Nation Cup ties bar one.The 1-1 draw with Switzerland at Wembley.
Throughout 1971 and until that first leg clash at Wembley in 1972,England were unbeaten with victories over Malta,Greece and Switzerland.Scotland were also beaten 3-1 at Wembley in the Home Championship.
But England under Sir Alf Ramsey hardly had a friendly international match for five months prior to the 29 April date with the West Germans at Wembley. This proved to be costly as the England team only assembled barely a week before the Wembley clash with the Germans.Even Roy McFarland had to excuse himself from the England team but Sir Alf only found out that he was actually playing for Derby County in an important FA Cup tie.
And the England team remained unchanged from the one that had soundly beaten Scotland at Wembley barely a year ago.
Five 1966 World Cup winners Ball,Moore,Peters,Hurst and Banks took to the field with Bell,Hunter and Lee from the last World Cup in Mexico.Only Chivers,Madeley and Hughes did not play in Mexico although the last was member of the team.
Here we have a relatively aging England team facing a new looked West German team with new blood.
That evening England were outclassed by this superb West German team with Uli Hoeness,Gunther Netzer(pen.) and Gerd Muller scoring for the visitors and Francis Lee for the home team.

Wow what a game! Whoever said football has gotten any faster over the last 45 years?! I couldn't tell from watching this match and comparing it - say - to the 2014 WC final.

justus ohlhaver The velocity of this video just must have been a little bit manipulated. I happen to have the dvd, on which the game lasts its regular 90 minutes. This video here is some 4‘ shorter although nothing is skipped.

In der Strafraumbeherrschung war Sepp Maier unschlagbar, wahrscheinlich bis heute.
