  • Join me for the final part of my epic journey as I explore the county town and cathedral city of Hereford. Hugged by the River Wye and just 16 miles from the border with Wales, Hereford is home to many attractions including the Museum of Cider, the Black and White House Museum and, most famously, the the cathedral! Unfortunately, as our itinerary only allowed 2 hours to explore the city, we had to focus our visit on the cathedral, Chained Library and Mappa Mundi.
After exploring the city, we make our way back home on one of West Midlands Railway's new Class 196s! If you haven't already, be sure to check out the previous two parts of the journey where I make my way to Hereford via Sheffield and Manchester!
Ticket price (2 adults with railcards):
    • Hereford to Stamford (via Birmingham New Street) - £44.70
    • Admission to Mappa Mundi and Chained Library - £12
Thank you to everyone who supports the channel by liking, subscribing or simply watching this video, I really appreciate it!

That was an excellent series! Looking forward to your next expedition. Back in the 90s, when I lived in a station house in North Wales, a couple of us decided to discover where are ‘local’, Shrewsbury train went after that. Central Trains did an occasional ‘£10 Anywhere on the network’ ticket. Turned out our train became the Shrewsbury to New Street service before changing character again and going forward to Grimsby. The return journey required changes at Lincoln, New Street and Shrewsbury where we finally arrived over two hours late and the signal boxes on the last sector had closed. (This was before centralised radio signalling on the mid-Wales lines.) Two taxis (the service divided at Mach) took us the final leg after which I decided that if I ever travelled on a train again it would be too soon. Fortunately, my view changed when I went to work in Spain for several years. The problem with UK trains seems to be that they’re too expensive for what they offer and are basically unreliable, which is a shame. I must add that I admire your stamina, still being conscious after that voyage.

Really enjoyed the series Rory, and particularly because I happen to live in Hereford! I've subscribed too, and it looks like I am your 500th, looking forward to more.

Great stuff, Rory. The formal script is well crafted and the shots long enough to capture a sense of the cathedral's beauty while the straight-to-camera pieces are personal and fluent. Pity about the weather, but it doesn't spoil a superior YT presentation. Look forward to what comes next.

Rory, totally outstanding. My dad mentioned on Uncle Dave's post that you should maybe consider media as a profession, couldn't agree more xx
    Love Kirsty, Glenn and Kerr

It looks as if this is a new project for you, and that, so far at least, you are really enjoying yourself making these travel documentaries. As I originally hail from Peterborough I know Stamford very well and have used the Peterborough to Leicester/Birmingham line may times over the years. I've also had a spell living near Hereford so I also know that city quite well. I will follow your travel exploits as you post new clips and hope that your enjoyment continues. I just hope that it doesn't prove too expensive for you to keep this project going. Sadly train travel is far from cheap in the UK, and even though I benefit from a Disabled Persons Railcard tickets can still be quite expensive - especially if you wish to make use of 1st class, which is always preferable particularly if there is a Dining Car option available on a particular service.
Anyway, keep up the good work and I look forward to your next journey.
