  • Peter & Kathy Holcombe (AKA-Famagogo) explore deep into the wilds of Death Valley. They visit the Racetrack Playa, a massive flat as a pancake dry lake bed known for the mysterious moving rocks that leave trails in the mud behind them. This is a very remote area down a 27-mile rocky road known for shedding tires. A true adventure for this couple living full-time in a 4x4 Winnebago Revel Sprinter Van. The perfect vehicle for an extended stay in the Death Valley backcountry at Homestake Dry Camp is just minutes south of the Racetrack Playa.
Sitting like a guardian looking down on the Racetrack Playa is Ubehebe Peak at 5,678 ft; it towers 2’306 ft above the Racetrack Playa, making for a steep 2-mile hike to its summit. But the views from the summit are amazing, looking down into the Saline Valley on one side and the whole Racetrack spread out before you on the other.

Just got to watch tonight - long weekend belated birthday celebration. Ubehebe Peak was a fascinating video. I love how the two of you play off each other and have a spirit of adventure. The hike looked pretty strenuous. I remember a hike up in Rocky Mt Nat Park - a tiny lake called Lake Hayaha no one wanted to go all the way up with me but we made it. No book to sign but memories to keep for a lifetime. Thanks for taking us along on the adventure. Here in the flatland of Northern Indiana there is nothing so dramatic but adventure is near with Michigan just a few miles away. Let me know if you get up to the Northwest - I have family up there. Also think about the UP of Michigan if you want to travel East. Keep up the great work. Excellent in every way. You'll have thousands of subscribers in no time. I have shared it on FB and Instagram.

Hey Denny, Thanks so much for sharing. We have spent a little time in the UP. It's gorgeous. And Rocky used top be our backyard park when we lived in Colorado. It's another all time favorite too.

Thanks for giving us another "Place to Go" pin for our adventure map. If you like the Racetrack, you should check out the Blackrock outside of Gerlach, NV or the Dead Cow Lakebed Airstrip east of Pyramid Lake. The Blackrock is home of the Burning Man festival in the fall as well as the place they broke the sound barrier on land, and Dead Cow host an annual fly-in for the STOL Drag World Championships in Oct. Plenty of BLM boondocking at both of these places with lots of side adventures as well.

Hi Jeff, that area is a big black hole for me. I really need to check it out. The STOL looks very interesting. I love the video of the Alaskan bush pilots taking off with no runway. Thanks for this recommendation, it’s on my list for sure.

@@Famagogo Not many do come up to Northern NV (Vegas seems to draw all the attention), but it’s and area that lives by “don’t fence me in”. If you ever plan to visit let me know and I can pass along some must see areas around Lake Tahoe as well as other spots out in the desert.

I have been at the Race Track many times on my dualsport motorcycle, (KTM690) I always wanted to camp there as I think it would be super-duper-neto-meskito!! Lippencot is right there as well, but do not go down that trail in a van! This trail drops you into the Salene Valley and onto the hot springs. Thank you for taking me along!

Death Valley was one of the more surprising places I've been. Definitely planning a return trip. Think my NP peak favorites are Guadalupe Peak and Lassen peak. Have plenty more on the hit list to check out though.

My dude, I remember seeing your rig out there at Stovepipe Wells. I meant to come compliment you on the van, but mostly I was dying to know how you got the sick custom orange Gnarvana, and what else do you have? An Antix and Rockstar? The Jackson trifecta!? All in my favorite color! I’m super jealous man!
