no one talks about this but there is very small percentage of professional golfers who actually make a living playing golf
Even players qualifying from the challenge tour to the european tour very really make it... They don't get enough starts always hoping on invites to try and make enough £ to keep their card

True. You have to have ridiculous talent to make a living from any professional sport. It is incredibly badly paid given the talents of the players. It’s easy to look at the best players in the world and the amounts they are paid but there are so few of them.
Snooker darts also. Travel manager agent visa hotel food flights. To go out in the second round. With mortgage and two kids..only 5 big tournaments a year
there are a very small percentage of professionals in any sport making money, the thing is anyone can become professional at golf
The only way to survive with pro ams is a motorhome in my opinion. I caddied for several guys in Australia on the pro am level and it's a money drain. One Guy came 8th on the Aus circuit in the money list for the year and was 30k in debt. I think if you got a motorhome you could turn it into a mobile podcast and editing studio and expand content into life on the road etc. Put all your stuff in storage you don't need and build a more diverse channel entailing camping and living the pro golf lifestyle. If you own your home rent it out and if you are renting get out and save a fortune on expenses and invest that into a fulltime lifestyle with nothing holding you back. That would allow you to travel to europe in it as well and live and play in some cheaper countries etc. All this sounds great if you are single and no dog etc. Anyway I think it's a great option, especially dealing with the cost of living. You can sponsor the motorhome all over. No flights, no expensive hotels, cook for yourself, free camping options. Life's, short, you are young, be free and enjoy the golf life. When you get older you will 100% say those years I was living on the road, travelling and playing golf full time with no bills, electricity etc to pay were the best days of my life.....In Aus there are so many people that travel and make content camping etc. They get so many sponsors and make more than enough to be profitable and they just camp. I don't know of any golf youtuber doing anything like it.

Followed you a long time, played poker myself for a living 11 years ago understand that struggle and pressure. It's not easy and no easy answer but will say this, if you ever take that motivation to something else (and fuck me that's not easy when you feel lost) then the attitude and mentality will always stand to you. Mate, youtube golf has blown up so much as you obviously know. You have the right personality and skills to just take yourself away from so much stress. Teaching ? Have fun with with it etc... still doing / making a living doing what you are passionate about and then enter the tournaments and back yourself with the platform you have built ... There are big names (pros) that are popping up on youtube so much now that I wonder if they are getting ahead of the curve. Not the same money of course - But times are changing. Fast.
Francis Ngannou worked in sand mines when he was a child, travelled to Europe to pursue his dreams, was homeless in France but kept pushing on with beleif and determination. He finally became a UFC champion. You won't push through a £7.50 price tag on a meal deal. James we all want you to do well, but if you keep changing directions, how will you ever get to where you want to be? How much do you really want it? I think you will regret it if you dont try your hardest and be determined and consistent for at least an 18-24 month period. Give it everything and take some risks and discomfort. If you make it, that's great. We will all be so happy for you. If it doesn't work out, at least you can say you gave it your all and have no regrets. Dont become one of those people who reach middle age and say i could've, would've, should've if i had given it 100%.
I get the sentiment but this is a completely false equivalence. In MMA / boxing, you are paid to compete, or even at the lowest end you don’t pay to take part. In golf you have to pay for everything from competing to travel and everything in between.
@10Tails10 The point I was making was that Ngannou wasn't making any money. He went through hardship. He travelled to Europe with nothing and was homelss. He was prepared to go through this to chase his dreams, which he finally achieved. That was Ngannou's journey. There's plenty of other famous examples out there too. Actors who went to Hollywood and lived in their cars, succrssful business people who had failed time and again and lost everything but kept going and eventually made it. There are lots of people who try and are not successful also. My point is, if you give it everything for say the next 2 years and it doesn't work out, at least you can honestly say to yourself that you tried. If not, you may live with regrets and become a person who starts every sentence off with words like i could've, i should've, i would've etc .

I just think golf is such a unique sport and very different the examples given - all that you have mentioned cost nothing to try your hand at i.e. auditions are free, boxing and MMA is free to take part in and at the equivalent level to where James is with his golf game, you would absolutely be paid (I both box and play golf). I do agree about not letting anything get in your way and sacrificing everything you can to make it, but the cost of professional golf is crippling. I had a friend who played on the European tour and in his best year he made 34k, and it would have cost him north of 90k to complete. It’s very difficult. Ngannou though deserves full respect for the hardship he has been through, a very inspiring story!

Some of the comments about Flower hindering his ability are dog 💩. They’re close mates with years of memories together, some of which we’ve been lucky enough to see through their channels. If JW doesn’t make the pga tour, I couldn’t care less, falling short is part of life, the journey & the entertainment they provide together is class!

I’ve had a crap day at work mate and play less golf as a result and my golf has declined, which is frustrating as I always seem to have less time to do what I used to enjoy in the summer, which is golf. Do what makes you happy. If it’s vlogging then go for it.

I totally agree that given the direction you want to go down then continue playing with Flower and build the CZcams channel which will give you the financial backing you need for the competitions.

