  • Today’s video is special as we are giving you the chance to enjoy in its entirety (over 31 minutes) one of Japan's most famous Iwami Kagura plays : Orochi!
Literally meaning “Entertaining the gods” Kagura is a sacred Japanese dance and music ritual dedicated to the gods of Shinto and is believed to be as old as 1,300 years. What makes Iwami Kagura special is its simplistic approach to Kagura. It’s designed to entertain both the gods and the average population thanks to its fast-paced music, dance, gorgeous costumes and simple stories.
Now, the Orochi Play, or the play of the defeat of the eight headed giant serpent, by Susanoo is a well known Kagura story.
One day Susanoo stumbled upon a sad elderly couple and asks why them why they are grieving. Each year the giant serpent has eaten one of their seven daughters. This year, it is coming for their last daughter. After hearing this, Susanoo gives the serpent poisonous alcohol.
Once it is drunk, he defeats it. Susanoo is then united with the maiden he saved. The sword that emerges from the now dead serpent’s tail becomes one of the Three Sacred Treasures and is preserved in the Atsuta Shrine (Aichi Prefecture).

What a great kagura! I'm sure Susanoo no Mikoto, Kushinadahime, Ashinazuchi no Kami and Tenazuchi no Kami were very pleased by this.

What a success have you manufactured, my good friend! I watched this play with my eyes unclouded so that I could appreciate fully its success and high quality and admire (to the maximum extent) the unkindled success and beauty of your CZcams channel, which I always can be reliant on for perfection-quality contents.

They are not dragons. A huge snake. A snake with eight faces & eight tails.
The Japanese word "(大)蛇" means "(Huge-)Snake".
Since this venue is small, only four heads have appeared. They are playing one head & one body each other. However, according to the original legend "Kojiki", this monster has 8 heads and 8 tails on one body. Like Super King Ghidorah.

although the blue dragon reached out his human hands to grab his body for a few times , it was just a little flaw , at the end it was an excellence show.

    • @TokyoStreetView
      @TokyoStreetView  Před 4 lety +1

You have to remember one things is that these show are actually organized and played by local volunteers, explaining such "mishaps". People are actually not paid or very very very little for doing this. And some often rush from work to start playing. If you pay close attention to one of the Dragon you will see one of the actor still being in "Bridgestone" overalls from work.

I’m from Iwami, Shimane. Want foreign people more about this Iwami Kagura rather than other garbage cultures. They normally learn Ohayashi and Kagura since they’re child.

I love Japanese mythology and Shinto but dude, "other garbage cultures"? No culture is superior or inferior. Nonetheless, we humans should make an effort to learn about cultures other than our own.