Ha ha got it in one. My lad plays golf on a scholarship in the US. He is at a D1 college but has never been in the top two in any team he has played in. He is under no illusions how good some of the young golfers he plays against every week are. My son plays off plus 3, he played in one of the regional open qualifiers last month and I he ended up scoring 1 over and finishing out of the qualifying positions. None of the well known youtube golfers got close to that and my lad knows that he is just a good player who could never earn a living playing tournament golf.
The youtube guys are very entertaining though and make a good living doing what they do well. Sure it is fun to throw your hat in the ring from time to time but you better be able to consistently break par in all conditions to stand a chance.

I’d be looking at the likes of Rick Shiels, Peter Finch at what they do both good & bad and simulate it but with your own spin. I appreciate you can’t just have Justin Rose, Ricky Fowler….etc on your channel straight away but hey…. that’ll be a future goal.
Go see Dan Grieve for a short game lesson & video it. Go see Robert Rock for a swing lesson & record it. You may have to pay for the please but you gotta start somewhere and it would be great content.

I fully understand your issues but from the point of view of this one viewer I would say that what differentiates your content from a whole host of CZcamsrs is your tournament blogs and the highs and lows. I loved your analyses of other CZcamsrs golf swings too.
Your games with Flower just don’t matter at all and other content providers play with different people often on top courses backed by cameramen, video editors, drone footage etc. In essence they do this aspect so much better and this is what you are competing with for views.
Wishing you all the best in all your endeavours but I seriously doubt that you will be able to fund yourself from primarily CZcams income without a content ‘edge’.
I reckon you just need a total reboot. Crossfield, long drive, the weight lifting and get the legendary Mapp back showing us how it’s done. Don’t even need to play golf and I’d watch that.

You have to have SERIOUS financial backing to even have a chance to make it. A local kid from my area never made it, but had a couple guys paying around $60k a year for him to live on the road and enter some Adams tour events, and a lot of Monday Qualifiers. It's so competitive it's not even funny.
Rory McIlroy and many others didn't get any financial backing when turning pro. But they made it.

Frankly James, you need to think about what will make you successful. You and Flower are funny and create good content, challenge a few other content creators and make it competitive. If you can get your subscribers to say 250k what does that do to your income. I was offered the chance as a plus 4 handicap golfer to turn professional, i was good at maths and realised not a chance to earn an income. As a junior i played against a number of lads that did progress, two won majors, in a final against one of them i realised i was crap, he was so much better. Unfortunately no YT back then, as my degree is marketing and i would have made a go of YT. You are a player, one of the better of the YT creators, i could give a but, except that would be trolling and that isn’t me. Good luck, and grow the YT channel, take a look at taco in NZ, Luke Kwan introduced hime to the world, and his channel has grown exponentially, you can do the same

making a living playing golf is incredibly difficult, especially this days when 14,15 year old college kids are +5's,you decided to give it a go although it should've been clear from the get go your deficit was way too much to overcome, hard work beats talent but this kids have bucket loads of talent and work harder than anyone, in the best facilities with the best equipment, technology and some of the world's best coaches. What you did wrong, VERY WRONG, was to keep dissing other creators for none other than they were getting the views, you basically went on a streak being condescending with every big CZcams channel and their viewers, burning all the bridges that could now (or way sooner!)get you across the river of not being dependent on what's fundamentally handouts,because asking for sponsorships with your record i can't see one single sponsor not thinking to themselves they're waving that money goodbye. Look at what a big collaboration can do for a channel, Bob does sports with gg,kwon with gg,taco golf with kwon..I warned you back then that those disses would bite you in the ax and you laughed at me,But that's life, you make mistakes you pay for it. With that said, I'm still human and if you set up a gofnd me or something I'll throw a couple your way because i can see mental struggles right through you clear as day, don't be afraid to ask for help, ANY kind of help. It's like in golf you can hit a bad shot if you hit a good recovery one but compiling mistakes is no good

i think if you can make money playing golf casually through youtube and other social media content then you've already won and are in a better situation that 95% of club level professional golfers that have to work in a pro shop, if you're doing it for the love of competing then fair enough but why add pressure to everything when you don't really need to, just enjoy it thats the main thing

Still play for pleasure and flower for extra content but tournament stuff too ! Keep pushing dont stop ! Plus introduce some new equipment other brands ! Or strive for new sponsor deal 😊 maybe build the channel too 👌😊
Pro golf is expensive, so taking some time off to build up the finances seems like a good idea and come back hungry and ready to compete

Only an opinion of course. From what i have seen you can play some decent golf some of the time. You obviously are not James Ruth or Paul Hendrickson standard but i am sure they both have financial backers. But what you do have in abudence is self belief and that can be more valuable than financial help. Forget playing with Flower, you need to play better players who are going to push you to the limits, then you will be able to compete against Ruth and Hendrickson and all the other decent players who win not all the time of course but a good percentage of times. Lucrative coaching trips to Portugal and Turkey will then fall into place
